Russia are appealing their fifa ban to CAS

I expect they could win - that could get ugly for fifa …..

If they're successful (we know what CAS are like), then I suspect other teams will still refuse to play them.  Ultimately, I guess Russia could win an uncontested World Cup - but what better way to show their isolation on a world stage.

Plenty of countries globally are not bothered by Russia’s actions - they wouldn’t be alone in Qatar.  Of course it could wreck the World Cup - but if fifa say they have no choice but to allow Russia back in and they qualify because no one will play them, then it falls to countries to decide if they are to withdraw from the WC and for it to fail. Tbh, how many of us would care of the Qatar WC was to fail ??.

It's staggering that Putin/Russia feel they could be invaded but have no compulsion about doing the same.

I wish the Russian population would open their eyes and realise what they leader is doing. I appreciate it is difficult for them when their newspapers, radio and TV are all controlled by the Kremlin, what a way to live.

Qatar should never have been awarded the competition but that is another story.

My wife and I didn't go back after the recent school holiday. My school is the US, British and Canadian Embassy school. All staff were told to leave Russia the day after we didn't go back. We have previous experience of the revolution in Egypt to draw upon! The school's escape plan failing flights was to drive to the Finnish border! No chance! Not on a bus full of American teachers. Anyway, we are the only school to have told teachers to leave. There's hundreds of expat teachers still in Russia as we speak. I hope they get out before martial law sets in. Shame on their schools for continuing as though nothing is happening.

This is true. I know one. We last heard from her four days ago and she was very frightened - unsure about how she was going to get out.

They'd be pretty much by themselves based on the UN vote 😂

Cancel the World Cup and make it an invitational event in Qatar. Nothing to stop that happening …. Right?

And the TV companies would be under heavy pressure to boycott the event . No tv money or sponsors what would be the point ?

Humanitarian corridors? Or target practice? They certainly seem to need it. They have history for targeting aid convoys and blaming local partisans. I have little faith in this ending well.

this is a very interesting development. Who pulled the plug? A victim of the sanctions?

Is our information we get now being controlled? ( devils advocate statement).

We have BBC/ITV and other journalists holed up in Kiev, living in underground stations etc. who somehow manage to report on what's happening and giving us here most of the facts of what's happening there.

Fair play to all of them, being away from their families and living in a war zone for however long. They live among the victims of this.

Heard today that many in Kiev and Kharkiv have no access to food, water, sanitation, medicines etc.

Can you imagine you, a loved one, your child needs medicines that help them to live a basic life?

You have had to leave your home and everything you have, behind, not knowing when, if ever, you'll be able to go back home. I can't imagine the effect that has on people's mental health.

Posting this doesn't fully express my sorrow for those innocents and the anxiety ab0ut their future.

Tragedy like we've never really experienced before. Yes, there are other examples in history, but this seems to be so close to us, somewhat because we are close friends with Ukraine and many of us have working (or otherwise) relationships with Ukrainians.

I do feel that, if the tables were turned and we were invaded by Russia, Ukrainian people living here would get involved in defending us.

Hearing from a colleague in Moscow there is a rumour that Russian men over 18 can't leave the country in case they need to be called up.

Do deal a remove the Russian troops from Ukraine and promise to never invade Ukraine or any other country again, Putin steps down then they can play in the world cup.

We wish, but that can be FIFA'S response. FIFA could also say did Ukraine get an appeal when you invaded them.
