Nugent and Penalties

Recommended Posts

I watched Nuge's interview on player, he mentions that he has never taken a penalty during his professional career (he has neve scored a hattrick either - linked?), he mentions that he would take one, but he tends to walk to take it..where others "run".

Im surprised that a striker isnt the first to try and grab the obvious goalscoring opportunity, does it say something about his confidence or is it something else?

He is probably just useless at them.

Look at it like this. In all professions, no matter how good you are at what you do, there will be areas of your job you don't like doing. This might just be a lack of confidence or it may be that you're genuinely not very good at that particular task. It doesn't mean you aren't good at your job. Nugent obviously has a problem with penalties for whatever reason. I don't think this says anything about his confidence as a goal scorer.

Some people are just like that with pressure. When I played Rugby I had no problem kicking in training and was great at it. Hated kicking in matches though, too much going through your head.

They're all professional footballers who can kick a ball pretty accurately but if it was a simple as that everybody would be great at penalties.

Maybe he's just always been in a team that has a very good penalty taker ie; gally. He's a good technician though so I think he'd be a decent penalty taker

Some player's are like this. Nugent indicated it was about the team first and not him. I would have thought Beckford would have taken it, but Danns must have been confident because he went straight for the ball. I have a few Steven Gerrard DVDs, and even he said he doesn't like taking them because he doesn't think he is that good at them. So, I suppose it's about confidence in yourself along with the pressure of scoring, especially if we are loosing.

I wouldn't fancy taking penno's. I'd avoid if I could. If we were 4-0 up in stoppage time, if probably have a go then.

Yeah, that would be me as well lol

I'm surprised Beckford didn't take it, I'm sure he took penalties for Everton last season. Wasn't it him who ripped one in in front of the Kop at Anfield last season?

He's just been quoted as saying he wants 20 goals for the season. Taking pens would give him a better chance of that, so I'm surprised he doesn't want to take them.

Think it should have been Beck's - if anyone need the confidence it's him. Unfortunately after Gally not sure who is next in line. Danns wanted it badly on Sat so fair play (even if it was just for a spitter2 plug).

It's a shame he doesn't take penalties as he would be pushing 20 goals already this season, assuming he scored them all of course, anyone know if he is the leading goalscorer in the league if you discount penalties?

Danns took penalties for Palace didn't he? So not suprised he took it.

It was but that wasn't a penalty. Leighton Baines took those for Everton last season.

No presure in open play as you don't get time to think about it like you do with a penno.

If I was a keeper I would want my players in the box and pissing about as long as possible delaying it.

Open play it's pick ya spot n hit it you got a second to think about it not 2 minutes.

So we saying Drogba is no good cause Lampard takes most of chelski's penalty's then.

Schmeichel should take the penalties. He'd smash them in! :)

lol I was thinking this the other day - stick four players on the halfway line and let Kasper come and smash it, its ethier going to rip the keeper into the net with the ball or go flying over.

Danns sprinted to it and grabbed it. Nobody else was having it!

Then he missed lol

Probably couldn't see what he was doing what with having conjunctivitis.
