They've got a whole tournament to get through, in pretty hot climates, with more teams, and can easily win the group even dropping some points.

Teams that go full gas for the whole tournament will run out of steam.

Games like this are rarely entertaining other than for a bit of schadenfreude. Cape Verde are such massive underdogs that the best they can do is park the bus and hope and nobody is going to fault them for that but it's not gonna make the game exciting is it? Spain will get the criticism but there's not really any style of play that's good to watch when your opponent refuse to engage at all and just bet it all on their keeper.

It's like a cup tie. Like a non-league team going away to Anfield.

They generally are entertaining when there isn't an early goal for the favourite. The longer it stays level, the more tense it gets.

Of course, normally the big team eventually finds their goal but it's hard to say it's not entertaining to watch the European Champions on the ropes against a tiny island like this.

Cape Verde sitting deep explains why it’s hard to break them down, but it doesn’t fully excuse Spain moving the ball slowly, lacking sharpness, and not creating enough clear chances. You can manage energy across a tournament and still play with more tempo than this. Especially with the roof closed, you would want the 3 points here that is for sure

I remember as a kid seeing a picture of Cape Verde playing in a qualifier for the 2002 World Cup and thinking how cool it was that some tiny nation was trying to qualify for something that they will never make, a bit like Loughborough Dynamo trying to make it to the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Seeing them play in the World Cup proper will be a weirdly proud moment, despite having no connection to the place.

Go on Cape Verde! Incredible achievement.
