wow I really touched a nerve here didn't I

it was a terrible post. You sound like andy townsend. an opinion based on nothing, offering no insight to why you think it. just that you "can see it"

however keep at it & maybe mention somebody else's thoughts about your chosen topic, and claim them as your own. You just might get a job with ITV.

Well I've seen nothing else to change my opinion.

If it's England and we draw in a pre-World Cup match "it's ok because we arn't really trying". But if it's another team "Oh my God Uruguay only beat Northen Ireland 1-0, Italy drew with Luxembourg we're going to win the World Cup".

Roy's too negative for me, always has been, so when don't get past group stages then the FA might look into a change. Hope I'm wrong, though.

Was he too negative when we went for it against Montenegro and Poland at home? England were the third highest scorers in Uefa qualifying for goodness sake.

His one tournament so far yielded 5 goals in 4 games which although not brilliant knocks Capello's 3 goals at the 2010 World Cup into a cocked hat.

Hodgson is not a negative manager - I really don't know where this comes from. Before the last euros he had 6 weeks to bring a side together so understandably (and successfully) he made us hard to beat. Even in that environment he gave Oxlade-Chamberlain a chance against the French.

Since then England have ground out results against their closest competitors away and beaten them comprehensively at home (except Ukraine). In a tournament environment not losing that first game will be absolutely crucial.

Even yesterday it wasn't for want of trying that we didn't score. Sturridge missed 3 chances, 1 of which was gilt-edged and a product of one of the nicest England attacking moves I've seen in a while.

But not at Italy's measly 1-1 draw with Luxembourg?

I meant both as in both England and Italy.

This is why I don't understand his negativity. We CAN attack.

Buzzing for this now lol

As am I. No level of shitness in friendlies is going to ruin the World Cup for me.

No me neither to be honest. Zero expectations so getting out of group will be a bonus. Just be good to watch competitive football again. Seems like the season ended ages ago already lol

Over two months since we were promoted. Frightening.

If we beat Italy, the 'we ''re gonna win it' optimism will be unbearable.

I think we''ll beat Italy.

One massive blow for England is certainly Theo Walcott I do believe this would have been his tournament, the same for Andros Townsend. So far Adam Lallana hasn't convinced me he's an international player.

Really?  So you think we'll do better against Uruguay and Costa Rica than Italy will?  I agree a draw would be a good result but only because Italy are a good team, not because it would really help us qualifying.

I think the game against the hardest opponents is the least important surely... Meaning if we beat the other two more important and winnable games we're more likely get through as Italy should in theory also win those games.

It's about time we won our opening game in a tournament, Italy are nothing to be afraid of. Sterling must start for me and Barkley is better coming from the bench with 30 mins to go in the heat, he could really finish them off.

In all honesty, I reckon this is the worst post I have read on this forum in a loooooooong time.

Still not scared of Italy, if Roy uses his minute brain and realises that the Italians are there for the taking and sets out to beat them, we could win the game before HT.

Roy needs to unleash Sterling and Barkley from the off, the Italians will not know what has hit them, none (except Balotelli) of slime ball pasta eating jerks have ever come up against Barkley or Sterling (not even in a friendly I think), they will not have a clue who they are!

The team has to be: Hart, Johnson, Cahill, Jagielka, Baines, Gerrard, Henderson, Sterling, Barkley, Lallana and Sturridge.

My only fear is, we have no plan b, yeah we will have a few subs who can make the difference but there is no other formation, Hodgson is obsessed with this 4-2-3-1, it used to be such a free attacking formation but under Hodgson it has become military like, setting up with Welbeck on the left of midfield is ridiculous.

Yes, the experienced world cup winners won't know what's hit them. I'm sure it'll be a rout.

I have literally no idea where this idea of Hodgson's perceived 'negativity' has come from.

In most games I have seen England play since his arrival we have been on top for the majority. Citing the game against Italy in 2012 doesn't do it for me - it's too long ago to have any bearing on next week's game.

1- That was 8 years ago

2 - They got knocked out in the group stage in 2010, drawing against NZ in the process.

As a neutral, I honestly believe that England will beat Italy quite well.

The realistic candidates to replace Hodgson right now are Pardew, Allardyce and Bruce- none of whom are exciting managers and any better than Hodgson. They aren't going to go foreign again, so this is what we are left with, unless the FA go very leftfield and appoint Pearson or Dyche.

Italy might historically be better than Uruguay but at the moment there's a debate, there's very little between the three of us if you ask me. Costa Rica aren't to be written off entirely I can see them tripping one of us up during the course of the group stage.

You've got to hate that optimism.

:)

We''ve all been there. We think 'hang on a mo, we could go far this time. We look alright.'

And then we draw unluckily and go out on pens. Again.

If it's the hope that kills you, better to abandon hope.

Italy's final practice match is on Sky Sports 3 tonight 9.15pm  if anyone has an interest. Will only be fringe players though.

Agree with this. Barkley will be chomping at the bit to come on and change the game - of course he'd want to start, but I think Roy is playing it coy with him.

To be fair, friendly result's mean fvck all - look at Leicester's pre-season and look where we ended up. I'm not saying England are going to win the World Cup, I'm merely saying friendly's mean jack shit.  Roy believes in the players who he picks and I'm pretty sure who ever he picks, whether liked or not, the nation will get behind the boys.

Again, I believe we have enough to do the Italians, there is nothing to fear from them, it's now down to the 11 to believe in themselves, put ego's aside and fvcking make their nation proud.

Oh, again someone is bringing up something from 8 years ago where only 2 players will start v England who started that Final.

Before replying to my posts, think or you will look daft.
