Really good result.

 

winks was outstanding.

 

Dont think Ricardo is getting enough credit for his performance, he kept it simple and was available all the time, he also was unlucky with a couple of blocked efforts.

A few words in defence of a few issues:

 

Ndidi - i think it is worth remembering that he is still very new to the position and, as maresca said, post match, he did get into the box, he wasn't devoid of contributions going forward.  More significantly, in the first half, when we played more to plan, ndidi did a fine job of restricting coventry to practically nothing and forcing them to hoof long.  I'm sure we'll bring someone in who is more attacking, a natural #8, but tactically ndidi did his job today, at least until, as a whole, the team sort of lost the plot.

 

Mads - granted we conceded off a corner but there wasn't much he could have done, besides that, he made one really good punch, but i don't remember there being any indecision or sketchines from him? ultimately, it's his debut, and the team generally are probably still rusty, also coventry look really good at set pieces.

 

Vestergaard - we all know he'll get exposed when teams counter, but realistically we shouldn't be allowing teams those chances - we need to be better on the ball and defend better higher up.  When we played well in the first half, he looked perfectly competent.  As a back up for coady, he'll do just fine.

 

Lack of creativity - for a team allegedly lacking creativity we still had 20 shots against a solid defensive team that sat deep for the first half of the game, if we do bring in more creative players we'll be unstoppable!

 

The really bad half hour - yes, we lost the plot for the first half hour of the second half, against a team that knew how to exploit us - given time, we should be able to play for 90 minutes the way we played the first 45 and the last half hour (9 minutes? really?)  But it's worth noting that even during that period we still played some decent football going forward.

 

Lots to learn from, lots of room for improvement, but only details - the reality is this is not going to be a case of 'maybe by october we'll start to click' - we already have clciked, now we just need to fine tune and get comfortable playing this way.  And such a breath of fresh air after last season.

Simms couldn’t get the better of Faes. You can just tell that most of these players are a cut above this division.

I'm pleasantly surprised how well the team have adapted to the new tactics already. Far, far from perfect, but I honestly didn't think we'd see as much solid build-up as we did.

Rode our luck at times but a massive win. The most concerning thing was how easy it was to run at us and get in behind. Naturally it is going to happen from time to time when we play a high line but it was far too easy at times.

Replacements in the starting XI for Mcateer and Ndidi, and maybe another winger for cover and we’re ready for the season. Mcateer looked good enough to be an option though, easing our lack of depth out wide a little. It’s clear that Ndidi shouldn’t be the furthest forward central midfielder, he looked lost whenever he received the ball high up the pitch, and his first touch often let him down. Casadei and Rak-Sakyi should slot in nicely in these 2 positions, if they come in as rumoured.  
 

Mavididi really grew into the game well after a shaky start, by the end he was our most threatening attacking option. Doyle had an amazing first half and will be an excellent player for us this year. Hermansen looked solid, as did winks despite one or two

sloppy passes. Kdh though is a cut above at this level, great to see him posing more of an attacking threat.
 

We looked much better with Praet and Iheanacho replacing Ndidi and Vardy, and with the current crop as it is, this should be our first choice XI. 
 

Oh and Vestegaard is still shit

Momentum! Momentum! Momentum! We now have positive momentum. Just contrast that with the negative momentum created by Rodger's trying to make a point in the opening game last season. As we might have expected, due to our lack of a proper preseason, we were undercooked and lacking match fitness. In addition we are clearly far from the finished article in terms of personnel. Coady's enforced absence due to injury is crucial as Vestergaard, who may be able to pass a ball, is a defensive liability due to his total lack of pace. We also lack a creative attacking midfielder to provide defence splitting passes in the final third. Ndidi cannot pass the ball so he is clearly a square peg in a round hole. Praet, as he proved when he came on and changed the game, should be starting but probably isn't because he's off to pastures new. Bottom line is that we are still a few peices short, but the window is open for a few more weeks. If Rudkin and co (I say this advisedly as I cannot believe they are still in their posts) can use the loan system or some of the money we have from player sales effectively then we will be the team to beat in the Champo this season, as we're only going to get better. The win over Cov today in their cup final, a game we really had no right to win, will have a huge positive impact on our chances of going on and gaining promotion straight back to the 'money' league!

We need a really strong proven RW, KM did ok but isn't going to be good enough for a full season.

 

We looked better when Vardy had gone off hopefully that's the last game he starts

Most important thing was to win, yes it would have been nice to be more free flowing. Vardy had a stinker we have to start Nacho, he made things happen when he came on.

Massive win - some of the news players looked very good. Winks, Doyle and Mavididi. 
 

If he stays Praet needs more game time. Thought Vesty was up and down, and Vardy struggled to get into the game. Mcateer did alright, but looks a bit raw. Early days though.

YES, it gets decisions (mostly) right. But it kills the excitement of scoring goals which is completely wrong for a game where the excitement IS in scoring goals.

Im really glad we don’t have to suffer it this season.

I don't get this - VAR or no VAR when the ball hits the net i'm jumping round the room and screaming - it's called emotion, it's not something any VAR decision can change.  If i'm brought down to earth by VAR afterwards - so be it - a goals is a goal, enjoy the moment, repent at leisure if it's scrubbed off.
