Enzo as quoted in the Athletic:

“I received a text at 11pm last night (Sunday) saying that Abdul was not going with the Ghana squad,” Maresca said. “If you ask me whether it would be better if Abdul is with the international team or here, I would tell you that it is much better for us to use him in January.

“Abdul is in the position where he’s a loan player, so we have an option in the future, but when you lose a player for a month, we probably struggle a little more to make our decision at the end. Now he has time to continue to show us how good he is and then, at the end, we are going to decide.”

The man management is astounding

I find it weird to say that. Its only like 5 games. Is Enzo saying that Fatawu picks up an injury that puts him out for 4 games that were not gonna sign him despite his obvious talent.

Again, when he says "at the end we are going to decide" i can't tell if he means January or not lol

it’s called keeping him on his toes.

A good manager will keep pushing you.

Top stuff from Enzo, no taking your foot off the gas

I was under the impression that it was an obligation if we get promoted anyway?

Looks to be untrue if he’s saying we haven’t decided yet! It does sort of look like we’re going up now.

Maresca is just pressing Fatawu and his agent in the gentlest, subtlest way.

Abdul clearly wants to be on this Premier League team (there, I said it) next year.  The feeling is surely mutual.  Now we're finding out the club's had most of the leverage, and is nudging Fatawu toward the right decisions on AFCON -- and surely a contract.

No fool is Enzo.

I think that on balance Enzo's thinking is probably fair.

Given Fatawu would be there as maybe 4 or 5th choice winger had he opted to go then it doesn't make sense for him to go. Staying here to prove himself and earn a contract with (what we all hope will be) a Premier League team next season shows that he's either got good people around him or just basic common sense.

Just not comfortable with the angle being he chose us over playing for his country as that's not the right attitude and would rightly put some players off. He chose to stay and play first team football rather than be a travel companion with the rest of the international squad, that's admirable.

If Enzo is sure he is Prem quality it makes sense to sign him permanently now to free up the third loanee slot.  I can’t see Sporting complaining.  If not then keep him on his toes.

Well my point was it’s hardly ‘keeping him on his toes’ if we have to sign him if we get promoted.

It’s not really our decision to make if the obligation is true? If we go up I mean…

I agree what Enzo has said does seem to contradict with his use of the word ‘option’.  Unless he was implying that if he had gone to AFCON he could not be sure of walking back into the team so might not make the 60%.

By keeping him on his toes I just meant that he needs to keep getting picked if he wants a contract so shouldn’t take anything for granted.

I think this is what Enzo is suggesting. That if Fatawu goes away for a month, and either he gets injured there, and/or Kasey does very well in his absence, that he might not get back in the team. If this happens, as the 60% threshold would not be met, our obligation will turn back into an option, and a decision would have to be made by the club at the end of the season as to whether we've seen enough from him in the pre-AFCON games to justify exercising our option.

The chances of that scenario actually happening, resulting in us not exercising our option/obligation, is of course really tiny. But Fatawu can't guarantee he won't get a bad injury at AFCON, plus he's seen what Maresca has done with the Daka situation and how Nacho/Vardy will probably get minimal game time for the rest of the season. I'd probably not risk it either in his shoes.

Not like he was angry with something either.

In the first half Faes had to calm him down over something. Great to have passion and all that, whilst I don’t think it’s a sending off, don’t give the ref an opportunity to send you off.

The red card was more over the top than the challenge. . You could see he was getting frustrated but he shouldn’t have given that daft tw*t of a referee a chance to card him. It was a yellow though. He is young but I can understand his frustration. He has been one of our best and most dangerous  players all season but he hardly got a pass today. He kept showing but we seemed timid to give him a run with the ball. Instead of using him we kept turning inside or passing back. I shared his frustration. We will learn from this.

Was always going to happen at some point. Crazy, in your own half, just before half and after you've just scored. Mental.

Think he's been on the edge in most games, I don't think it's angry just crazily pumped

If anyone saw his insta story this morning then you could’ve bet he would do something rash. He was clearly massively up for it today and he let that go to his head
