I’m looking at renting a cottage in the Lake District later this year but don’t know where to start. Does anyone know the best areas to stay for walks and views?

spent a week there last year around Threlkeld a few miles out of Keswick. Stayed in a little cottage in the grounds of the Blencathra field study centre (which was closed last year so lovely and quiet)

https://www.heartofthelakes.co.uk/cottage/Lake-District-Ayrshire-and-Dumfries-Galloway-Blencathra-Centre/Derwent-Cottage-1042931.html

Only small one bedroom but cosy with stunning views. There are several other larger cottages available also. We put a bird feeder in the tree and had red squirrels, blue, great and cole tits, woodpeckers, nuthatches and finches etc no more than a few feet from the windows. Great walks up Blencathra and all around the area (Cat bells is another good one) if that's your thing. There is a mix of hills, forests and moorlands to explore (and of course the lakes). Grasmere is another good base to explore the area from. Again, lots of walks for all abilities. Spent the second week of our hols last year at Kinlochewe in Scotland where we saw eagles and even had a Pine Marten coming to the garden to munch on the peanut butter and jam sandwiches that we put out for it.

We love walking and wildlife etc so it was a perfect holiday for us. You can keep your swimming pools and sun loungers as far as i am concerned. just hope all those "staycationers" bog off back to ibiza and benidorm next year and leave the lovely UK countryside to those of us who enjoy it.

Bhutan.

When I was there in circa 1980 it was still almost completely isolated from the rest of the world and had almost zero modern infrastrutcure - no television network, few roads, no electricity. Getting a visa was practically impossible back then but the border guards were open to a bribe (400 American cigarettes iirc). I have never been anywhere where life was so very different from our own, it was truly medeival.

I love Italy. Too many places to name a favourite but Matera is up there. Stunning place and literally takes your breath away.

Bit like Norway, one of those places I want to go to and take a bit more time there. When I do trips I try and cram too much in as I don't want to miss out, but it can feel rushed. Be nice to sit and chill and just take the world in a bit.

Anyone done the Rocky Exlplorer, one for the list when I'm old(er). Would love to travel Canada.

Yeah that’s what I thought when I first discovered it. Not many people seem to be aware but it looks beautiful. Hopefully will go there next year.

Tromso and the Lofoten Isles, northern Norway. Got engaged under the aurora.

It was just the best trip ever. Few days in Tromso, I had met a Norwegian doctor during a training course so hit him up and he showed us around and even had us over for dinner one night (he served reindeer). We then drove to the Lofoten Isles and stayed in a converted fishing hut out over the water.

Yeah I know what you mean. Sometimes you feel guilty just chilling on holiday so you go overboard and come back knackered haha.

I went on an all expenses trip with my work.  Loved it. Did paragliding over the bay, mountain biking.

Isle of Harris beaches are incredible. Really want to go back there but it’s obviously a mission.

Harris is amazing. Few places in the World stayed with me like that island did.

Agree, I’m on YouTube most nights just watching random videos about it.

Tooo many places to choose one...

The Pantanal is an awesome place (if you like really hard trekking, solitude and tropical jungle/wildlife).

Vancouver Island is a place I could happily move to.

The Maldives if you like tranquility and the sea (and nothing else...)

For me it depends who with. Barcelona and Rome with my missus were good trips. Then we went to Umbria and Rome with our best friends and it was on another level.

Undoubtedly there are spectacular places to go to. Personally I'm very interested in history. Years ago we went to Olympia, the site of the original Olympic games. It was mostly a ruin but just being there was awesome. The Vatican is also pretty incredible as is The Colosseum when you think of the Roman influence on the world. (Don't go all Monty Python on me)!

I bet it'll be nice when it's finished though.

Probably Hong Kong or New York for cities... China was pretty eye opening all places have there little beauty's I think went to the Great Wall that was pretty nuts

Just moved to China for work. Not seen much because I have been in quarantine since (except for a drive round Beijing to the hotel). Have been pleasantly surprised so far how lovely everything is. The Great Wall is definitely my first port of call when a get a few days off work!

As for the question if we are talking cities I think Berlin takes some beating personally.

Loved the Great Wall! We went to the place where you get a ski lift up and then a kind of sledge thing/rollercoaster down. It was amazing - would definitely recommend! I believe there’s a closer part of the wall you can get to by public transport but it’s meant to be really crowded. Where we were it was pretty empty, so we got some great pictures.

Yeah, I've got all the time in the world to visit so I'm going to try and stay off the tourist trail if I can. I'll definitely look into that ski lift! That sounds really cool!

Just don't do what I did and fall over as I got off the ski lift - slightly embarrassing!

Annecy is lovely, I've stopped there a couple of times whilst driving from Geneva to Bourg. It's pretty small, perfect for a weekend trip but you'd see pretty much the whole town in a day. Nice place to use as a base if you wanted to explore the surrounding area. If you go, well worth hiring a boat to go out on the lake for an afternoon - we took a boat out for about 3 hours, relaxed and went swimming.
