-7 overnight. ****ing praying my phone rings in the morning to say don't bother coming to work

:)

Take it easy, I just dropped someone off at the station and the back roads coming into the city are lethal. Not often I say that having regularly driven in a Canadian winter, but I nearly had someone rear end the car and the untreated roads are horrendous. Be very careful.

Roads are horrific. Came up from Sudbury to my parents this evening, got a lot of black ice by kibworth. ****ing terrifying to be fishtailing, just about have it under control and hit another patch to start fishtailing again.

Ice on our local untreated roads cost me £400.

Turned from a slushy main road into ours on Sunday evening (it was a necessary journey) and hit ice at a fairly low speed. Our road at this junction slopes away to the right a little and the car just went. Forget ABS and anti-skid protection, there was nothing I could do. The front off-side wheel hit the kerb with some force and subsequently my steering was way out of line.

I thought I'd shifted the tracking so took it to the tyre place yesterday, they checked it and it turns out both lower suspension arms on the driver side were bent. 400 sodding pounds FFS!!!!

A postscript to this: Driving on the M69 yesterday and there's a bang from the front wheel (the one that hit the kerb two weeks ago), followed by a loss of power steering, ABS, ESP, cruise control. The car then handled like a bag of porridge with spongy brakes and I had to stop. Nothing was obvious so I drove on home slowly, with a grinding noise from the front wheel. I assumed that the wheel bearing had given up. I took it straight to the workshop and they looked it over. Wheel bearing disintegrated, brake disc bent, brake pads and mounts displaced, alloy wheel buckled, wheel speed/angle sensors also affected.

The additional cost?... £766!!

A relatively minor incident has cost me over £1300. :nigel:

Ruined my fecking Christmas. What makes it worse is, I'm a trained blue light driver, I've had skid control training and yet I still ****ed up.

No snow for me - only 1 day in the last 10 years in Soulac but this afternoon we have Carmen hitting the coast - 130km/h gusts which in themselves arrive 2 or 3 times a year. The big problem today is the high tide coefficient (about 100) which will probably see the coastline eroded and possibly some coastal resorts flooded. Hopefully not Soulac as we're on the seafront but it's possible.

My fear is that electricity/internet will go down before the match and I'll be unable to watch the game live (not as in I'll be dead but I guess you understood that).

Bloody snow !! ...   that lot that came down at night on Boxing day did loadsa damage ...  the weight of it plus the wind that night ripped some big limbs off of about 15 trees in our garden and the little wood behind.   Then when it melted the paths turned to streams and the 'pond' in the wood behind turned into a lake.   Been busy on the chain saw all morning and only one tree sorted !
