I don't know how I got by before I was able to go to the Mercury website and learn the latest news in betting odds for managerial vacancies that aren't actually vacant as nobody has been sacked, what Man Utd and Liverpool fans are saying on Twitter, or how we ever handled transfer news without 80 articles a day about big clubs revealing their T R A N S F E R S T A N C E

It really has gone to the dogs. More pop-ups than Pornhub.

I don't get pop ups but then I use an add blocker.

I've always been amazed that in a county the size of Leicestershire, the Mercury monopolises the local press.

They get away with churning out shit because there's no competition, so why even bother to do a good job when there's no alternative for people?

If you want better quality news then pay for it. Simple.

This. Ultimately, it’s a free service - I get it’s rubbish and the OP has a point about the click baiting but you get what you pay for with journalism. For instance, the Times Sport is excellent and articles from writers such as Winter and Northcroft are streets ahead of Leicestershire Live. I’ve heard that the Guardian has a good sports section too.

The newspaper company in about 12 UK cities is owned by The Daily Mirror group (trading as Reach PLC) and has been for some time. There's no competition because they'd be chewed up and spat out in seconds.

I think I went there a couple of times and realised it was the zombified digital remains of a hollowed-out newspaper. Those articles are so bland I would be surprised if there’s a human writing them. They seem to pulling in the ad revenue, I guess, or someone’s bankrolling them for influence.

It's not even an apology for a newspaper.

Half of the "news" articles are actually adverts disguised as news. "Market Harborough cafe has complete revamp".

I just put them on metaphorical block and don't even open them.

If everyone did the same they would have to change eventually.

No popup blocker can save you from the PornHub pop ups on the Mercury (or the Mercury popups on PornHub)

It’s absolutely painful. They had an article up yesterday about a lad we had who played for the 23’s and how he sat next to Mahrez & Kante on the bikes in the gym.

Three times today they’ve tweeted that Wilf has new agents.

Who. Cares.

Don't read it then.

If you want better journalism then go on the Guardian or whoever and pay for it.

Why should they offer a free service.

OK, I don't normally get drawn into arguments on here, but I can't accept your superiority.

Right off I don't read it, but sometimes I open an article without looking.

Then let's also leave aside the fact that many folks can't afford paid sites such as The Times.

What I do read is a broad range of online newspapers along with articles from many websites such as 442, football insider, sportsmole etc etc.

Some are better and friendlier than others but I take each as I find them, and all earn money by selling adverts and the data they collect from visitors.  This I accept.

The Mercury is another level however. It is seriously a bad model which needs exposing to the cold light of day. Calling it Click Bait doesn't cover it, it's verging on dishonest. Go to any story and underneath you'll find links to eye catching stories that turn out to be months old.

I could go on but I'd be pushing at an open door. Just don't defend them in such a disingenuous manner by saying "why should they offer a free service".  They could do it in an honest manner like 99% of other sites.

I object to your off hand manner and I could say to you "why deride other people on here" when you could choose not to read it.

No superiority from me, it just seems weird for you to say "boycott" something that's free and isn't forced upon you.

Are these people paid to do this or just volunteers? Just look at those articles! The only other article missing in that screenshot is the one they continuously regurgitate telling us that COVID is going to wipe us all out tomorrow!

I remember hearing somewhere, that LeicestershireLive and the other “……....Lives” got bought out by Rupert Murdoch or some other tabloid media mogul…

You can pretty much put “The Sun” or “Daily Mail” above anything from that website and it makes total sense.
