Are we missing a playmaker?

For me it’s a position we desperately need in the central midfield. We are crying out for a Ilias Chair , James McAtee type of player.

 

Can we bring anyone as a free agent? Or any potential names we can look at in the January transfer window?

I think not selling Ndidi and signing somebody like Chair is going to age really badly, particularly when Ndidi goes for nothing.

Yeah. The argument will be that we don’t play a traditionally creative number 10 because we have two 8s but we certainly lack a more creative 8. Hopefully one of the players can step up and it still really is  very very early days..

We have had to compromise on quality due to not being able to move on the likes of Souttar, Daka etc

I think we’re absolutely fine, we just haven’t worked out our best/strongest 11 yet. We had 11 shots from inside the area yday against a team that were packing bodies in the box and trying to encourage us to just hoof crosses and shoot from outside the box. 
 

I don’t think we’ve been as creative in the first 5 games as we’ll need to be to comfortably go up this season, but I also don’t think we’ve seen our strongest team yet. The window has only just shut after all. Casedei in for Ndidi and working out our best striker and winger options will change the way we play. For example we created lots of chances after Mavididi and Fatawu came on.

If anything Braybrooke will have more of an influence when he comes back, Winks replacement or sitting alongside as a pivot. We needed an influential #8 and we were not prepared to compromise with a potential sale in order to bring in someone of that ilk.

  As previously mentioned Ricardo on the right does not give the support that is available on the left hand side, therefore the RW is not as supported.

No…. We just need to all be patient and allow the attacking players we have time to adapt. Which as a fan base some seem incapable of doing.

We are missing the team working in unison, which is probably the " work in progress " and takes time bit. This system relies on bombardment of runners in the dual 8's and wingers. It also needs a striker that thrives in finding space in tight pockets, basically what Vardy became elite at when he turned 30/31. 

 

I'm concerned our 8's don't have the ability to take the ball forward and unlock defences, Casadei is excellent at attacking the box but so far we've not seen him on the ball creating. I actually think McAteer is the one available that could help us in that regard, he's not amazing in that field but his energy and confidence to go forward would be more of a threat than KDH or Ndidi at the minute.

 

Fatawu and Mavididi's pace together should give the 8's the impetus to join them and then the striker should be freed up to as a result.

 

We've seen scant evidence of that so far though whilst getting the squad changes. In the 7 games + pre-season we've not scored many nor really created much either. It's by and large been about as exciting as a Nicolas Cage movie. (The Rock and Con Air are class FYI but many others are beige as fcuk)

I just think we need the 8’a to take more care in possession, we were so wasteful when in good positions by making poor decisions or bad passes. I will be shocked if we don’t look to bring in a midfielder or 2 in January if KDH and Wilf don’t start stepping up. Casadei has to start moving forward, he is such an upgrade in terms of awareness and calmness in possession.

Can they though? Wilf has barely been a footballer over the last few years and KDH plays with his head firmly facing the floor

Yeah I certainly expected more from KDH but he seems to really lack that awareness that we need in that position

I don’t know if they can, but as per my comment if they can’t or don’t then they I can see us looking to bring in a couple in January. I agree with Ric, now we have plenty of winger options I can see McAteer being used in that role, I think he could be decent, I am not sure this system looks to deploy a traditional creative midfielder like a no 10 but more high 8’s that can link play with the wingers and striker but can also get into good positions to contribute with goals and assists.

I do wonder if we could shift Wilf to Turkey or Saudi Arabia whether we would consider bringing in a player like Lingard who I think would thrive in this system playing as one of the high 8’s
