won’t get the plaudits he deserves without the goals and assists unfortunately

Winks has been great so absolutely not an argument against him, but goals and assists ultimately win you matches. I think the opposite to this and that people put too much stock in consistency, which is way easier to achieve for defensive and midfield players over attacking players when it’s always going to be less consistent in attacking players.

Like when our fans voted Maguire over Vardy for POTS, when Wellens won it over King and when many were calling for KDH to win over Maddison. Also more and more these days I hear the opinion that Kante won us the league single handedly and was a much better player than Mahrez or Vardy.

Not saying Winks won’t deserve it, he’s been excellent so far, but I tend to think the opposite to you and that people underrate the importance of players who get the goals and assists and that those are the players who can win games on their own and overrate “consistency” to an extent.

Tielemans also got wildly overrated by some on here in his final couple of seasons, to point people were still calling him “world class” and “our most important player” and “he’ll be harder to replace than Maddison or Barnes” even when he’d been crap for 2 years because he was a “metronome” (even when he was missing passes all the time).

We’ve had several games this season already where the difference has been our finishing and how clinical we are at creating and finishing goals. It’s a cliche but the biggest difference between the Championship and Premier League has been the finishing and how much more rarely you’re punished for making mistakes in this division.

Winks is the heartbeat of this team. He is the one player that we simply cannot replace.  The 'almost mutual swap' (yes I know money was involved) that we did with spuds is one of the best mutual deals for both clubs. Maddison flying for them and making them fly as a consequence (dammit) but winks doing the same for us. He controls the games in the championship. He is awesome.  Genuinely, if someone said have maddison back but you'd have to lose winks then I'd refuse. Winks is exactly what we need and our best player by a mile.

wouldn't surprise me if he gets a tactical booking on Saturday. it will give him a nice 2 week break and would miss Swansea away where we should be able to deal with it.

Last thing we want is him to get booked against Swansea and miss Sunderland.

I think he is slightly more important in home matches than away ones too.

Brilliant replacement for Maddison!..

He's not such a show pony and hasn't got a dodgy hip.

Don't be stupid.

Showed artistic talent tonight. 100% passing accuracy, whilst simultaneously creating a picture of a player trapping the ball with his left foot.

What app is that?

Winks is at the heart of a lot that we do right - and he does a huge amount of "silent" work which allows us to play the way we do.

Have a look at his movement. He is nearly always in space to receive the ball. And when he isn't, he is doing it on purpose, drawing his marker away from where he knows the team needs space.

He also has that extra half a second when he gets the ball, which means that he already knows what he wants to do with the ball when he receives it. It's clear he's an intelligent player, who has a mental picture of where players are at any given moment in the game.

Is he Zidane? Of course not. But there's a reason he has 10 England caps. He also was happy to try something else, going to Sampdoria when he didn't fit Conte's way of playing at Spurs. For me it was telling that he chose Italy to do so.

He is clearly one of the best midfielders in the Championship – if not the best. He won't be out of place in the Premier League either, if we get promoted back up, which will help our transition back to the top level.

Watched him off the ball, his head constantly moving around so he is aware of whats going on, doesnt seem to be a statue which I like.

Yeah would be ideal. Give Hamza a go in that role at Swansea.

I half thought that might happen late on Weds to miss this game but tbf he probably didn’t get the chance late on to pick one up as they never had the ball and his best chance was actually scoring and ripping his shirt off.

My Villa supporting mate messaged me last night and said how poor Tielemans has been and if we’d take him back. I said I wouldn’t swap him for Winks and even though we’re a division below, it’s clear what sort of player Winks is and how it makes teams tick. Couldn’t say the same about Youri.

Great thing about Winks, is that we know he can do it at the highest level as well. Having him in the championship is cheat mode to be honest

That one alone is a great example. We let in 60 goals that season yet a centre half won it over a striker who got 20 goals playing Mendidi Puelball. Scary hour.

He's pretty much the ideal candidate to be backup to Winks. Won't demand a start, similar style of play, won't need to overly rely on him due to having Winks (which is good for managing a return from injury). You can gradually ease him in.

Last season Maddison got 10 goals and 9 assists yet Inheacho won it with his massive 5 goals.

Assuming he has no major setbacks, I'd be shocked if Sammy isn't getting regular pitch time by March/April.

I don't think too many on here (including me) were overly excited when we signed Winks but he's been far better than I could have imagined. As others have said, he's pivotal to our system and I can't help feel we may have done a bit better against Liverpool had he played but totally understand resting him was the right call. The gulf in class is huge between prem and championship as we know but Winks is definitely one that wouldn't be out of place in the Premier league. We know he's played before at spurs but didn't get much game time recently but he's really hit the ground running here..

I think avoiding a booking was on his mind v PNE.

There was a situation 1st half where a PNE midfielder burst past him, and he could easily have brought him down but he very deliberately made a show of not making a challenge.

Previous games he has had no qualms making the tactical foul for a yellow.

I think the only reason he hasn't been close to that Spurs team is he's been very unlucky having Mourinho and Conte back to back who both want a DM or normally two in their midfield. His only option then was playing further forward which isn't his game.

Few Spurs mates of mine were v confident he'd be brilliant for us and always mention when he basically ran the show at the Bernabeu during a 1-1 draw.

Like others have said, this bloke is the glue in our team.

Winks is my favourite type of footballer and is better than I honestly thought he was.

He’s metronomic. Make space, Get the ball, pass it, make space, get the ball, pass it.. a bit of a Pirlo type player.

I used to love watching players like Steve Thompson doing this.

The one player in this side who we’d REALLY suffer from getting an injury is Winks.
