fleckneymike Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I don't get the fuss. Those players whose deals are due to expire (with the possible exception of Dyer) are on very good money for this level, money which realistically no club can afford anymore so the chances of them being 'poached' by Championship rivals is slim to non. The only Premiership sides likely to be interested would be those destined to return to the Championship so any player jumping ship is gambling on City not going up and those in the Prem staying up. As a club we cannot lose, let the contracts run down and if we fail to gain promotion we can offer vastly reduced terms or release them OR let the contracts run down, gain promotion and renew some deals. The players cannot really lose, gain promotion and they more than likely be offered a deal by us (or a competing deal by a relegated side with parachute payments), choke and they are unlikely to be offered a deal by us on the same terms and unlikely to be offered the same terms by a relegated side (as they choked) so the big incentive is to gain promotion and a new contract. Lets not forget we are also quite an attractive proposition for any average player, billionaire owners and a relatively big fish in a small pool so moving away isn't the wisest career move.
gazfox9 Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I guess they would argue that you're only one bad tackle/bad fall/slip/turn from a career ending injury. So whilst running down a contract you and your families future is slightly more precarious. You do realise tho, one bad injury etc won't see them cease earning? They'll be heavily insured to compensate for a large part of future earnings.

Agree with all of that. The only player I could see moving abroad is Kasper, but even then I'd imagine he wants to play in the PL. As a club we are in a position of power really, ironically, as posted by somebody earlier in the thread, due to the large contacts dished out whilst Sven was in charge.

lcfc81 Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Maybe the club need to communicate with the players better? E.g we won't be discussing contracts until ....... This is because ........ If as a result we don't offer you a new deal this will happen .......... It sounds like the plAyers want some clarification. (As I would)
Trav Le Bleu Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 IF we get promoted, all of this will become inconsequential. I'm surprised Wes doesn't know what you've written, we cannot afford his salary in the champoinsip I'm surprised that Wes doesn't know what Babs has written too. I thought he was Babs biggest fan! BTW, I do get what you meant
conLAD logan Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 offering them a new contract may make them less focused on the goal of promotion, this is why it is key that it is only offered as a reward as if we don't get promoted i think the team may have to take a different route and perhaps rebuild.
Babylon Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I'm surprised that Wes doesn't know what Babs has written too. I thought he was Babs biggest fan! BTW, I do get what you meant I'll send him a letter... And one to his family.
Guest ttfn Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Ah I knew we were all itching to have a moan. I think people mis-understand how the press works, they ask questions, if Wes phoned them up and started crying about the situation then fair enough, he's being unprofessional. What actually happened was he was asked questions and answered them honestly. I would rather he did that than give false platitude, or said we are all cool about this situation, I would never leave Leicester I love this club and I will play for free for the rest of my life, then fvck off at the first opportunity. Morgan is well within his rights not to comment or to just say "I am just concentrating on my football. My agent deals with my contract situation". At best it's naive.
Matt Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I'm sick of hearing about it in all honesty. It's simple, we get promoted most, if not all players out of contract will be given a new one. What's the panic? If we don't get promoted, well they wanna be putting themselves 'in the shop window' don't they? And personally I can't see many of them being snapped up by Premiership club's, Only Championship clubs are going to be interested I reckon, barr the odd player. Get on with the job, get your heads down, focus, finish the job that we are half way through. Simple.
coatsworthstache Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 You do realise tho, one bad injury etc won't see them cease earning? They'll be heavily insured to compensate for a large part of future earnings. No I didn't know anything about players insurance. I imagine it would be a nightmare to get a payout from it should you get a career ending injury given that players always play with injuries and niggles, and with pain killing injections. I guess I was trying to think how I'd feel in a similar situation in my own work. If I'm working somewhere on a temporary contract and there is no guarantee of having that contract renewed I'd start to look for other work as that contract ran down.
kingfox Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Both Morgan and Nugent not in the starting 11 today. Obviously off to Forest.
HitchinFox Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 I nearly got angry at what I thought, at first, was a piece of journalism on this topic. I've set up a google news alert for everything to do with the club and this piece of junk popped in my inbox. "Leicester City may be coasting at the top of the league, however, due to contractual issues with many key players of the first team squad, it could possibly be on the brink of collapse."And then: "Leicester City have finally started to find form this season, after many years of throwing money at trying to earn promotion. But unfortunately, it may have come one or two years too late and the finances at the King Power are far from healthy, which has left the club in no man's land." Infuriated, I clicked on the link to the story to find out what kind of a t**t would write something like that - and it turns out it's only some 22-year-old d**khead writing for free on a blog. Probably a fan of the scum anyway. http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/01/04/sp-leicester-city-captain-leaves-door-open-for-nottingham-forest/ The only serious point is, of course, that we do have a couple of key players out of contract. Really do hope we get Wes' name on the dotted line.
Merging Cultures Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Why would any player want a new contract now when they could get us promoted and push for a much better contract?

