Someone posted this damming stat in the match thread (below).   I think it warrants a closer look. 

 

At first glance, you might think it shows, what many of us suspect and that is that these players don't care and they're not trying. 

 

It might also mean that we're a team of geriatrics (Ayew, Ricardo, Vestergaard, Reid...) 

 

Or it simply an indictment of our turgid sideways, always playing in front of teams, before turning back on ourselves, no one breaking lines, no one running from deep, wingers turning back on themselves? 

 

Or a combination of all three?

Let's get real here.  Some people will say statistics don't matter and for sure, some can be a little anomalous, but when they are presented here, together, it tells a damning story.

 

These stats are basically "how do the players compare to their peers from other clubs".

 

The really frustrating thing is that pretty much all of those stats can be rectified with some basic effort and application.  They can be grouped together and categorised as "The Basics".

 

A multitude of managers that have been through Seagrave in recent seasons must know, as every football fan knows, that you have to get the basics right.  That's your platform, that's your foundation.  Get the basics right and build from there, but the basics of running (quickly at times) and not giving the ball away, are non-negotiable.

 

This isn't a new thing.  Manager after manager has overseen this lack of effort.  Do we even have a fitness coach?

 

The problems with this squad run deeper.  The culture at the club (set by the senior leadership) must be one of chill out, relax, enjoy yourself and count your money.  It isn't one that sets out it is a privilege to be a professional footballer and a privilege to play for Leicester and train at one of the best training grounds around and that 100% effort and attention are required 100% of the time or we will find someone who will deliver that.

 

The whole club is moronic. Getting back to the Premier League could take decades unless someone slams the brakes on immediately and starts fixing everything that's wrong.

Just shows how little the players give a shit. This isn't just down a lack of quality and tactics, this is down to a sheer lack of effort and discipline. Those are some seriously disgraceful stats.

Maybe that’s the issue though. Because they believe they are good players at this level, they don’t feel like they have to put in the effort that some other teams do. What’s the saying though; ‘hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard’.

It does make you wonder why no manager has bluntly put it to them that the primary reason for their decline is their lack of willingness to do their jobs. It's been the most obvious conclusion to draw for a long time. Yet it feels as if every managerial appointment, and every decision made by said appointee, has been made without awareness that sheer laziness, entitlement, incompetence - on a crazy scale - is the main reason for us being where we are. The eye test tells us that. And, it turns out, the facts emphatically agree. To a comical extent.

 

I'll ignore, for a moment, the obvious observation that only a club's owners can be responsible for contracting so many incompetent bosses on the bounce. It's almost as if these managers are given the job with a clear, unattainable agenda to pacify and placate a bunch of individuals of very, very limited professional merit. Technically nice players who have had a lovely year in their five star hotel / training spa....whatever you call Seagrave. But can't bring themselves to do their jobs.

 

For anyone who questions the right of these people to earn these sorts of pay packets, Leicester City must be proof, of historical proportions, that there are many people on 'elite' wages without the level of professionalism to match. There are hundreds of lower league and non-league players looking at Mavididi's stats (assists / goals / running) and rightly saying 'given those opportunities, I'd do better'. You and I have played with people who would have done better too.

 

Now if you ever hear Mavididi speak, you understand fully why this is. He's a born loser, clearly, obviously, if ever there was one. And that should have been spotted way back in 2023. But he's not the only one. We've accumulated players (and occasionally technically decent ones, like Fatawu and Winks) who embody the characteristics which guarantee failure. The easiest thing is to call them what they are - born failures. Characters who make success very unlikely, in spite of their flashes of quality.

 

As others have asked, has there ever been a side in any division with the biggest wage budget which ended up relegated? The career-defining event for nearly all of these players will be that they managed to suffer back to back relegations with a major footballing force. That will eclipse anything else that has happened in Reid's / Ayew's / Winks' / Pereira's / Mavididi's / Vestergard's / Fatawu's careers. It's what they'll be remembered for. And good. They deserve to be remembered as utter ****s. The lot. They can tell their grandkids how horrendously **** they were.

 

They may have nice houses and cars, but their place in history is something which no amount of money will ever erase. They are losers of historical proportions. And by god, I've never had such a black, demonic, vile, evil, virulent feeling towards a set of human beings as I have towards these players. You couldn't get any lower. I wish them long and healthy lives, but their disservice to this club, and the game, should haunt them for the rest of their days.

Lazy bastards, every single one of them. You can be shit, but to get paid 5 figures a week and you can’t be arsed to run is unforgivable. 
 

There should be performance clauses where wages are deducted for lack of effort, measured on stats like these.

The stats are damning. It is a reflection of the bad team organisation and mentality we have.

 

We have some good players and any team in the Championship would be happy to have one of them let alone multiples of them.

 

But we have some really poor performers and poor team organisation that ruins it.

 

The worst is that we always have players that tend to slow down play, play backwards or lump it forward aimlessly. Football is about those moments in transition, which we often miss because of these elements. We have a few bad actors: Thomas, Hamza to name two. The manager should tell them to give it a go and not wait. The manager should organise the team much better.

 

The biggest downfall is we always let the opposition team settle back into their shape before attacking. Instead of quick throw-ins, we always have Thomas and Ricardo run all the way from afar to take them when a quick throw-in would be much better (only for us to be put under pressure for a quick hoofing up after the opposition has set themselves up). Instead of quick transitions, when the ball gets to Hamza, he passes it back (he lacks skills and confidence)). As a result, we then have to work in predictable ways to try to break teams down. But we are not Man City (we have good players but they are not that good). The stats show this approach does not work. This to me is the biggest frustration.

 

For a club like ours with the money invested and the players we have, say all you like, but we should never be below many of the teams that are in the Championship. Look at Coventry. If that team is managed by the Leicester hierarchy, they would surely be relegated. They always play with purpose in a coherent manner. We are just a random bunch of well paid players without positive organisation.

 

This is a catastrophic failure in management of our club, and this starts from the very top.

Their greedy little agents wouldn't allow for that to be put into the contracts. 

 

I've been saying for years we need to move to performance based with a modest basic wage (it'd still have been good money on basic). If a player doesn't back themselves enough to think they can earn more through performance, they can F off.

It is not an exaggeration to say that any other club in the country, including non-league, would have sacked Jon Rudkin long ago. Top is literally the only chairman that would reward that level of failure with a promotion. Any organisation that has no accountability will eventually be overcome by apathy and inertia at all levels. Those stats show just how far along that process we are.

It is nice to see all those damning stats in black and white - or red and white in this case - but it’s not exactly a surprise, is it?

 

It’s what we’ve been seeing with our own eyes - and complaining about - all season.

 

This group of players is the laziest, most complacent, least likeable and least supportable Leicester City side of all time.

 

Shame on the club’s ownership and management for not just being blind to it but continuously indulging the spoilt brats.
