Every season there is a player that stands out, delivering consistently good performances game after game. But in the following season withers and dies and within 2 seasons drops into obscurity. This is known as the Drinkwater syndrome inflicting players of the like of Delhi Ali, Ross Barkley etc. Often the sufferer and their manager fails to recognise the symptoms .

It was after he got covid in March time with that international break and by all accounts hadit pretty bad for a couple of weeks, that he started going downhill, I do wonder whether he ever really got over it.

Harsh to say Drinkwater only had one good season with us. It's even worse to compare Drinkwater and Soyuncu with that little $hit Ali.

I don't think Soyuncu is a bad player at all/

No. It's just the sh1tty system BR wants to play out from the backside Man Sh1tty Style. They don't have the skills to play around TikkiTakka Style from the backend. It's a BR thing because he want s to succeed the incumbents at Man Sh1tty and Barca.

Even Wolves lump it at times from the back.  Why play like that when we don't have the personnel/skills to do it.

Drinkwater was carried by Kante in 15/16, I will say that to my dying day. He should send Kante 15% of his weekly salary, as Kante is the main reason Drinkwater got that big money  move to Chelsea

This isn’t even close to being true. They complimented eachother and worked perfectly for the system we were playing. You don’t win the league by 10 points when you’ve got a passenger in midfield (which is essentially what you’re suggesting).

I don't really care about Delhi Ali, what about our players?

There's question marks over Jaipur Maddison, Bangalore Soumare and Ahmedabad Perez.

And not forgetting Patna Daka.

...Or Big Dan Almaty and Karachi Iheanacho.

They're not in India  but Dhanbad Amartey and Kolkata Iheanacho would work.

Must try harder. Back to the coronavirus thread for you lol

We've had loads of players off it this season. Cags isn't the only one. N'didi, Tielemans, Castange, Evans, Barnes, Kasper...etc, have all not been at the same levels. Add to that the likes of Bertrand and Vestergard bringing the overall quality of our team down, then it only will lead to a decline.

The Fofana injury hit us hard. He's a major source of confidence for us, not only because of how good a defender he is, but also how good on the ball he is. He gives the rest of the team confidence that he will sort out the back and others can get involved further up the pitch. Without him, we've looked nervous at the back, especially when playing out and we end up trying to play too safe and put ourselves in a hole.

I think Cags form has been more down to the amount of different players he’s played with in the back line. Defensively he’s been as good as ever IMO, he wins headers and gets blocks in.

His problem this season has been dithering on the ball, making silly passes and giving it away needlessly.

When you consider the LB has been occupied by 4 different players this season, some as left back sometimes as left wing back, with varying degrees of sitting in and pushing forwards, he has also had several different CB partners, and played in a back 4 and 3.

There is no consistency, due to injuries, form and the amount of games we are playing.

When we have a settled back line, players instinctively know where each other are and can play simple passes without having to think too much, this has been impossible this season and a large reason for our defensive woes.

I don't think Cags has been anywhere near as good defensively this season.  He's been at fault for quite a few goals.

I do think he probably had one good season, and that's got everybody rating him so highly, when he's probably just an okay centre half and nothing more.

That's the trouble with people in this Country, a player plays well for half a season and suddenly they're the next big thing. Consistency is the main thing in football and what separates the good players from the average.

The comparison is absurd.

Both players have been critical to our recent success.

Drinkwater was still playing okay in 16/17 until he got injured. In fairness, I’ll begrudge no one the opportunity to move on, double their salary and life a lifestyle they want to. He’s struggle since, however it was never really the right club for him. He was a very good player for us, however if he dropped that 1%, you could get away with it, as our expectations were not as high. Doing that at Chelsea when you’re competing for a starting spot against players that are consistently on their game, may break some people.

Soyuncu has largely been exposed this season and hasn’t played to the standard we know he’s capable of. Some of that is system, I’d say some of it is the midfields fault and some of it is over confidence. Lots of players go through this.

I still believe we need to tighten up at the back and play two semi holding players to put trust back into that defence.
