foxfanazer Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Not overly excited about this deal but if he gets the goals to keep us up then it will prove to be a great bit of business. Hope people don't get on his back if he doesn't start firing straight away I do think a partnership of him and Vardy could be very rewarding if they click. Nit sure we'll play with 2 strikers though
foxes_rule1978 Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 7.5mill that is a lot, this guy better be worth it. I trust Pearson though and know he certainly wouldn't spend that kind of cash on someone he doesn't feel is worth that...
lgfualol Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Pros- Best header of the ball ive ever seen. Can get ridiculous power even if theres no pace on the cross. Great accuracy too even with his height. Knows where the goal is. 9 times out of 10, he will hit the ball well and at least test the keeper or get the shot around the target. Those points are pretty much why Nige wanted him. The amount of times our strikers missed the target last season was sometimes embarrassing, and those same chances will come up in the premiership and it's vital someone can at least hit the target. And we only scored from about two set piece crosses last season, he'll be handy.
sphericalfox Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 The more I consider this potential outlay, the more I perhaps try to justify it. In any reality £7m is a serious amount of money considering his age and his lack of Prem experience. However, Pearson/staff have clearly been tracking him for some time, and his attributes are what are needed to fulfil our ambitions. If these enable or balance out our strikeforce, then perhaps the outlay will actually increase the value of our other players. Thus justifying the cost. If his hold-up play is the key attribute, allows either Vardy, Mahrez, Knocky, or Wood to get on the scoresheet in whatever combo that we put out then we should all be happy, because our team this season will definitely need to rely on goals from all of our offensive players to maintain a place in the Prem, and that hopefully this won't be missed by our fickle minority who might jump on Ulloa for either instant return on his price tag, it might in fact increase the value of our other players by virtue of his graft. He might turn out to be a dud, who knows, but I suspect that Pearson and Co have done their homework and he has the right character to lift the team, and contribute outside of a goal tally too. Let's hope now we've made it very clear that we want him that his agent rinses us for his wage packet and contract.
teblin Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Brighton fan here, ive come to give you the 'lowdown' on your record new signing- giving you the pros and cons and what my valuation is. Ulloa signed for us in January 2012 for £2million from Almeria (spanish 2nd div), alot of money for someone no one had heard of or could even pronounce his name! ( OO-SHOA-A ) - (with the 'SH' sounding like the 'zh' in 'zherkov'). He became an instant fan favourite scoring a brilliant diving header against arsenal. He then became a fan favourite, banging a few goals before the end of the season. During last season, he hit 14 championship goals and was suspended for 4, whilst being injured for 2 months so its about 14 in 30 games. Not too shabby. Pros- Best header of the ball ive ever seen. Can get ridiculous power even if theres no pace on the cross. Great accuracy too even with his height. Knows where the goal is. 9 times out of 10, he will hit the ball well and at least test the keeper or get the shot around the target. Passionate. Although players do sometimes look down, the emotion he showed scoring that last minute goal vs forest las tseason was immense. Shows he has good team spirit- generally has a smile on his face. Pace- despite his appearance, he can outrun alot of defenders whenm he wants to, mainly shrugging them off the ball if theyre in a 1v1 battle. Pretty good Pros, right? Now, here are the points most people miss... Cons- Lazy. His movement 90% of the time is attrotious. He is awful at getting back from offside positions. You WILL notice this. Its like he needs to be motivated from an opponents player to annoy him before he'll properly chase down the ball. First touch. Dont even get me started. Again, 9 times out of 10, he loses the ball with his first touch. Its like his foot is a spring at times. Occasionally holds the ball up well, good chest control, bad feet touch. Strength. Another one you may think is bizarre. Fact is, he looks really strong and powerful, but ends up on the floor most times- even from players such as Sam Byram. Well I hope this gives you a little insight into your record signing. We will miss him here, but I cant help thinking that we need someone who moves more with our passing style of play. Someone with a bit more pace to play balls in behind to. Who knows, maybe he will kick himself up the arse and sort out his laziness and first touch. If he does taht, youve got a hell of a player. Id say with jus tthe pros hes worth about £7million, but the cons, realistically, take my valuation to about £5.5million. Thanks for the memories Ulloa, and best of luck to him and you guys in the prem. That one is interesting as a lot of our success last season was to do with pressing.

dpjfox Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 this transfer has dragged on for so long surely personal terms have already been sorted/agreed by his agent. I hope the crowd give him time and i hope he can handle the big price tag. He certainly will enable us to play a 4-2-3-1 formation, i see him as a better version of big stevie howard
artursteppe Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Kevin Phillips, before he ever started playing in the Premiership had no experience of playing in the Premiership - same as any player really. Were Sunderland that stupid to give him his first season in the Prem when he scored 30 goals. I think that is right ------ 30 goals........... in his first season!!!!!!!

