Fair comment, though I plead guilty to any charge of pretence. My post was just addressing the charts in the article, not seeking to look at Brexit pros (?) and cons generally.

I also probably think less about freedom of movement as, through my Irish Dad, I was able to get Irish passports for myself and my daughter, so as to keep freedom of movement. Though I've not used my Irish passport yet - still used the British one, so far.

Come to think of it, there's a massive irony there: British people whose families have immigrated from other EU nations still keep freedom of movement, while "purer" Brits descended from the Normans and Anglo-Saxons don't. Though, to be fair, us Celts were here before them, anyway - our ancestors were mainly pushed across the Irish Sea by the Romans, I think?

Perhaps the only fair solution to all the national identity/immigration issues is for all of humanity to return to its roots - and go back to living up trees in the Congo, from where I believe we first descended and started walking, thereby arguably becoming the human race.

Sure, the comment was responding to the article and Brexit discourse in general, not your post.

Irish great grandparents for me. Not enough for a passport though possibly could've got me a place in the USA 94 squad...

More qualified than Tony Cascarino, certainly.

The name Wales comes from an Old English word meaning, "foreigner."

I know everything is miserable and he’s a massive leftie but I really like Mayor Mamdani.

He's certainly a far cry from a high ranking government official claiming that every single person of colour in the US is "illegal", as one Greg Bovino did recently.

I mean they all have phones and will just make up ages which probably happens now .

Yeah, can't stop the signal, and almost all of these kids are either smarter than the restrictions or will know someone who is.

All I know is it will undoubtedly come with a bunch of privacy invading horseshit via some garbage 3rd party like anthropic in the name of "saving the kids".

Would have to be a different company now that Agent Orange#47 has made all Anthropic products verboten to "foreigners", I reckon.

I mean that's not exactly what's happened is it?

And nothing stopping the UK government outsourcing it to them in any event.

No, it was overstatement borne out of exasperation towards entirely unnecessary nationalist idiocy,  I'll happily admit that.

FWIW I think you're right about the ethical concerns and I also think it simply won't be enforceable anyway, as per above, a lot of these kids are smart, and a lot of them communicate with others who are smarter.

They needed to look at smart phones and tablets for children rather than social media imo.

Doom scrolling starts with 2 year olds being addicted to dopamine hits from scrolling images and needing constant high stimulation media from a young age.

Social ban will probably do little, but if it moves towards an age ban on smart phones and tablets then it's a good thing.

This really is completely the wrong way to go about it. Regulate infinite scrolling and stuff appearing on your feed that you didn't sign up for. Oh, and educated parents that it's not ok to give a 4 year old a smart phone.

This is either completely misguided with many consequences they can't see (which loads can) or it's insidious invasions of privacy in action.

I think it's a positive step if a bit late. Kids that young don't really need social media to find out news or chat to each other.

It should have been done ages ago by the SM companies themselves though, and should have been forced to have age verification in place from a much earlier point.

They should still be allowed to have accounts on Snapchat and Instgram for example but underage accounts should be locked down to just the basics.

The only thing I will say though, is that kids will get round it if they really want to. Just like the adult verification laws bought in to stop access to pornographic sites, a simple VPN geo-browsing from a country without those laws make access pretty straightforward.

The next step is fully banning mobiles from school time across the country which has already shown positive results in certain schools in the UK.

I agree with the sentiment but the execution is horrendous and at a time when Labour desperately need a win and some popularity.

I work in retail and they all have phones with cards on to tap with etc so they are probably more technically advanced than some adults .

And presumably won’t be able to be banned from schools as parents will say their kids need them to keep in contact if something happens .
