ElusiveEd Posted 21 February 2014 Posted 21 February 2014 I have just seen the headline above and read the first few paragraphs of the report. £78 million over 5 years £300 grand a week Seriously, as much as I love football, this is obscene. Is he REALLY worth that? I guess somebody must think so. Where is this going to end? It's getting out of hand now surely?
Fox92 Posted 21 February 2014 Posted 21 February 2014 It got out of hand ages ago. You've got footballers on more than firefighters, air traffic controllers etc. it's ridiculous. Just wish there was a cap and ticket prices were reduced. Nobody needs that much money, regardless of whether you want it (I know we all would love that) or not. In terms of Rooney himself, his team work and work rate is brilliant to see. Highlighted him on motd the other week, he chased back from a corner all the way to his own six yard box in time to put the ball out for a corner. Brilliant to see.
sdb Posted 21 February 2014 Posted 21 February 2014 Embarassing. For Utd, for Rooney, for football and all it's fans. What are we talking here, the 50, 60th best player in the world? We're the big losers here, and there's plenty from a situation like this. Silver lining is Man Utd have put a lot of their eggs in the basket carried by a player who doesn't even intrinsically want to be there - that's pretty funny.
Dan Posted 21 February 2014 Posted 21 February 2014 Embarrassing even considering the modern day market. He's worth half that at most.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 And he says he's an Evertonian.
Fox42 Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Now imagine if he picks up and sustains a long term injury...
Strokes Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Man utd are mugs, he is past his best, they should have sold him in the summer. Fergie wanted rid for good reason.
Danno Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Still a great player, '60th best player in the world' lol.
MC Prussian Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Still a great player, '60th best player in the world' lol. I wouldn't be so harsh on Rooney, but let's face it. He's way past his best. Or maybe Moyes should employ him as a striker again - in the MOTD match reports, I usually see him in a centre-forward role. The new deal is simply obscene and a slap in the face of any football fan and the comparativeness in general. Way too much money for a former star player on the decline. Feels as if Manchester United are desperate to cling on to their poster boy in order to guarantee steady influx of merchandise revenue.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 There's a lot of p!ssed off Man Utd fans saying he's taking advantage, I think I'd agree with that. I don't know much about Man U, but Rooney never looks that interested when I've seen him on MOTD.
C-man Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Depends on what you're definition is but for me he isn't 'world class'. By that I mean he wouldn't get in my 'World 30' - too many great strikers better than him. Just because he is our best player doesn't mean he is world class. How many clubs were really, I mean really, interested in him? Convinced his agent plants the stories re Chelsea/PSG. His best attribute is his workrate. At times his touch is piss poor. In my opinion he has robbed United for a second time here. Moyes has completely fvcked it here.
Vlad the Fox Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Nothing against Rooney for taking it if someone is a big enough fool to offer him it, anyone would. But something needs to be done, how much will Messi's next contract be or Ronaldo's now? 500k 750k 1m? This is only ever going to push ticket prices up and up and force more and more of the core historical fans out the stadiums. The football authorities seriously need to do something because this won't stop, maybe if supporters groups and the media show outrage it can force change. It would be difficult to force this change and wage cap today's top players but they can start with the next crop of youngsters coming through and set wages at a level allowing more clubs to compete for the top players, if they don't like it they can train for another job.
Jimothy Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 It got out of hand ages ago. You've got footballers on more than firefighters, air traffic controllers etc. it's ridiculous. Sorry, people saying this really winds me up. Lots of people out there working for companies earn more than people working for government funded organisations. Wayne Rooney's wage has nothing to do with how much a nurse or firefighter gets, in fact his tax probably pays for a few of their wages. If my boss wants to pay me £1m a year (sadly he doesn't), it's up to him, that won't effect how much a firefighter gets. The problem comes, and it has in football, is when they are earning more than the company can really afford. If a company wants to send themselves spiralling into financial oblivion by over paying its staff that's their choice and there is nothing we can do about it. I agree £300k is a ridiculous amount for Wayne Rooney to earn, but there are probably a lot of people out there on stupid money who don't deserve it, but aren't called Wayne Rooney so don't get in the paper. And some of those will be taking from the same pot as your firefighters etc, so maybe it's them you should be angry at.

You might have the wrong end of the stick, I'm not angry at anyone, just putting it into perspective. What you've wrote, I agree with, lets face it if someone puts a contract in front of me and says "play for Manchester United and I'll give you 300k a week" then I'm going to say yes. It's not the footballers fault, they are only human and what the best for themselves, it's the owners and maybe authorities (they should cap it now) I blame. There are plenty of people that have ridiculous pay in correlation to their job, but only a few get documented because of who they are, politicians, footballers etc... It's like when a footballer sleeps with someone he shouldn't, the media document it, because of who they are. It makes front page news (sadly, well it does if it's a tabloid), but people ignore the fact that it goes on every day, but just because it's Wayne Rooney doing it then it is immoral (I know it is anyway). I know I might be going off track slightly, but in the short I mean it doesn't make it right just because it's covered in the media. Footballers are heavily documented, and like you said, others arn't that do it, but because this is a football forum and it's Rooney, then I used him and his wage as an example.

purpleronnie Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Great timing for Rooney again, Utd struggling that they're scared stiff about losing one of the few top players they have, I do find it odd that rooney seems to dismiss the CL, seems a lack of ambition to me but maybe he thinks its just a one off and they'll be back at the top next season. If I earnt 300,000 a week and was already a multi millionaire I'd have to give half my wages away.

If he played centre forward he'd be in the top 5 strikers in the league.
maynefox Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 It's distasteful. Regardless if you are the best footballer ever. Do you NEED that much money? No, no one does - it's all gone mental and something needs to be done to cap the wages. He earns just under £43,000 A DAY. A DAY!!! That is not even what some people make a year. I fear for the marketing of football in the future ... "Now we go to our 30 second mid-first half advert" - like the blemming NFL.

I'm sure he'd get into any team in the world.
Mack Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 50p a second for a player who has in truth been nothing special for a number of years now. PANIC has set in at United, and moves like this will just make it harder for them to dig their way out of the hole they have found themselves in, as new high quality signings will see this as the green light to turn the screw over their contract.
J.Lisemore Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 lol Man Utd can afford to pay this sort of silly money, but 300K a week for a player clearly past his best... Idiots.
MooseBreath Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 I don't have any issue with the ethical side of it. If millions of people are willing to pay so much to see you do what you do, then you're worth the money. Nobody forces anybody to pay towarda watching football, so their value can only be a fair and democratic representation of what they are worth. However I do think moyes has made a big mistake here. In pure footballing terms there is no way rooney is worth that much, and with failure to qualify for the CL looking likely and the resultant drop in revenues and therefore spending power, it's a kind of sven-esque commitment to long term high spending that might cripple utd for a good few years. Should have sold him and used the proceeds to bring in two or three promising youngsters.
Raj Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 We all know its wrong but if someone wants to pay them what can you do. If someone daft enough offered me double wages id be gone.... Money is stupid in football.
foxes_rule1978 Posted 22 February 2014 Posted 22 February 2014 Not Rooney's fault, he has stated he wanted to leave several times if United keep bowing down to him why not, who wouldn't? he is a world class player but for this money they should have just sold him and got another top quality player in for less a week. Doesn't make sense... He isn't Messi or Ronaldo
