City's Internationals

Recommended Posts

Three Foxes took a step closer to European Championship qualification on Saturday night, as international week continued at pace.

A total of six Leicester City players were involved in international setups during a busy 24 hours across two continents, while another will have been watching on with interest from a distance.

In the quest to reach the 2016 European Championship Finals in France, Andrej Kramarić and Tom Lawrence were both named among the substitutes for their respective nations, as Andrej’s Croatia hosted Norway in Zagreb and Tom’s Wales travelled to Haifa to face Israel.

It proved a comfortable night for Croatia, who cruised to a 5-1 win that strengthened their grip on top spot in Group H. Marcelo Brozovic opened the scoring on 30 minutes before goals from Ivan Perisic and Ivica Olic shortly after half-time effectively secured the points.

Kramarić replaced Olic with just over 20 minutes to play before Norwich City’s Alexander Tettey pulled one back for Norway.

But goals from Gordon Schildenfeld and Danijel Pranjic wrapped up a comprehensive victory.

While Andy King was suspended for Wales’ Group B trip to Israel, Foxes team-mate Lawrence made the squad and was an unused substitute as Chris Coleman’s side recorded a hugely impressive 3-0 victory.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time, before a second-half double from Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale ensured Israel were fully punished for the dismissal of Eytan Tibi during the second period.

With 11 points from five games and now leading the group, Wales have put themselves in a promising position to reach their first major finals in nearly 60 years.

Earlier in the day, City skipper Wes Morgan featured prominently for Jamaica in their 2-1 friendly win over Venezuela in Montego Bay. Wes completed a full 90 minutes for the Reggae Boyz, who came from behind to secure victory thanks to goals from Giles Barnes and Darren Mattocks.

Jeffrey Schlupp's Ghana were also in friendly action as they took on Senegal in Le Havre, France. Having been named among the substitutes for the game, Jeff was introduced 20 minutes into the second half, but was unable to inspire the Black Stars to victory, as Senegal ran out 2-1 winners.

At Under-19 level, Ben Chilwell was an unused substitute for England, as they recorded a 1-0 victory over Azerbaijan in Bayeux, France. Manchester City’s Ashley Smith-Brown scored the decisive goal, which leaves England needing a win over France on Tuesday to book their place at this summer’s Under-19 European Championship Finals in Greece.

Although Tomas Dombrauskis won’t be joining them, the talented Foxes youngster started and played the full 90 minutes for Lithuania’s Under-19s in a 6-0 defeat to Russia.

The international football continues on Sunday, which could see Kasper Schmeichel (Denmark), Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) and Jack Barmby (England Under-20s) all in action.

Kasper made a few brilliant saves (notably against Griezmann and Lacazette), and couldn't really be faulted for either goal. His save from Griezmann that unfortunately went straight out to Lacazette for their first goal, was even more spectacular in slow motion. Distribution iffy at times, but then again, it was iffy for every single Danish player out there yesterday.

The central-defender could make his debut for the young Lions against Russia on Monday 8 June, before his nation face the same opposition on Wednesday 10 June, with both fixtures being played at Arena Khimki, Moscow.

So we could have 2 Moores playing central defence for the city in a few years time!

Yeah, he is but there was an article about him possibly switching allegiances and deciding to play for Chile instead. Ended up rejecting the chance I think.

Thanks. I missed that one.

Schmeichel played a full 90 for Denmark in their 2-1 friendly win against Montenegro. Could have possibly done better with the goal but didn't have an awful lot to do.

So good to see him as undisputed first choice for Denmark's No.1 now though. Used to find it frustrating when he was behind the likes of Thomas Sorenson and Anders Lindegaard who never played for Stoke or Manchester United respectively, yet Kasper turned out strong performances week in week out for us.

Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez is set to start for Algeria in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles on Saturday. The Foxes star is expected to replace Valencia midfielder Sofiane Feghouli, who has been forced to withdraw from the home clash because of a groin complaint. And it should mean Mahrez will get a chance to operate on the right-hand side for Algeria as he bids to show coach Christian Gourcouff what he can do in his favourite position. Mahrez had been expected to play on the left-hand side in Blida but will now switch flanks, allowing Dinamo Zagreb's Hilal Soudani to come into the line-up. Algeria are in Group G of AFCON qualifying alongside Ethiopia, Lesotho and Seychelles with only the top team assured of a place in the finals, to be held in Gabon in 2017. - See more at: https://www.clubcall.com/leicester-city/positional-switch-for-leicester-star-1771981.html?#sthash.NOuMHnR6.dpuf

how Joe Allen starts over Andy king amazes me

Don't know if it's just me but I would take Joe Allen over Andy King in that Wales side every day of the week. They already have Ledley who breaks down the play so the other centre mids job is to keep the ball which Allen does well!