artursteppe Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Messi wouldn't get more than six in the Premiertship, because he has never played in the Prem before. He is not very tall either and would rarely score from headers. His pace is ok, but not really fast, and he is not very physical - hope we don't get linked with buying anyone like him, whatever the price, he obviously wouldn't be worth it.

artursteppe Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 If anyone wants to truly make any attempt to quantify our new player, consider this. Compare chances created by Brighton for the season with chances created by Leicester last season, then see how it compares and have a guess at whether Ulloa might have scored 16 for us, or less, or many more. I know what my guess would be. Then ask yourself if he would be likely to score more, or less than Vardy or Nugent. I know what my guess would be and I love our boys.
cgull Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Another Brighton fan here. Disagree with the previous Albionite, I don't think he is lazy. He won't run around a la Craig Mackail-Smith but operated for us as the lone striker and just understands that you need to conserve energy in that role. He MAY be a little short on stamina but I suspect you will use him differently anyway. His first touch is not that bad either and he is very powerful, he doesn't need to go down under the challenge, he chooses to! In Spain he would have had an automatic free kick every time he was challenged from behind, he still needs to learn that our game is refereed differently. I think he will do very well for you and while I believe that the fee (if the £7.5m or so is accurate) is about right at present he may well prove to be something of a bargain for you in the months ahead. I bear no grudge and if he has really been offered circa 45 grand a week then I don't blame him one jot. All the best for the coming season, I am pretty sure you will be alright anyway.
The Guvnor Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Must admit I haven't seen a lot of this player apart from the play off's and I honestly thought he was gash, looked lazy and a sulker. A lot of FT posters saying how well he played against us, well I remember a certain Matt Mills doing the same and look what happened there so I sincerely hope this purchase is not on the basis of that performance! However in saying that I am not a professional scout and he has been Pearson's number one target, will improve our aerial threat which has been woeful ,so here's hoping he settles in and lives up to Pearsons expectations!!
artursteppe Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Messi is not really fast??? Messi is not very physical??? Behave mate!!! I think you do not understand my humour dude, I also think Messi would actually get more than six goals in the Prem DOH!
Hack Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Don't cry for me Argentina, the truth is we paid too much for you That can't be correct about paying too much. We payed the price to needed. The seller gets to determine the price and we wanted to buy. By the what difference does it make what we pay? This club clearly does not spend frivolously. The fact that Nige and team were prepared to pay this price just says how much they rate Leo. I am happy with that. Why don't you just wait till this season plays out to see if it is a fair price or not. it is now done and it is only right for everyone to get behind him and the team.
Carlos88LCFC Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Nothing, I just don't think he's the quality needed for the Premier League. Same can be said for GTF. My opinion of these is that they are here to help the younger players devolop and also back up if we have space on the bench somewhere.

I know what my guess would be. Then ask yourself if he would be likely to score more, or less than Vardy or Nugent. We will have created more chances throughout the season than Brighton, no doubt. I'm guessing he would have got a few for us last season, just like Nugent and Vardy, everyone saw the amount of headers we missed - set pieces wasted etc - and this will hopefully rectify that problem. Ulloa is a different player to Nugent and Vardy, if I'm looking for someone to run at a player then I'd pick Vardy but if I'm looking for someone to get on the end of a cross then I want Ulloa to be there over anybody else. I will also add that target men aren't exactly cheap. How much did Sunderland pay for Wickham, £9million? How much did Hull pay for Jelavic, £7.5million? How much did Liverpool pay for Carrol, £30million?

Hahahahaaa Let's hope Nigel knows what he's doing. We cannot carry a player with poor work rate, that is not our style at all. Hence why Beckford didn't fit in. Vardy's first touch improved ten fold last season though so perhaps we can get Ulloa to do the same, work rate is also something that can be worked on but sometimes that's just a players natural style. Look at Berbatov.
Babylon Posted 18 July 2014 Posted 18 July 2014 Yeah, because that really seems to be the way that Pearson and his team operate... Apparently it is... all that scouting stuff they showed on East Midlands news was for show. More than I would have wanted to spend, yes. But then again £1m+ for a lad from non league was more than I would have wanted to spend, and that turned out to be a bargain. With Prem money coming in, it's not really any bigger risk than that transfer was. Nige and the scouting team have obviously seen something in him. Although I will add, they've never had a great track record of buying strikers barring Vardy here or at Hull. The stats back up the Brighton fan about poor first touch, his stats for ball retention were shocking.
