The spine of his Newcastle side are top class internationals. Pope, Trippier, Botman, Guimaraes, Wilson, Isak and hes has expensive flair players: St Max, Almiron, Willock, DesLinton who all came at over £20m.

This is no unfathomable feat of coaching its just good buying added to the good players that were there.

Fringe/non top players - Burn, Wood, Targett, Schar have all had periods where theyve delivered really strongly in the prem.

How on earth he's got that starting XI of players to 3rd in the table is just astonishing.

.. the league is inconsistent!!!

Many believed he was a good coach and needed to be at a club that would back him!!!

Not sure why people seem so surprised at what he is presently achieving.  Many thought that when he came in they would go down, the January window last season, was always going to give them the edge.

The biggest surprise is the approach that they have taken in quietly building their team, fair play to how they have chosen to progress their club.

Really hope we beat these fvckers. Think they've got the Saudi money in they've been unbearable, on and off the pitch.

Beating them may bring them down a peg or two.

Hard to call what kind of line-up we'll put out.

Would be great if our World Cup players come back ready to go and not injured, especially Maddison.

Newcastle looked a bit off the pace without Wilson so if he doesn't play, I'd fancy our chances. Got to keep the likes of Almiron, Guimaraes and Trippier quiet.

Everyone knew it was coming with their new investment but, I must admit, the speed of their turnaround has really surprised me. I think Eddie Howe is doing an outstanding job with them.

I do think they’ll start to falter at some point though and that ultimately they’ll finish somewhere around 6th-9th. I hope their decline starts with us and our rise continues, but there is no telling what will happen after the World Cup. Momentum is broken and that’s a good thing for the teams out of form, but bad for teams like Newcastle and us.

I think Howe is an excellent manager.  Got Bournemouth to the Prem too, and kept them there for a few years without whining about the lack of money.

Can’t see anything but an absolutely massive home win. They are in a good run of form so the break is at the worst possible time for them. We have time to re group and will come back and show them just Howe ;) a Rodgers masterclass pans out.

Boxing Day matches are going to be difficult to call. So many players not match fit after such a long lay off, while others will be returning from the World Cup injured or just plain knackered. Then we'll have the January transfer window. It could be the middle of February before everything settles down and form becomes apparent.

The tune he's got out of Almiron who'd done absolutely nothing in the 3+ years he'd been here and converting Joelinton in to a CM has been very very impressive.

Isak has barely played and certainly not on this recent run of wins, neither has Saint-Maxim.

They have momentum and confidence and a good blend of ability and as you say solid PL players.

Howe always struck me as a Rodgers type who could never get his teams to defend well, even when trying to control football matches. We're much better trying to focus on taking risks. Low and behold, they have the best defence this season and both of us have now kept the most clean sheets 😂😂😂😂

Which one of those are top class internationals? 😂

I have a proper soft spot for Geordies, but probably the most rational hatred anyone could have for a football team since their blood money investment.

Their football is decent now, but there hasn't been a result I've watched where it wasn't at least partially down to their opponents being in complete disarray - Chelsea the latest predictable example. They've just been playing everyone at exactly the right time since September rolled around. Scatter in some incredibly questionable reffing decisions in their favour and I'm led to believe that if we're at it, we either win this game or get cheated out of it.

Do it for Jamaal. Not the Newcastle player, the one their owners murdered.

:plancque:

OK, I'll go touch some grass now that's out my system. lol

While it's always nice to see the greedy six dismantled, a part of me will also feel a little sickened to see Newcastle get into the Champions League before us given how we bottled it for two seasons.

Fair play if they see the job through but it's one I hope we derail, starting here.

Behave.

The reason they're doing so well is Wilson is now finally fit, Guimarares has strengthened the midfield and Almiron is in a purple patch.

Joelinton becoming a midfield player has made a difference too, they'll hit a bad patch soon enough.

Wouldn't want to swap too many of theirs for ours but on the contrary, I think Howe's done a sterling job with them Almiron and Deslinton in particular in the different roles he's recognised and given them. We've had a good run but I'd sooner be sitting with Howe as our manager instead of Rodgers. At least he's built a team.

I think his brother Joe is the better of the Linton boys :)
