Cardiff City striker Fraizer Campbell's move to Leicester City collapses over wage demands

Leicester City have ended their interest in signing Cardiff City striker Fraizer Campbell after refusing to meet his wage demands.

The decision by Leicester manager Nigel Pearson makes Crystal Palace favourites to land Campbell, although he could still stay with the Bluebirds.

Campbell, though, is keen to stay at Premier League level, and that means the Yorkshireman could be heading to London.

Leicester and Palace are the only clubs to have triggered Campbell’s release clause, which was set at £800,000 and rises to £900,000-plus with add-ons in terms of appearances and goals.

Now Leicester have been frightened off by Campbell’s demands for £40,000-a-week wages, but Palace remain in talks.

Huddersfield-born Campbell, 26, is under contract with Cardiff until 2016, but the Bluebirds are powerless to stop him leaving now the release clause has been triggered.

Pearson wanted to add Campbell to his squad, but Leicester have adopted a strict wage policy to maintain some parity among the squad’s earnings and to not disrupt the spirit.

Leicester seem to have accepted that Campbell is out of their reach financially and quickly turned back to Brighton striker Leonardo Ulloa.

Frightened off? Really? I dont think Big Nige is frightened. He just doesnt think the guy is worth more per week than the core of his team.

Something doesn't quite add up to me:

If we have bid £7 million for Ulloa, and Campbell would have cost £800K, the difference is £6.2 million.

There are 156 weeks in 3 years, £6.2 million divided by 156 is £39,743 (basically £40K per week).

So we could sign Campbell on a 3 year contract on the £40K he wants before we even pay Ulloa a penny in wages?

I think it's more to do with having an unproven player in the side on more money than most of the others. It could be disruptive, to say the least.

If that's the reason then fine, but we didn't back out because we can't afford it, like the article makes out.
