I mean, I always quite liked him but to be fair, even at his absolute peak he only scored more than 10 league goals in a season once in his entire career and that was in the championship.

**** me I knew things were bad but I didn't realise Michael Gove was the new Technical Director.

I thought the exact same thing !!

This is true. But he was a cracking focal point. And there was no doubt his presence created goals / chances for others.  He always bullied us. So his value was never truly about goals. But what he has left in the tank is questionable.

Yeha as I say I like him. But we really need a goalscorer which he hasn’t really ever been. For what it’s worth at the right wages I’d gladly take him.

Nice to see the club investing in the potential of a 35 year old cripple

Nice

Has he signed then?

Yep. Every time the club shows some tiny green shoots of recovery (more by accident than design ) along comes another incomprehensible , panic stricken and borderline insane move by the management to stamp on it

We are not going to give him a long contract.  I’d rather have him until the end of the season and send Carranza back.

Not many out of contract 20 year old world beaters around.

The Winter window is historically difficult with prices inflated due to the desperation of the buyers. I'm not sure we kept the receipt for Carranza but we need at least one forward who can make things difficult for defenders. If Antonio is fit & apparently he's played some games for W Hams U21s as well as Jamaica in the Summer then assuming the price is right it's probably not a bad move.

This is why we need Top and Rudkin gone, the sort of signing we need to stop making.

A lot of fans seem oblivious to our circumstances as well, liking the idea of it.

We’ve got two really sh1t strikers and a 17 year old rookie. Two of which have never scored a goal for the first team. We have spent zero £££ in transfer fees with no indication that will change. We need to find somebody for no transfer fee, wages we can afford and who doesn’t have better offers than a mid-table Championship club in decline.

It might be precisely because fans are acutely aware of our circumstances that they’re not dismissing a potential recruit that, in different circumstances, might make no sense at all

What annoys me about these deals is that they can end up costing you just as much as that diamond in the rough.

If you take a punt on someone who’s doing well in a lower or foreign league with a higher potential, then the wages are far less to what a free agent with a profile will be asking for.  This again, is laziness because the outlay won’t be a great deal less than if we’d paid for Kone in the summer.

*fwiw I don’t know how signing bonuses are reflected in psr but my point stands

QPR signed Kone for £5m + wages

Surely you don’t think we’re spending more than that on Antonio!?

“Diamond in the rough” is probably what we were hoping to get from Carranza. I’m not sure you do many of those kind of deals in January as clubs would be very reluctant to let players go. Not sure the value would be there, but you might get lucky.

Interestingly Kone’s output this season (games/goals/assists) is identical to that of Jordan Ayew, although Ayew has scored 2 of his 4 goals in penalties, which might suggest Kone is more effective in open play. FWIW I’d rather have Kone than our other current options, but I’m not sure he’s the great hope he’s sometimes made out to be for the money paid

This seasons Edouard moment in the making.

Absolutely smashing it this season, with top of the table Lens!

A goal every two games.

Scored a brace at the weekend

Good old Ruud. Brilliant manager. That's on him I'm afraid

The problem is, yes.   He would have been on close to 100k at west ham and i think injury or not, his agent will be looking at how much we payed jamie vardy at his age and be thinking he can push for a high amount.  Even with the injury, if hes training and proves himself fit and healthy, his agent will be coming in at 40-50k at the lowest.  ( probably more if the wages we have on our books are to be believed) and then there would likely be a sign on fee worth a couple of mill.

Theres no such thing as free transfer in football, the money just goes into someone elses hands