Really do hope we get Wes' name on the dotted line. Who's up for coming up with some bullshit about our rivals and see how far it goes? "Forest players unsettled as Davies says he needs to bring in more players", "QPR face dressing room mutiny as Harry says 'I need to bring in 20 strikers'", "Burnley face crisis talks as Ings wants Premier move", "Derby in meltdown as Will Hughes forces move". Keyboard warriors stirring up bollocks as we're riding high. Similar situation to Wheeler Dealer saying stuff about us in the press. If NFP had less class, he'd have been constantly banging on about how Harry has the highest budget in the league. We're there to be shot down as we're top of the league - the only thing the club can do is ignore it, keep going as we have done and make sure we get the job done. Until anything happens (either on the pitch or off the pitch) I'm not worried by stories like this and have complete faith in NFP's ability to handle the situation. The players will be rewarded with new contracts if they do their jobs and get promotion. If they don't, then they'll either have to accept less money here, or accept less money elsewhere. Hopefully we won't have to listen to more of this guff, the players will get their heads down and get us the promotion that we all want.
Strokes Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 All this proves that their agents can't find them a deal as good as they are currently on. It's self promotion and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 The Davies thing would gives the club a bit of leverage
J.Lisemore Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 'I want to stay' ...yeah I bet he does on that ridiculous contract, just wait until he hears the word 'paycut'.
TheUltimateWinner Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 Good leadership. Perfect captain material. Wes is a great player but come on, don't throw your toys out the pram mate. Kasper is in the same boat and he respected our decisions.
ImBlue Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 'I want to stay' ...yeah I bet he does on that ridiculous contract, just wait until he hears the word 'paycut'. Honestly, have a word with yourself. If you were paid well, and did better than expected, would YOU want to take a paycut? If we get promoted we get better players, if we stay down, we can't afford his wages. What message does that give to wes? Our captain? He is 30 years old and has about 3 years left and has to provide for a family for the rest of his life. Not likely to get a decent job after is he? Give the guy a break, it's a job and he wants security and to be paid in line with the best defenders in the league. If he doesn't get a contract, think of what he will have to do, move house etc, schools for his kids etc. this talk about it being selfish is just plain deluded. He has earned his contract, not to even talk about it to him is downright disrespectful from leicester.
Bayfox Posted 4 January 2014 Posted 4 January 2014 This just seems like a vicious circle. we clearly aren't prepared to offer the players contracts until we know what division we are in. 1 due to differing budgets and 2 maybe if we go up we deem some of them not good enough. Limbo ensues we also havent offered the manager a contract despite the fact he is the best man for either job. If he gets us up he deserves a crack at staying there. if we dont go up he still looks the best man for the job anyway. but is he going to sign a new deal if he isnt sure what squad he will have left to mount another challenge if he doesnt get us up. it seems to me the owners need to decide on nfp first.

Maybe he has been careful but if that is the root of his fears then he only has himself to blame. I'm not breaching the paycut argument of whether he should or shouldn't take one or whether its right or wrong but the if he is worried regards his future, he has probably earnt many times what the 'average' person earns in their lifetime and if he hasn't been careful throughout his career with his money knowing full well football is a short career he only has himself to blame. He could/can live a luxury lifestyle, better than you or me and still live that lifestyle after football I know.

I get this, but surely, if we get promoted with these players and get better ones, a championship team would want them? Actually, I know they would. And if we lose wes, kasper, dyer, nugent because we don't want to commit to contracts. How much money would we have to spend on transfer fees for BETTER players? Them fees would probably eclipse all there contracts after we let them go or free. Chuck in the equation that we got bids on kasper and wes 6 months ago for a combined £4m, it makes it very hard to swallow.

Agree with this completely. It would be stupid to offer the (well-paid) players new deals before establishing who the manager is going to be. For all we know a new man could come in and demand we play an insanely high defensive line, a la AVB, and Schmeichel and Morgan May all of a sudden be surplus to requirements and we could have another Mills/Beckford/Danns scenario.

So about 520 weeks of 6k. Around £3m for his whole career? Not that much more than an average person. Edit: maybe it is but it's not what people think they earn. Granted its over a short period, and we can go into morals of a footballer but when all is said and done, Leicester cannot complain if he leaves regardless of what happens because we ask for player loyalty, but we have shown ZERO loyalty to players that are at the minute getting us promoted. And will we if we do? I doubt it. We all have a go at players, but clubs are the most unloyal part of football.
