I guess the only caveat to that is Matty James dropped to that level and got himself back on track. Would only take him if there were other strikers there too.

But I agree with the risks, Aaron Ramsey looked a player, but was a waste of a loan.

With Matty James though, it took around 5 years for him to finally put his injury problems behind him, it could be the case with Adebayo.

On the other hand, Fatawu played 40+ games last season after an ACL, so you never really know how a player is going to react but a hip injury immediately after an ACL isn't a good sign.

What happened to that geezer from Borehamwood? We were linked with him around the play off final and it doesn't look like he's moved

Abdul Abdulmalik. He looks a fantastic prospect. Should throw a mil at getting him

What do we think the percentage chance of us signing a young hungry striker that can actually score goals is? We have been crying out for it for the last 5 years and it hasn't happened yet and a big reason why we were relegated twice. Im going with about a 10% chance

I don't think we have any money, it'll have to be a free or a loan. When I say don't have any money, for the type of players we scout. Not a chance this current lot know how to identify players across the world that could be signed for a million or less.

We got one from Red Bull Salzburg. That’s our one for the decade, now it’s whatever out of favour striker Rudkin packs in Ultimate Team this year on an emergency deadline day loan.

It’s weird to think only a decade ago we were spaffing 30 million quid on bench-warmers like Islam Slimani, now we’re struggling to sign arthritic no hopers like Danny Ings on a free.

nothing humbled you like football, I guess.

Like Adelaide’s Luka Jovanovic who’s just gone to the San Jose Earthquakes for around £500k.

I’d say it’s unlikely we will be throwing a million quid on someone from non league at the minute.

He looked decent from the limited time I saw him but looking at his stats, I’d say it’s even less likely.

Have we not brought in 40-50 m surely we could reinvest at least 15 m of that?

I wouldn’t be surprised if at least 4 players we bring in will be on loans, premier league club managers will want to see their own lads in pre-season. Loans will gain momentum in the next week or two.

that £50m in for Monga, Elk and Fatawu basically prevents us going bust for 1 year. it doesnt enable us to sign players.

I agree, those sales gives us roughly £10m after we've paid for the training ground, academy and womens side for the year ( reported as £40m cost to us last season) which would likely be used on wages to bring in frees and loans. We have to remember we have to adjust to League one FFP rules which is considerably lower than the Championship.

Yes we still have some considerable earners to offload too and given the work already done, we won't be doing so on the cheap.

I honestly don’t mind us spending very little and focusing on the free-transfer and loan markets. If we do go down the loan route, though, I’d like any deals to include an option to buy.

I think we already have a really good group of academy players in Alves, Braybrooke, Aluko, Joseph, and a few others who are ready to blossom in League One. With a few smart free signings, such as Chaplin, to support them, along with a handful of well-placed loan signings, we could have a very competitive squad capable of getting us back into the Championship.

I don’t get the desperation for us to spend a lot of money. I’d rather see us build smartly, trust our academy players, and recruit wisely than throw money around for the sake of it. Hopefully JM can shake up the scouting department and shift the focus towards identifying players valued at £1 million or less who have the potential to develop and significantly increase in value.

Whatever we do, we need to get back to developing players into saleable assets. That approach has worked well for us in the past and is something the club should be prioritising again.

My biggest concern is the future. I also don't mind this route as long as there's not still major work each year just to survive because our operating costs far outweigh our revenue. If we don't go up immediately and we lose the parachute payments and have to raise similar levels of sales then it's just not realistic when your squad is made up of frees, loans and the academy.

It puts huge pressure on those academy players to perform and their value to rocket and some of that it outside of our control as there'll come a point we aren't in a strong position to command £12m for an academy player at League One level.

None of this necessarily gets solved by spending £10-15m this summer either but with the right recruitment network that can find serious value for money then we may compliment the brilliant academy we have and safeguard this club a little.

I agree that if we are going to spend money, it should be on finding those £400k–£500k gems that can be developed and polished into valuable assets. We need to start rebuilding the value of the squad, and that's going to take time and patience. At the same time, the club needs to be sensible financially by trimming costs where possible and continuing to grow its non-football income streams to create a more sustainable model for the future.

One of the reasons I’m warming to Martin is that I think he could be very good at developing players and implementing a style of play that makes our players attractive to other clubs. If we can improve young talent, play positive football, and create a clear pathway for development, we’ll not only become more competitive on the pitch but also increase the value of the squad. That has to be a key part of the club’s long-term strategy.

I think we’ve gone all in on McCarron, and he’s going to be a key factor in whether this approach succeeds or fails.

A bit worrying there aren't any rumours. That said, the McCarthy signing came out of the blue a little bit, didn't it?

Probably have to be quite under wraps when it comes to free transfers to avoid competition. Particularly when we are shopping for players that could probably do a job in the Championship.
