Not including Nelson in this as he's young and new; possibly Okoli too. But how many of our defenders over the last few years have given off the vibe that they actually enjoy the job of defending?

Vesty and Faes always seem like they only really want to be in possession. That keeping clean sheets is the secondary element of their job.

Lascelles has some flaws, but he's always seemed like the guy who wants to take on a big number 9 and gets real pride from a clean sheet.

Happy to have him.

Championship should be a walk in the park for him - won’t stress his body anywhere near like the prem cos in regards to the quality and speed of attackers - have a very good feeling this one is exactly what we needed

we could easily go 3-5-2 rest of season or the enzo formation depending who comes in as gaffer - options of winks , skipp , aribo and the 2 new young lads instead of hamza and Ayew is music to my ears - we will be ok if the new gaffer has half a brain

Definitely a risk worth taking. Newcastle fans won't say a bad word about him, and he was one of the few players who showed up for them when they were in the doldrums.

Hopefully he can stay fit, because he'll walk into the side, and the type of player who can hopefully drag performances out of those alongside him.

We’ve lost a load of leadership really from the point of Schmeichel leaving which was never replaced, he certainly seems to have the right attitude. Hopefully this points to more value being placed on the character of the player the club is going after. A lot of the arrogant wasters leaving hopefully means I’ll have some affinity with the players again soon!

An actual sensible structured deal by the club, rare.

He brings attributes that we desperately need in defence, a sensible stopgap until the end of the season, then we can reassess our leadership group in the summer.

Now let’s just hope he can stay fit 🤞🏻

He’s primarily right footed. Does this suggest he’s got his eye on Vesty’s place?

Hopefully and then we can get rid of the walking football, passing out the back after inviting pressure and the high line.

We really need a fresh perspective and someone to speak up and tell the painful yet obvious truth about the issues in defence and the positioning.

Has to be Lascelles and Nelson, makes too much sense, Nelson was better at Oxford with an experienced head next to him who lead the line, we don’t have anyone doing that atm, just have to pray he stays fit

I do think 3 centre backs suits the characteristics of the squad better than the 4-2-3-1 we’ve been playing. That or a 4-3-3 with two 8s given the players we’ve brought in.

"a guy who won't stand for half arsed bs, especially from his teammates. Called out everyone in the team and dragged us back kicking and screaming. He's a leader, strong and a wall, a legend."

Inject it

Hopefully he can form a good partnership with Nelson who I think could benefit from someone like this next to him.

Yeah he needs leadership and guidance. I feel he was a better defender when his style was more solid basics and passing quickly to Skipp.  As soon as replaced JV he started to play exactly the same, boring and risky at the expense of his teammates.

He can pass and can run but is pointless if the whole team is static in front. We need our CBs to be defenders not CMs to get caught out on the halfway line.

I hope his first game is in the FA Cup after playing for the u21's again Norwich. There's no point whatsoever throwing him straight into Brum or Saints league games.

In fact i'd like to see Aribo and Richards in that Monday night game as well. Especially as Aribo can't play Tuesday or Saturday after.

I suppose we're in a position where we need to take this kind of risk to get the quality we need. Obviously the fact he's played 19 mins of first team football since April 2024 is a major concern.

Sounds like a the kind of leader we need in the group though, like a proper leader as well, not just a banter merchant.

If he can stay fit it could be a tremendous bit of business. If he's in the physios room by mid Feb though then it'll be no impact and us likely paying a guy to get treatment for 3/4 months.

On balance I don't mind the risk as the positives outweigh the negatives. Slightly depressing that this is the pond we're fishing in now though.

Best of luck though to Jamaal, hopefully another cult hero is born.
