Remember him give Riccardo the run around when we lost 2-1 away in 19/20 season. To be far he plays in a Burnley side that is ultra defensive and only scored 33 goals last season. If I was a cross specialist, I’d expect to have field day playing for Burnley with their aerial presence.

Just because someone isn't exactly what we need right now doesn't make them a bad player. McNeil is a good, young talent who will go on to have a very good Premier League career. He gets linked most windows with us so looks to be someone we seemed to have watched for a while, but like I say, we don't need him right now. However, I would more than welcome him in the future if/when he may be available at a lower price. I wouldn't read too much into this one for the immediate future. Exactly. He's not my first option but he's definitely better than someone like dan James. People ought to know he plays in a system that limits him offensively. He's a very good player anr at the right price id take him here. Problem is no way they'd sell for cheap. Move on but let's not be delusional

Completely agree we have a more pressing need for Barnes cover than anything else and he's a quality player. Rodgers would make him an England international. He won't be joining anyway but I'm baffled by some of the criticism.

AKCJ Posted 23 August 2021 Share Posted 23 August 2021 I think to be fair we do need more than one winger in. Currently our realistic options are Barnes and Albrighton. In an ideal world we get rid of Perez, buy a top class right winger and someone like McNeill to play a bit-part role.

I'm aware I've posted a lot of it. Largely it's a coping mechanism, using a certain amount of humour to cover a slightly knee jerk sense of disappointment I had last night at this rumour coming back again because, frankly, it's one I can imagine to be somewhat true. So for the record, I should state: I obviously don't think he's that bad, I just don't think he really improves our best 11. Or, if he does, only marginally. For me, this is a bit like all the persistent Troy Deeney rumours from a few years ago. Clearly, Deeney wasn't awful and he'd probably have been able to contribute something here more than Slimani would have (low bar tbf) by simply having a better work ethic and team spirit. But he'd not really have improved us a great deal and Watford wanted insane money for him. This is the issue now. There's not really any likely scenario where signing McNeil will represent value for money, Burnley aren't going to give up their best asset for the kind of money we just picked up Vestergaard and that's the only sort of scenario in which he'd be a good deal. I think too often people look at footballers in isolation without really considering where they fit in your team. This isn't necessarily all that shocking given that even some extremely highly paid professionals do it, I mean look at Arsenal's recruitment over the last decade. I'm always hearing Leicester fans on here bang on about McNeil and his crossing ability or his touch or his work rate or whatever else they think is a positive, it always sounds similar to the same sort of praise that gets gushed on Albrighton when he gets his biannual assist off the bench. There's this sort of 2+2=6 logic where by someone looks at our squad, lacking players who can cross, they look at McNeil who can cross, and they go "if we had some players who could cross - we'd be great!" completely ignoring the fact we don't play a game that's heavily dependant on crossing. There's a few different directions we could go in recruiting a RW. We could go for a direct upgrade on the way Perez plays (or is meant to), a wider positioned attacking midfielder, playing as almost a playmaker who'll sit a little bit narrow and allow Ricardo/Castagne/Justin to overlap and provide the width. This player would have a good range of passing, good vision, good tactical sense, an ability to play through balls and good movement. You're thinking Hakim Ziyech, Thomas Lemar, Thomas Muller, Bernardo Silva style players. Or we could opt for a more obvious wide forward. A bit more of a mirror of Barnes, someone fast, someone who'll stretch an opposition defence and provide both width to challenge a full back and a threat cutting in to shoot, Madueke and Berardi as persistent rumours all window suggest we're probably aiming more for this than the former. McNeil doesn't represent either type of player. He's got the skill set of a much more conventional, old fashioned English wide midfielder. He works hard, covers his full back, puts in a good cross and all of these things are great if you're Burnley but they're underwhelming if you're Leicester and if you want any proof of that you just need to look at how little Albrighton has even played under Rodgers, let alone how much he's created or scored. If we pay decent money for McNeil it'll be yet another window where we whack on a significant amount of cash to "replace Mahrez" and we'll STILL need to spend again there next year because he just won't be the calibre of player we should be starting there. 7

Leicesterpool Posted 23 August 2021 Share Posted 23 August 2021 £20 million is cheap these days, he's only 21 so plenty of time to develop so far he's been good. In fact we could offer £17million and Hamza, he'd be suited there I think.
Stadt Posted 23 August 2021 Share Posted 23 August 2021 He’s a 21 year old, left footed Albrighton. Which over 5 years plus any extensions would probably be good business. He’s not what we need right now though.

Chocolate Teapot Posted 24 August 2021 Share Posted 24 August 2021 (edited) Just figured. He wouldn't have to be in the 25 man squad so that's a bonus. And his agent was there last night 👀 Edited 24 August 2021 by Chocolate Teapot
cityfanlee23 Posted 24 August 2021 Share Posted 24 August 2021 He would be more along the 30m mark imo. At that price I'd rather go in for Ismaila Sarr who is valued at 35-40m. Although I do rate McNeil a lot, looks a really good young prospect. If he is £20m then snap him up.
