What are the chances of a laptop harddisk drive that has been in the middle of a landfill site for 12 years being found, and if it is found, what are the chances of it still working?!

I understand why he’s doing it and it probably is worth the gamble, particularly with investors behind him. But some of his decisions are at best strange and at worst suspect. He wants to buy a tip that’s reaching the end of its life - I get it. But trying the sue the council? Nonsense. And now backing AI to do his legal arguments for him rather than using actual lawyers?

Perhaps this guy is actually just a bit loopy.

Seems to be bad news everywhere at present. Gives me a queasy feeling in my stomach. Looks like we’re going to get 3 years of Liberal/Nationals (read Tories) rule here in Oz with the forthcoming election. Dutton is a culture wars warrior and has a pathological hatred of renewables. He’ll use a bogus nuclear option to try to discourage investment in renewables so that his pals can mine more coal & gas. Hopefully there’s too much momentum now to slow the transition to EVs and renewables more widely.

Australia making brutal immigration and asylum laws and still having all this populism is making the “populism in the west is just about immigration” arguments look a bit weak.

Immigration was always just only one part of it.

Have to tip the hat at the successful manipulation of media, social and otherwise, to make so many folks think and act like it was just the one issue.

The basic principle of "blame the other" lies at the bottom of it. Already they are making noises about how women not having enough babies is damaging "western values". Women are the next big target.

Imagine if they hadn't provided the aid in the first place.

Is it "aid" if you pay through the nose for it?

More likely to catch something from a hypodermic than find that hard drive :-( In all seriousness, waste sites are some of the most dangerous places around. Feel for the guy; wish he could move on

And then people had the temerity to say that Project 2025 wasn't the exact, bullet-pointed objective just because Trump went on TV and lied about having anything to do with enacting it.

Tax golf. There's a policy I can get behind. And a 100% tax on the hideous golf clothes they wear.

So you don't think lend lease was vital to the UK and allies ?

It certainly was, but it's not very "matey" for a "mate" to rip you off on hardware necessary to your survival.

A sense of superiority and a poor understanding of the rest of the world are strong in Anglo-Saxon societies. Sometimes I wonder if a lot of the recent developments in those countries are just down to voters not really knowing how to deal with no longer being able to shut themselves off from the globe's problems any more.

Allies are not mates. Even Stalin admitted the Soviets could not have won without lend lease.

Poor old Tommeh is having a rough time in solitary.

I mean... He quite literally requested that he go in solitary confinement but that's not the point. He shouldn't even be in jail in the first place.

I mean... He quite literally pleaded guilty to his crime despite taking hundreds of thousands in donations for his legal defence, but that's not the point. He shouldn't even have been on trial in the first place.

I mean... He was only on trial because a judge explicitly told him he would be on trial if he screened a film repeating his baseless lies against a Syrian child refugee,  but that's not the point.

I guess what I'm getting at is that Tommy Robinson is a ****ing idiot and deserves everything he's getting.

It helped, but it wasn't aid and it wasn't altruistic. It was much closer to exploitation.

And the Marshall Plan? It doesn't need to be altruistic to be helpful.

I emphatically agree.

Perhaps with that in mind, people might reconsider the feelings of gratitude they hold at what was simply an act of cut-throat business and the actors that drove it - especially so long after the fact.
