I go back to my post in the PSR thread, but another danger of signing players for big money on big contracts is that when they underperform you can only move them on to PL, a handful of elite European clubs and Saudi clubs. The selling market for expensive flops is so small. How many times have we struggled to shift high earning players on? Another reason why it was suicidal to break from the model that had served us so well.

I think people's heads were turned by this.  Ritchie De Laet helped us win The Premier League.  It doesn't make him a world beater.

Is he a playmaker with an eye for a pass?  No,  not that kind of midfielder.

 

Then he must be a creative, goal scoring midfielder?  Well, no, not one of those either, he has only ever scored one goal and that was more than six years ago and he doesn't trouble himself with assists.

 

So what does he do?  Apparently he's quite good at 'progressing the ball' up the pitch.  We have seen little evidence of this, but anyway, this is not NFL.  We don't measure players in yards and anyway the best and quickest way to 'progress the ball' up the pitch is with a pass in my view.  

Even now, he has his apologists, 'pace of the league....blah, blah blah'.  Before that 'homesickness' was the reason that he was incapable of tracking a runner.

Spot on. If anyone needed a prime example of just how far we have fallen, it was getting excited by Soumare moving the ball up the pitch a bit against Ipswich to earn us a point against ten men. 

 

It isn't just him, but the lack of effort he has off the ball cost us countless amounts of times. Non negotiables is a buzz term at the minute and he doesn't do them. Any self respecting club or manager wouldn't pick him based on that alone. Sadly we've had to. He could have the talent of Kante, but if he's not willing to give everything then get rid. Same can be said for so many of them. We are the absolute pits.

People are wedded to the idea of him rather than the reality. It's why the very occasional glimpse of quality is treated as some sort of uptick.

 

He's a bad player. I can forgive signing him. I saw some logic at the time. I can't forgive him still being here - and as I said months ago, his ascent into our team was less that and more our teams descent.

Daka is nowhere near one of the worst. The signing hasn’t worked out well but he’s always tried, has scored some goals, hasn’t f ucked off at various points because he’s homesick.

 

Silva, Soumare, Ward, Vestergaard et al have all been far worse
