I don't think Bertrand is that bad, but I don't think the way we've been setting up is right. He'd be fine in a traditional 4-4-2 with a supporting midfielder like Albrighton doing the box to box stuff. When he plays in a 3 / 5 as more of a wingback, we're left constantly exposed when he's caught upfield.

That being said, he hasn't been tried with the more solid Evans-based back three yet. I've yet to be convinced that Vestergaard is anything short of a liability, but Bertrand does bring benefits, not least his excellent set piece delivery.

i know football inflation is a bit mad; vestegaard is to my knowledge the 2nd most expensive cb in the history of the club - we should expect better

jonathan tah and tarkowski were the other options

...Burnley would have been asking £35-40m for him!!!

Knowing how desperate we were they would have had us over a barrel.  The Vestergaard fee would have probably been £5m less had we not found ourselves needing to replace Fofana.

Don’t think either have added much to the team. Was worried about Vestegaard anyway but was expecting way more from Bertrand. Looked good in the charity shield but since then he looks like a fullback dialling it in a bit.

People seem to forget this.

Vestegaard is not a crap player but of course he's struggled to fit in so far - I do wonder if Soyuncu's major struggles have affected him. He'll have Evans, Fofana, Amartey and Soyuncu ahead of him and possibly Justin too.

Bertrand will be behind Castagne, Justin, possibly Ricardo and Thomas too.

They cost £15m between them which is not peanuts but equally they're plugging a gap on the relative cheap and wages won't be daft either.

Think people also seem to forget that without these squad fillers we’d be playing kids in the Prem and likely shipping even more goals.

I’ve been so disappointed by Janick… but… his defensive stats are actually significantly better than Big dans this season…. Problem is people only remember misplaced passes and being sprinted past, as opposed to tackles and blocked shots.

Can’t recall a less able player with such a height advantage than Vestegard when the ball comes into the box

He is a pure example of someone promoted above their capability. I feel half like laughing, and half like feeling sorry for him as he ducks beneath another ball whistling over his head. He's like a big lumbering giant, it's hard not to feel for him as he lollops around the penalty area without a clue what he's doing.

I think that’s because he’s made critical mistakes. Some which he has got away with and some which he hasn’t. His last three games: 1. Spartak - got turned like he wasn’t there. Position was then poor for the cross in. 2. Brentford - last few minutes where you need composure. He stretches for a header with no control and puts us right under pressure. Luckily, no goal from the subsequent corner. 3. Tonight - the slip. The useless attempt at a header for their first. The mis-marking for the 2nd.

He makes blunders. of course he knows how to defend most of the time but those critical blunders are going to cost us goals. They already have sometimes. A ok-ish defender who gets his positioning wrong sometimes is understandable, it’s life. You deal with it. This guy makes errors which are on par sometimes with Lee Marshall. The fall over tonight, the last time I saw that was in our relegation season under Bassett/Adams.

I think that’s true of vester because of a disrupted pre season but Bertrand should have been better. As others have mentioned, perhaps his covid experience wasn’t straightforward….

I actually thought Bertrand did quite well in the first few games especially in going forward. Then he had Covid and maybe you are on to something …?

Or we instead could have signed better players...

We got a "kid" like JJ for about a third of what we paid for Vestergaard.

It may not be a coincidence that the best that Vestergaard has looked so far came when he was paired with Evans last weekend.

It must be a miracle because Vestergaard was not paired with Evans last weekend. lol

Don't mind typical FTers...

Elevating football over statistics. lol
