Great news. Won't have been the most difficult negotiations ever.

Brilliant news.

Lets hope he builds on last year and we aren't faced with another situation where we've a bright academy prospect who's been chuffed up serious wages to be in line with the senior players of this squad for 5 years but then fades away and is stuck here. I'm confident that won't happen but there's still an element of the unknown.

He won't be on a massive amount initially will he?

the inference is that it will be around 65/70k per week

Which if he drops off and shows he's only a mediocre PL player / excellent Championship player will be a big issue for us but I can see the problem a club like ours faces.

It's a bit easier when the academy players progress in a linear fashion like Barnes for example. Almost every season of progression has seen a new reflective contract to the point that in his early to mid twenties there feels a degree of assurance that even if his progression bottoms out his value and worth to the team is of such a standard that putting them in the band of top earners is logical.

The point is that he’s a starter for us in the majority of games.
why should he sign a 5 year deal unless it’s at that kind of money ?  He’s not a kid any more and I imagine he’s been on a pretty low contract (comparatively)

of course the power remains with the player. If he excels further then we’ll have to offer him a new deal in two years at 100k+
we can’t just leave him on 65k until the end of year 4 and hope to negotiate a new deal at that point. If we do that then his people will just demand the missing monies be added to his new deal.

if he drops off then he still gets his 65k each week - we don’t get to renegotiate down !

we could have tried to offer him 50k but why should he take that

btw, this is all supposition on my part  ……..

Pffff no way is that anywhere close to reality. The club aren't as stupid as we think they are, give them at least some credit. He'll have been put on something around 30k per week, that way if he keeps performing we can keep giving him raises to encourage him further.

I agree, it's par for the course in this situation. I just look at our wage bill and try and work out how we lower it by about a third and still try and compete.

I think the only way you do that is the conveyor belt of buy low / progression  / sell high has to be on optimum.

We seem to be trapped somewhat right now though.

I had heard a rumour that he’d turned down £57k p/w a few months back from someone who have family who know some of his relatives, but no idea if that is correct or not! Good news we’ve got him on a long term contract, hopefully he continues to build on a promising debut season.

Are you one of those who thinks hamza is earning ten quid and a pack of Doritos ??.
