If they do it, it means something like 60-70% of the countries under FIFA would qualify for the tournament.

8 week tournament at least too? 2034 in Saudi Arabia would have to start around Halloween to be done in time for Christmas 🤣

That is the point.  They want football bigger and bigger.  More teams, more games more money.  They care little about the quality to be honest, and then they can point out that the best teams get to the end anyway.

All to make money from sponsorship deals.

FIFA won’t care if there are mis matches or players so knackered that they can hardly move .

Diluting the product for their own gains .

It’s a struggle to see how you can play domestic league and cups in their current forms alongside a ~2 month long World Cup…

that said, I don’t mind the format if you ignore all the other problems… you could just have 16 groups and only 2 go through in each group, so each team would still have the same number of games, it would just take longer overall to complete

I'd be fine with this if it went straight to knockout games with no groups.

Expanding to 64 doesnt change an awful lot. 4 extra groups but only the top 2 qualify and a 32 team knockout like this year. Might even make groups better with more jeopardy.

Assuming they go back to two progressing it adds 24 extra games over the current format, but compared to what we had before both are extremely bloated. This year there were more 9 more group games than total matches in the old format. 64 teams would be double what was played before...

32 teams, 8 groups played 48 group games and 15 knockout games - 63 games

48 teams, 12 groups play 72 group games and 31 knockout games  - 103 games

64 teams, 16 groups play 96 group games and 31 knockout games - 127 games.

16th group would also be Group P. I can't get my head around that.

Argentina and VAR: A curious World Cup stat
There were 48 teams in this World Cup.
Only one of them never received a VAR intervention against them.
Not for a possible penalty, not for a possible red card, not for a yellow, or any other action that could have gone against them.
That team is Argentina. 🇦🇷
With all the controversy around refereeing this tournament, this stat is getting a lot of attention.

2038 Fifa World Cup on Mars!

That checks out. Martians have a terrible extraterrestrial rights record. They're using a lot of Jovian forced labour to build their infrastructure.

And Argentina will still get VAR and have 2 teams in the tournament with both facing each other in the final.

Jude Bellingham still at number 10 and 3 lions played still

BBC and ITV already said they won’t show it .

Excellent. I'm glad the UK channels are boycotting it.

Absolute farce! This is football, not some sort of concert or powerball NFL sack of pointless turd. This is a real sport.

God I hope fart face doesn't show up!

The ‘Bronze Medal Game’…

Surely goals in this don’t count towards the golden boot, imagine a player winning the golden boot in a dead rubber that nobody except the suits wants.
