“You consider Hamza Choudhury was playing at centre-half – what a performance that was from him. I rang him last night to tell him he would have to play there rather in midfield. He just accepted it and played to a really high level.

You think CBs have to be really tall but Hamza did great today, Justin is also very good at CB.

We now have three very tall CBs in Vestergard, Benkovic and Nelson and that is certainly useful,  particularly with Kaspers's tendency to flap at high crosses but Ndidi, Amartey and Fofana are not easily beaten in the air. The switch from zonal marking should help us defend crosses and corners much better. Even shorter players like Justin and Choudury can be very effective if the right system is used.

I'm just imagining @davieG on Facetime to Hamza last night lol

Great to see him put in another great performance. He steps in when needed, puts in a shift every time and never moans when he’s not playing. Hats off to Hamza.

He was superb lol I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Choudhury, always wanted him to come good. Would be quite something if this is how it came about.

Rodgers comparing him to Mascherano is brilliant as well.

Great man management, would have given Choudhury a huge confidence boost.

Great game, could be my man of the match.

Him or Albrighton

Clearly Brendan thought Hamza was MotM

Don't think anyone expected him to be the answer to our Centre Back problems but he's stepped in brilliantly - keep it up!

Immense today. Asked to play in an unfamiliar role but Showed passion and played for the shirt. Some great tackles and good awareness. Maybe he has found a new niche as the next big Dan.

Soo happy for Hamza today. Was shocked to see him at the start of the game playing CB but what a performance. I hope this can kick start his career now. He was my MOM today also.

Love Hamza The Hammer Choudhury. He’s young himself but was so encouraging to the youth players yesterday and was such a leader out there.

By all accounts, he’s really well liked around the club— we need characters like him on the side. He also has the tools to be a versatile player for us for years.

Why did none of us suggest making Hamza a centre half?

Because he tends to be reckless in the tackle, and that could lead to penalties and / or red cards. But yesterday was definitely eye-opening. Rodgers prefers the team to have a high line and defend aggressively, and in that case aggression is good as challenges won't be in the box. He's fast, strong and his distribution of the ball after we won it was especially impressive.

When Ndidi plays there, his aerial strength is useful, but WIlf is clumsy (hence given away multiple penalties) and his distribution isn't great. So Hamza might be a better option than Ndidi as an emergency CB.

I think he could be tried there as a permanent position change, but he'd need half a season of games under his belt to truly adapt, and we can't afford that. Mascherano is the best example though, started as a CDM but in his Barcelona days moved to a defender. Because they always had so much of the ball and defended high up the pitch, it meant at times he looked like an even better player than the one that had already impressed in the Premier League.

Transfermarkt show Hamza as being 1.78 m tall (5ft 8ins ) Surely not tall enough to play CB against teams that pose an aerial threat.
