5-4-1 gives iheanacho and Maddison both a rest while giving our wingers a run out, as well as keeping momentum defensively with a back 5.

So everyone thinks we’ll change shape/formation after a few weeks of bedding into 3-4-1-2 ? Not sure that will happen with limited prep time for this.

Need to give Barnes and Lookman playing time. Only way to do it, really.

On the basis that, if we hadn’t won this competition, we’d have won f all until 2016 - and because of those great Wembley moments under MON - I care a lot about it. I also, always, want LCFC to win, passionately, so never really understood the “… don’t really care” sentiments.

That being said there is no reason why we shouldn’t progress in this competition fully utilising the squad. In fact, one distinct advantage of not getting knocked out is that you keep the peripheral players motivated and fit by playing competitive fixtures:

Ward

Daley-Campbell, Benkovic, Vestergaard, Bertrand

Lookman, Hamza, KDH, Barnes

Perez

Daka

But I don’t pick that side for some sort of suicide mission. I pick it because there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t stand a chance - and might actually give Vestergaard et al some confidence.

It’s an interesting nuance, isn’t it? Is there any point giving them time in a position/shape that we aren’t going to play, maybe? Is it better to give them time in a shape we are playing? 🤷

Similar to what I was going to suggest. No point risking first 11 for this game.

Just think even if he isn't starting Rodger will have Tielmans on the bench just in case. He never seems to get a full break in any competition, (at least not against any top level opposition).

Need to be able to play more than one shape, tbh

Totally agree. Just as surely as we also need more players that can play what, presently, seems to be out favoured shape. 🤷

We will stick with the 3 at the back as that looks like the preferred system now.
We should then look to get some player who aren’t playing into the team.

Evans and Vardy will both be rested surely.
I am not sure how Barnes plays in this formation, maybe in the Maddison role?

Daka and Perez to start up front id imagine and Thomas on the left.

Not sure who plays wing backs, given Timmy was sore in Moscow and Ricardo is still getting back to 100%

Anyway, I would love another 1-0 win and move us on towards another day out at Wembley.

I’ve no idea, obviously, how Rodgers will approach this, but I’m pretty certain he’ll want to win it.

So I expect Schmeichel, Evans, Tielemans, Iheanacho  & Vardy to be rested.

And I expect Ward, Bertrand, Vestergaard, Mendy (if eligible?), Perez, Lookman & Barnes to start.

Brighton have a good crop of youngsters, there's every chance they'll want to give a few a run out.

Anyone remember a horrible League Cup tie against Brighton at Filbert Street in 1994? It was very near the end of Brian Little's reign and we were a Premier League side and they were 3rd tier I think. They beat us 2-0 even though they had Jimmy Case sent off who was over 40 years old at the time. As cup defeats go, that one ranks with Harlow Town, Exeter City, Wycombe Wanderers and Newport County.

Let's tinker, but let's play a side good enough to say we're going to win.

It's a major trophy if Pep's Man City win it.

It's not so important if Swansea beat Bradford in the final.

I like trophies, I like playing at Wembley. Let's do this shit.

Not too many changes that we’re incredibly weak but we rest who we need to (maybe Castagne aside).

Lookman Daka Barnes

Subs: Jakupovic, B. Nelson, Bertrand, Castagne, Hamza, Soumare, Perez, Wakeling, Maswanhise.

something has to give given the depth of the squad and this is it, not sure why Vardy came off, Nacho should be protected too and a few youngsters to get a game, If Albrighton can play start him instead of Daley-Campbell and put VDC on the bench instead of Castagne but I believe I read he's out for a couple of weeks

Mostly, but no Ricardo - Bertrand. We have enough depth now to rotate the entire squad and still have a chance to win, especially with five subs. And if we lose, we lose.

You play the formation that best suits/fits the players available.

I imagine that DIFFERENT formations are tried/used in training.

I think we’ll lose this one as Brighton will be more motivated to progress. Not sure that would bother me too much as we should focus on the League and Europe.

Someone above suggested Daley-Campbell at right back and I think that’s a good idea. Albrighton is injured and save Ricardo. I’d go 4231 and bring back Lookman and Barnes.

The idea should be to rotate players, not to "throw" the game.

Ideally, though, we should be resting Youri, Vardy and Evans, and giving the likes Daka, Barnes and Lookman game time.

They have Liverpool away at the weekend in the PL, so I think we are likely to see a fair bit of their youngsters/reserves, although Lamptey is also likely to play as he continues to round back into full match fitness following a lengthy injury spell on the sidelines.

I went to most games that season, but have no recollection what so ever of this game. Having said that I can’t remember what I had for breakfast this morning.
