Clearly he's very technically gifted but I have my doubts. 9 minutes ago, Tommy Fresh said: Hard to gauge defensive attributes when he plays for Feyenoord. I do feel he’s more of an 8/10 hybrid type of player. So not sure we could play both him and Maddison in the middle of the park together without being overrun. Might be better with a starting midfield of: KDH - Wilf - Maddison With Kokcu on the bench initially. Or could play centrally with Maddison from the right.

Because Maddison will retreat to a deeper role so he fits better with England, allowing CDK/Kokcu to sit more naturally further forward

Whatever the distance was, he wasn't exactly busting a gut like KDH to do something useful and invariably gave the ball away when he got it. Even the Birch has covered some distance round the pitch over the last few years but that doesn't mean he's contributed much during the actual match either 🤣 Edited 7 July 2022 by volpeazzurro 1

By most metrics, Tielemans out performed KDH last season. 1

I wouldn't know where to look, but I'm sure one of the stat gurus could find something that maybe suggests/disproves that assumption? Admittedly not all midfielders are the same and KDH is quite an all action player compared to many others in the Premiership in fairness. Ndidi too when playing is very energetic. Whilst accepting that he has a different style, Tielemans last season compared to those two and even Maddison appeared very half hearted at times, sometimes jogging back and meandering about and not picking up runners from the opposition. I don't think he's ever been a great tackler but in fairness that's not really his forte anyway. Regardless of distance covered, I refer more to his actual performance and contribution to the game in general of which there was a noticeable difference to the previous two seasons. All players can have a bad game or two but it was more than that for me. Quite often he could be seen shouting and/or gesticulating to his fellow players who would be busting their guts whereas if he'd have been putting more effort in, he could have blocked a player or gone for a particular ball or tackle. If I'd have been KDH or Maddison I'd have told him to shut the **** up and pull his finger out. Possibly he's a Rodgers favourite and can get away with murder. With last seasons efforts in mind he'd never get in a Pep or Klopp team in a million years unless he upped his energy and performance levels massively, in which case he'd have been conning us. 1

I'm a bit biased in fairness, I think sometimes stats and so called metrics cover up a multitude of sins and you can read into them what you may. For example, completed passes? Might look good on paper but like some of our players last year, the majority would have been a few feet backwards or sideways in our own half and achieved absolutely nothing. On paper though, some stato would be very satisfied with them. You could perhaps argue that top players like Pirlo or Cambiasso were never top of the mileage covered charts but, their reading of the game was so good they didn't need to be to be a huge influence. Sometimes, the other way round they can be unequivocal ie Iheanacho might look ungainly and get criticised at times for not covering huge mileage at pace, yet he scored 12/13 goals the previous season in a short space of time which is the only stat that really counts as a striker in some ways. You'd never have employed Yakubu based on the majority of his different stats and metrics but nevertheless during his career, his goal record was up with some of the best overall.

Yeah I completely get your point and lots of stats can be explained by the way teams play and not necessarily by individual talent. But even then looking at progressive passes, passes into the box, passes that lead to shots and expected assists, Youri comes out on top, all while having a better pass completion. He is genuinely a very good passer and creative player. He also had better tackles and interception numbers that KDH which surprised me. I think we were harsh on Youri last season because of several high profile errors and the fact he wasn’t as good as he has been. Imo he could go to a top team and be an important cog in the machine for them. 1

Ball recoveries and duel % show he's very capable, a lot of this can be very subjective though. The necessity for a midfielder who's strong defensively isn't really what we require if we allow Ndidi to get back to what he does best. To have 2 destroyers in there means we simply have to get a right winger who scores and assists 15-20 a season. 2

It’s true, those two plus that lad from Chelsea, even on loan, would be a damn good window. It’s not the first I have seen that tweet either, I hate social media some times. 2
