Still no word on who will make up Maresca's backroom staff ahead of pre-season next week. Vitello (sp?) was touted as his assistant, but perhaps there's still work permit wranglings going on there.

Although to be fair, do we as a club ever announce these kinds of things?

We’re going to be playing catch up all summer.

Im seeing positives and negatives.

“Likens football to chess” :revenge:

We’ve seen enough of that over the last few years.

Positives are probably outweighing in the negatives though. :fc:

“He honestly did open me up to a different way of thinking, especially about how to take up the right positions."

The chess bit seems to be more about the initial team selection and deciding on how you're going to play based on that selection. The way Man City play, they have structured attacks and patterns of play, but they use certain ones against different opposition. For example whenever they played Burnley under Dyche, they used to play huge diagonal switches of play in quick succession to shift their deep block from one side to another and make space. They usually absolutely battered them as a result. Against Liverpool, it's a totally different approach. Against Arsenal they brought Kyle Walker back into the team despite him missing 8 PL games previously.

A nice bit I read was this:

“He’ll want players there who can play in any position across a back four or five. He’ll want defenders who you can shift into the centre of midfield if he needs them to, a bit like John Stones. They’ll probably be super aggressive, trying to make sure that when the opponent gets the ball, he doesn’t have time to look at the picture in front of him. He can only look down and play a pass."

I'll look forward to seeing that gusto and aggression back in the team, it's been missing since Covid!

Ah but what you're talking about is tactics rather than just kick and rush

It may have already been mentioned, but what formation does he generally use?

...I believe he said he would play whatever formation that suits the players in his charge!!!

So as he is in effect building his own team I assume he will be looking to play 3-4-1-2.

Yep, still not one signing with just over a month to go now - hopefully not a repeat of last summer!

And Brendan told us after each match that we lacked aggression and we were too passive. But he did nothing about it.

I want some enthusiasm and confidence back. Enzo is talking a good game.

He has nothing to do with the Womens team.

Willie Kirk was their DoF but then stepped into manager role. As it stands there is no DoF of the Female set up.

Also think you are talking utter codswallop when you say the increasing of wage bill is an occupational hazard rather than a dereliction of duty. We didn’t need a wage bill of that size to qualify for Europe for two season consecutively.

Ok, fair enough -  as i said i wasn't sure if the women's team was within his remit ;)

The wage bill increased by necessity when we were playing regularly in europe as we needed to have depth in every position, thus a lot of signings at that point were upgrades to a back up players - for example Daka was never a first choice but back up for vardy, yet he was able to demand a higher salary than say, Ulloa.  So the increase in the wage bill wasn't to qualify for europe it was to strengthen the depth of the squad to cope with playing in europe - thus, yes, it was a necessary part of the job.

We managed it in 2021 when qualifying for Europe after participating in 2020. Didn’t bloat the wage bill at that point.

I don't believe you read the rest of my post.

I did because you used the example of a player, Ulloa who left three years before Daka arrived.

We managed to win a FA cup and come 5th in league whilst taking part in European competition. That season we didn’t need to increase the wage bill substantially to manage the extra games.

He's got one hell of a job on his hands if the first 2 Rudkin signings are anything to go by.

Every other team in the championship would bite their hands off for Coady. Crazy levels of negativity.

These lot wouldn't have just told Churchill to surrender to the Nazis, they'd have given Hitler Pukka pie and chips on arrival to Blighty

Both signings were heavily linked before Maresca had been lined up to come in, evidently club identified but presume Maresca is happy with them.

As long as it’s not keeper to Cb, Cb to Rb, Rb to keeper , keeper to Lb , Lb to Cb, Cb to Dm , Dm to keeper I’ll be happy .

There will be elements to that unfortunately. It happens when teams setup in a deep block and challenge you to break them down.

Man City are really clever at getting round it through structured movement. For example KDB plays on the last shoulder then runs back to create spaces behind him that others can exploit.

My prediction is that the first 10 or so games you see a lot of possession without making many chances. If that happens you’ve got to give him time. I’d expect by Christmas time for it to click into gear and see some heavy score lines against weaker teams. Obviously we can’t wait forever but even Pep struggled in his first season. The thing with system football is that it’s the system that creates chances… so a pro is that you rely less on individual brilliance. The con is if the system isn’t working, it looks crap. Which is what happened with Rodgers really.
