Spartak Moscow Pre-Match Press Conference - Brendan Rodgers

Rodgers on team selection

"We will pick a team to win the game. We want to have stability in the team after a really good result. We have all of our fit players here because it’s a very important game for us.”

Rodgers on Spartak

“When you go to Napoli and win, they showed they have a lot of quality. I know Victor Moses very well and if he’s out here playing that’s because he is playing for a very good team. We anticipate a difficult game.”

More from Rodgers on Spartak

“I’m very impressed with Spartak play, how they want to play. They have dynamic players up front and creative players in midfield. Victor is within that, but he’s one of a number of good players.”

Rodgers on Europa League importance

“It’s very important. We want to go as far as we can. Our first game against Napoli we should win, but we took a point. Then we lost. That makes this a very important game if we want to progress in the competition.”

Rodgers on consistency

“It’s important for us to be consistent in the performance level. We have been inconsistent so far, but on Saturday, we played well over 90 minutes, and that will be important for us to replicate that."

Rodgers on approach

“In any game of football, it’s balance. We set out to attack the game and be aggressive in our build-up play. But there are going to be moments where we’re under pressure and we have to be calm under that pressure."

Will Vardy and Maddison play?

“This game is very important, but you will see tomorrow.”

Rodgers on Tielemans?

“Clearly he’s integral to our game. He’s a joy to work with. He’s super professional. To see a young player with that focus and mentality is great. He came off a couple of difficult games with Belgium. He’s one of Europe’s top midfield players. There will be talks with the club in terms of his contract, but continuing to work with him is my focus."

Rodgers on importance of aggression

“It always has been. That’s our blueprint, that’s how we play. Those fundamentals of how we defend have always been key, as they helps us attack well. That mentality was back into our game. It’s still very early in the season. The international break came at a great time for us and we were able to reinforce what we’re about.”

Fresh injury concerns?

“Ayoze Perez was the only one who hasn’t travelled. He didn’t feel well last night and we saw how he was this morning, and he wasn’t feeling much better. Hopefully he’ll be alright for the weekend.”

Rodgers on Victor Moses

“I had Victor on loan and he was a really good player for me. He probably didn’t play as much as he would have liked, but when he did play, he made an impact. With Chelsea as well, he’s played at two great clubs. I know the threat he has, so we’ll have to keep an eye on him.”

Rodgers on Evans

"We'll do a session this evening with Jonny and we're hoping he will fine and will come through that. He's had no reaction to the weekend, it was just cramp. He's had a couple of days recovery, and we'll see after this evening's session."

Really promising that about Evans, still not sure I'd risk him but the fact he's not a but sore from playing 85 mins after the issues he's had with his foot is very good. Keep him fit and we will finish top 7 and all being well have a run at this comp.

Something strangely funny about Rudkin in a full club trackie.

Indeed. It's something I've noticed about  cricket or tennis coaches in the past. Late middle aged, middle class white men in tracksuits. Incongruous and slightly bizarre

DON'T MAKE EVANS TRAIN TONIGHT YOU MUGS!

Looks like he’s there and training on the clubs Instagram story. Hope he’s not risked tomorrow, can’t risk losing him again. Him, Vards and one of Castagne or Ricardo are the only ones I’d consider resting.

Think he’s virtually already at that Ledley King stage of doing very little physical training and saving himself for games.

Serious point - is Evans getting toward Les Ferdinand / Ledley King territory of 'don't bother doing the physical parts of training - see you on match day' ?

Yes

Gutted about Perez. If we play to his strengths and build on from the Man U game, we’ll forget about Praet very quickly.

Ricardo on whether City have hit ceiling

“I think in football, we have to always want more, we have to do our best everyday to achieve more and more and we can’t be satisfied with what we did in the past.

....this coming from a FT poster would be deemed entitled....!!!

Players think the same way as the average man in the street. There is aspiration and a realisation than once you have scaled that mountain, you start to look for a bigger one.

Trouble is we scaled Everest in 2015/16.

God knows what we do here. I don’t want Evans to play because I’m selfish and I want him to be fit on Sunday as I’m going to the game. But we need to win if we’re going to win this group. We could play a back three of Amartey Vestergaard and Syoncu with Albrighton at RWB and Thomas LWB to allow Evans, Ricardo and Castagne the night off. But I fear we’d be too weak and get turned over. Also, that would mean we couldn’t play either Barnes or Lookman meaning we’d then play at least one of Ihenacho or Vardy with Daka which would mean one of them wouldn’t get a rest.

oh god I need a lie down. It’s a tough job being a football manager 😂

Liverpool. One change from Saturday to tonight. For us I’d simply swap Vardy and Daka, but there’s a strong case for playing the same eleven as started on Saturday. If things go well we can make 5 subs in the second half

Quite simple for me, right now our EL campaign is in jeopardy and yet its still more conceivable that we put together enough to get out of the group and then navigate the knockouts in the hope of winning it and qualifying for the CL than getting top 4 this season via the PL.

Therefore, where possible I'd be going strong in the EL games in positions where we rely so heavily on certain players (Evans, Tielemans, Iheanacho)

They won 5-0 in second gear against a shit Watford side. We had a hell of a battle for 91 minutes on Saturday and we’ve got a smaller squad. And we’ve had more injuries. We need to make some changes to keep it fresh.
