How Was Your Day?

Spot on. Candidate experience is the absolute go to buzz phrase at the moment but it’s vital, especially in the software industry - tech is the same, projects are similar, benefits packages are the same, salaries are there or thereabouts, so how can companies stand out? Start retaining staff at interview process, whether successful or not. Even if a candidate has been unsuccessful for a job, if they’ve had a pleasant interview experience and felt like they were treated as a person throughout the process, they might tell people they know who are looking for work to apply for the company in the future, or they’ll come back when they’ve gained more experience etc.

All companies should be continuously reviewing their hiring process and always taking feedback from successful and unsuccessful applicants, I still don’t think it’s taken seriously enough across the board, which is a shame because everyone at one point or another will be looking for a job.

I wish that this would become commonplace.  During my working life I held some managerial roles and had to go through HR to obtain new hires for my team.  HR did a good job in getting the job requirements from me and advertising in the right areas but I had some frustrations with their processes.

My first concern was that someone in HR would do a review of applicants and eliminate those they did not consider suitable for the job; this was done with the best intentions but there is a limit to how effective the process can be when the reviewer is not an expert in the position to be filled therefore cannot always spot potential for development into the role from the attributes reviewed.  In my final management role I insisted on reviewing all applications myself.  On one occasion I hired someone whom HR insisted did not fit the criteria for the position but I saw potential in the person concerned and after appointment he proved more than capable, in fact I promoted him after only a year.

HR would provide me with a shortlist of applicants they thought may be suitable and from that I would decide who to invite for interview.  I found that it was this particular HRs procedures not to inform unsuccessful applicants until after the position had been filled.  This could potentially leave applicants waiting to hear the outcome for weeks or maybe months before being advised that they had been unsuccessful.  I saw no point in this as I was not going to hire someone without sufficient knowledge or aptitude but that was their system.  I suspect other HR departments have similar systems.  This process is probably in the best interest of the hiring company but did not treat the applicants as I would wish to be treated myself.

tbh, you don't want to work for a company who can't be arsed to follow up their recruitment process correctly.

If they haven't got the common courtesy to say you've been unsuccessful and why, it says a lot about their culture.

Fvck em, there's plenty of good businesses out there who do take the time to give feedback and get back to your promptly. They're the types of business you want to work for.

Your usual, excellent post mate

👍

Step-daughter and her boyfriend (who we've let live here during covid) set off for Hunstanton this afternoon, so they could "watch the sun set over the sea".

Didn't bother telling them that they'll be looking east, when the sun sets in the west.

Some lessons are best learnt for themselves.

Morons lol

Do you think they'll notice?

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you can see the sunset at Hunstanton as it's the East coasts only west-facing resort:

It's quite fascinating actually and must be a bit of a geographical anomaly.

Great for a pub quiz question! I'll do some reading on it later.

The stay local rule has gone, I know a few people have had days out at the seaside.

I’d definitely say moist is a much better word than sleet ..  one means cold snowy rain ..  and the other means ..  well ..  something else ..

My armpits get quite moist as do my palms when watching LCFC. Occasionally my groin also depending on their performance. Today I was quite dry in all areas
