He was very highly regarded after his 2022/23 season at Montpellier alongside Mavididi. I wasn't aware of the baggage that surrounds him until today. It's a huge concern isn't it. I'd much rather look at Adam Hlozek.

To be fair in the account on the school incident it only says he made them strip. He says because they had been repeatedly taunting him about his dad dying when he was two and he wanted to humiliate them. Also he says that he pushed not punched the girl when they got into an argument and I'm not sure it went to court.

In terms of the football side of things, I can’t say I’m surprised that Lens are willing to let him leave. They signed him last summer for a big fee to replace Lois Openda, he came with big expectations after looking like one of the best striker talents in Ligue 1 while at Montpellier, but throughout last season he failed to live up to expectations. He had many games last season where Lens fans were really disgruntled with his performances, his finishing especially at times was abysmal. 
 

He is also the type of striker I wouldn’t really associate with holding the ball up and linking play. He is more of a poacher who relies on quick movement in the box and running in behind. 
 

Maybe his price tag at Lens weighed on him too heavily, with pressure affecting his performances. At Montpellier his finishing was arguably one of his strongest assets, while at Lens his finishing at times was very snatchy and became a weak point. 

Sounds like Daka and we know how that's turned out...

Tbh I was a bit surprised to see him linked as he is quite similar to what we already have. The question mark if we do sign him would be which version will we end up getting. The Montpellier version was one of the best young strikers in France, but if we get the Lens version, we’ll be getting very frustrated with him pretty quickly 👍🏻

I don't think "we've had players on the books in the past with awful histories" means we should go and sign some more.

 

I agree we don't necessarily have full context, but those are still two very good reasons to steer clear of him, regardless of footballing ability.

To be extremely clear, three years ago Wahi was accused of punching a woman in the face in a night club. As far as I can tell, no legal action seemed to come of it. 

 

This lead an investigative journalist in France to go and do a bit of digging on him to write an article about violence perpetrated by footballers because there had been allegations when he left Caen that he'd been kicked out for attacking a coach. 

 

To be clear, he left Caen when he was 15.

 

What the journalist allegedly discovered is that there were actually allegations that when Wahi was 14 or 15 years old he had physically threatened other school kids to masturbate in front of him in the toilets. 

 

Again, there were never any charges brought either at the time or when the article was published, let alone any conviction or civil settlement and he himself was also a child at the time of the most serious accusations. 

 

Now I'm not suggesting that makes him a nice and wholesome person and I'm not defending anything he may or may not have done. But equally, let's just be clear about what he was accused of at very least.

As someone who works with young people, I can say that kids make mistakes. We all know this, so let’s take our judgy glasses off.

 

Yes the allegation is something to be aware of, but he was a child at the time, and we have very little info about what actually happened. There is also a chance that it never happened, considering the allegation is serious, you’d have thought some further action would have been taken if true.

 

Ive worked with young people who have made poor choices, done bad things, and grown up to be completely different to what their earlier decisions would have suggested.

 

The more recent allegation…

He shouldn’t have pushed his mrs, I’m sure he knows that too. He hasn’t absolutely battered anyone - we’ve had players who have done worse.

 

He was great at Montpellier, not quite done it at Lens. I for one would fully back him if he ended up here, and honestly, I think he’s about the best we can get in terms of ability, and can play anywhere accross the front three iirc.
