Don't think Strand Larsen is a bad player as such but never worth £50+m and it's a real eggs in one basket signing from Palace, it has to work for that fee.. Be better off picking up a few players in the £15-25m range imo..

You're going well if 50% of transfers work, spending lots of your budget on one player is daft because transfer just are prone to failure.

 

As maligned as Chelsea and Forest's transfer business is, the more you buy the more gems you pick up. Even Liverpool who have historically got it right were happy with 50% (as per Ian Graham's book). 6 transfers at a usually unsustainable 50% gets you 3 good deals a season so buying 10 at 40% gets you ahead (provided you can sell the deadwood like Chelsea and Forest do).

 

Whereas we scarcely buy anyone and still pay too much.

You're the man to ask... I went onto fbref to check Strand Larsen's stats and I see they have had to pull the data from the site. Any decent alternatives out there?

I've been looking at Understat and FotMob which together have a lot of what you would find on fbref, as well as some stuff you wouldn't, like shot maps

It's a good fee given his form this season, which has been shite and he barely looks like he's trying half the time. 

 

He's a decent goalscorer though and a change of scenery will do him good, to get away from the sinking ship at Molineux. He's decent off the ball as well as a half decent finisher so I think he'll do alright there. He was pretty good last season and his stats back that up. 

 

£50m is still £5m less than we could have sold him for last summer to Newcastle so the fee is about right given January signings normally cost more. We obviously need the money to rebuild in the summer once we go down.

I was being slightly tongue in cheek in regards to how you'd feel about it. Still plenty of room to grow but at almost 26, £50m for a guy who has scored 1 in 20 odd PL games this season, highest career League tally of 14 goals and a 1 in 4 hit rate, is absolutely abysmal from Palace. Especially as they'll get less for Mateta and likely Strand-Larsen's value will drop in the summer as a championship player. Fantastic business from you, not that you'll probably invest all that back in the team and you lose a guy who could score you goals to give you any kind of a chance this season

Even bigger risk given the manager is off (fairly soon I reckon with their form and general mood) and the next might not necessarily be keen.

Thought i would check our top 11 depth who have played at least 900 mins 

 

If I reading it correctly it has Soumare as the 4th best “number 6” in the league

The £40m fee for Mateta isn't necessarily the issue... £50m for Strand Larsen is ridiculous. The same kind of decision making which has taken us from a strong position to the brink.
