Give him 3 months before the fickle fans will want change, again.

If he serves up something decent there will be no problem. There is nothing fickle about not wanting to watch uninspiring, directionless shite, which has been served up by the last 3/4 managers.

Problem is, he will need significant backing to even stand a chance, what will happen, is exactly what happened last season, nothing…… so his plan will fall on its arse from day one.

People saying ‘who would you get who’s better’ are completely missing the point.

It’s not about names, it’s about what seems like the right fit. People would prefer a ‘lesser’ name like Challinor who would be likely to bring a more exciting style of play and results that a big name failure who no doubt thinks he is above us and the league we are in due to his ego.

If he truly thinks he's above us and the league we are in then it seems strange that he signed a contract.

Think it's time to just accept where we are and who with and try and move on in the hope we all start enjoying the match day experience again. Ideally with the way we play and the results.

He’s signed the contract because his career is hanging by a thread…. He’s signed the contract because we’ve likely offered him a bigger salary than he’s had elsewhere.

Why should we wait that long?

Sadly I feel almost forced to get behind him, because Russell Martin and his players are the only thing now standing between us and financial oblivion, I might have to just suck up for a season and focus purely on results, even if it does bore me to sleep.
I know I won't stick to this and I'll be slating the slow, laborious gameplay about 3 matches in, but we can only hope.

what is forcing you?

You mean those of us who believe the club could have done much better than this appointment?

Such a strange argument as well because his win % is atrocious, it's not like he's some sort of coup and we don't like him because of his tactics. Any manager who has had moderate success in the last 4 years, in any league, would have done me.

It's not an inspiring choice and he wouldn't have been my pick, but it makes sense in terms of the possession based footballing style the club clearly favour. I think it's the wrong strategy because football has moved on from the era of dominating possession for the sake of it. But it makes far more sense as an appointment than Cooper or Cifuentes. I was one of the ones who was critical of Maresca's tactics but I've learnt to be careful what you wish for so if it's dull to watch but effective then so be it, we just need to get out of this league this season

I want change now. Don't want Soy Hodgson, never did. Mans failure at rangers should have been the end of his managerial career

I am wondering about the narrative here. I get the impression from some sources that there was no other prospect than Martin, but on the other hand others are reporting that Jack Wilshire turned us down. If the latter is true then we were looking at progressive young managers.

Did anyone listen to the RL podcast?

the journalist Nick Mashiter made reference to a number of interested managers backing off due to a lack of autonomy. Felt like RL took that to be a positive sign of the DOF having control but I heard it the potential managers felt Rudkin was going to continue calling shots

It isn't about a coup or a big name (which is debatable with Martin anyway). It is about finding the right fit with what we have and what we might bring in.

He will either have to bring in virtually a whole new first team or spend the summer training the players into playing his style. So he will either be frustrated that he cannot do the former and the players cannot do the latter.

Strikes me, yet again, of a club trying to look effective and not being.

I don't think they're at all concerned about optics. It's more Rudkin or Top think Martin is the bees knees because they like possession obsessives and he's the most extreme example.

There is no process, no shortlists, no whittling down, All they know is going back for the same targets like with Potter and Maresca. They've got their man, if/when we sack Martin they'll be at a loss.

I tend to agree. When Enzo took over he spent the pre-season drilling the team into his style of play, but he was dealing with ex Premiership players with good technical ability - Vardy, KDH, Winks, Ricardo, Vestergaard, Praet, Iheanacho as well as bringing in Hermanson, Mavadidi, Fatawu and Doyle who all complemented the system. Martin will be working with a completely different bunch of professionals who may not have the technical ability to play the style he wishes and therefore he'll need to bring in numerous players to compliment his system of play. We all know that promises made at board level regarding the transfer kitty available are rarely adhered to.

Because his reputation is in the bin. If he was at all humble or willing to learn he’d adapt his ways.

And I know where we are. I have been clear I think promotion this coming season is not realistic and we need to just halt the decline. So I’d have rather get someone of a lesser name who could focus more on substance over style and make us hard to beat.

Again, you refer to enjoying the experience. How many Rangers or Southampton fans will not laugh in your face at the suggestion Martin will offer that?
