I think they will be fine. I think the next 3 years looks something like this at best:-

Year 1 - promotion 

Year 2 - mid-table obscurity, no muss, no fuss

Year 3 - pushing for play-offs

 

These two are good enough for the first two years, maybe squad players in the last.

Crux of it for me n all. Don't actually have any doubt he'll be fine at this level but we won't structure this deal at all well, we just don't have form for it. He's not dropping two divisions to earn a modest pay packet

The thing is that parachute payments run out next season so players on high wages will be an even bigger problem. I was also convinced that players like Reid, Ayew and Skipp would be too good a level down and well we all saw what happened. 
 

For that reason for a player like this I’d prefer a loan only maybe with a small loan fee.

Increasingly seems like the deal for BCDR. He’s dropping down at his age and injury record as I imagine that we’ve offered him a longer contract than Ipswich were prepared to offer

On transfer fees? It was £81m on the last accounts, allow £45m incoming this financial year plus we've further added to it, so anywhere in region of £40m to £50m as it stands.

I think both have enough quality to sustain promotion challenges in both L1 and the Championship. Beyond that they may struggle, but I'll happily see them sidelined for 1 year drawing down a wage as a bit part player if they help us get back to the PL.

 

It's important to remember that both played key roles in getting Ipswich promoted to the PL in 23/24, and Burns did so again last season.

 

Similar to Cullen, I think these signings will be really important in terms of what they bring from an attitude/work ethic perspective, which is something we have struggled with hugely the past few seasons.

But Chaplin and Burns have both proven to be highly successful at L1 level. Sometimes I think players respond well to who manages them (I know that shouldn't be the case, but when I've worked with poor leaders it demotivated me). Look at Winks, very good under Maresca, poor under subsequent managers.

I did say admit it's not entirely common these days but there's a bit more behind the underlying '18 games'. He missed a good six/seven games at the end of the season.

Take a look at their combined stats, the last time they played in League one together, and their combined stats for the two surrounding seasons together, for that matter.

Phenomenal scoring and assists combined tbf.

Lets hope they can recrate that for us.

Personally if you have to sign a 2nd player to get the best out the 1st player you signed....don't think that's great logic or a good deal.

You've misunderstood me...ones got resale potential....the other one at polar opposite age is just gonna eat up wages and squad space in a year...not forward thinking!

It is if the 2nd player is a decent player in his own right. Both are great signings for a League 1 club.

I completely understand that three of the last four years (and even part of the other year) were completely toxic, miserable and we're fed up of it. We're probably going to win more games than we lose this season. People want to be positive. I get that.

 

But some of the stuff I read on here about this sort of signing. Rudkin gets universally bashed but all of a sudden if we pay up a solid Championship level deal, in League One, for an ageing player who was pretty pace reliant, who has since had a bad injury, that isn't just something to shrug our shoulders at is it surely?

 

I remember the first time we got relegated and it was out with the toxicity of Tielemans, Maddison etc... whoever and in with the humble, good lads Coady and Winks.

 

Like I said above, if this is a loan, or a reasonable, one year deal - fair enough. But if we tie ourselves into yet another risky deal, all on the premise of "we have to do this to get out of the league" (not true, didn't see Lincoln or Cardiff doing this over and over again), to then hypothetically be promoted, still in the shit financially, still needing an overhaul, where the same sort of thing will be trotted out for the latest version of this sort of signing.

 

This isn't negativity for negativity's sake even though it feels like it. Even though we are scarred. I'm just not willing to overlook it in this position. Overlooking these sorts of things are why we're in this position in the first place. I'm being ultra picky and have good reason to.

Reid was 31 when he signed for us. Ayew was 32.

Fair enough. I genuinely, and deliberately try to stay out of the financial side of transfer debates, as it is all conjecture, as we (as simple fans) just do not know true values and figures. We get to hear things, obviously, but we don't actually know.
