We were never seriously in. With players like that going for actual obscene amounts we just put a rumour out there to appear if we were willing to splash the cash on an exotic sounding player. The club would have known way beforehand that it would have taken 50-60m if not more because of January but they have to look like they are doing something. I reckon they'd have bricked it if Fiorentina accepted the offer. 1

Bit of both I think they want to show they can outspend clubs like us but if Gonzales has agreed to sign for us, shows what type of club Newcastle are by bumping up the price whilst negotiations are ongoing !
