CosbehFox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 This ain't gonna be pretty. Uruguay will play so deep to counteract England's pace. I expect them to put 11 behind the ball and counteract us. They will have seen how struggled to break down and use the ball quick in the final 20 against Italy.
ScouseFox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 yeah but i'm not arsed what anyone says there's a difference between taking a load of penalties for southampton in league one or the championship and taking one in a world cup, especially a shootout
LAprice_ Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Keep an eye on Diego Lugano. Whenever he goes up for set-pieces he dives all over the place looking for penalties.
purpleronnie Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 I feel a bit sorry for Rooney really, he's never going to get any praise no matter what he does. Can't believe people are suggesting we drop the bloke who has scored and assisted the most goals in Hodgson's time as England manager because he had one shit game playing totally out of position. For whatever reason, he's not done well in World Cups, but on paper he's our best player and I'm sure we're more likely to win games with him on the field, than when he's off it. If he scores and we win the press will be praising him to the hilt, until recently he's been the poster boy of english football despite failing to score in 2 previous WC's. The media wanted a superstar and Rooney was it and its hard for them to let it go. I think Rooney has been pretty lucky as far as the media is concerned, for many years he could do no wrong. That said it would be typical of the press to vilify one player if we failed, usually it's the manager but for this World Cup no doubt it will be Rooney.
Ric Flair Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Keep and eye on Diego Lugano. Whenever he goes up for set-pieces he dives all over the place looking for penalties. Not playing.

It isn't just 'one shit game' though. I agree it's definitely a team effort - I just think it's about time Rooney whipped out some of the magic we all know he has. I've got a feeling tonight will be the night.

If Roy goes with the same system, its plain that Rooney isn't one of the best 11. Id argue that under most varients of systems, tactically Rooney is not the best option for a start.
AKCJ Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 If Rooney does play well, I hope he does, I don't want the media rimming him or Hodgson because he's had one good game - so many bad performances can't be swept under the carpet easily. I hope they do. Rooney has had one exceptional tournament and that was in 2004, when everybody rimmed him. He's clearly a confidence player and I think that he'll benefit no end from the Country being fully supportive of him. Every tournament bar the Euros in '04 we've slated him for everything. It's about time we stuck up for him a bit.
ousefox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Have people not seen Gerrard's penalties this year? If I remember correctly without checking, I'm sure the only one he missed hit the post and that was after having already scored two in the same game. Obviously something he's worked on and has been very cool under pressure. Bound to be him taking it unless Lambert is playing. Odds on England being the first team to miss a penalty though...

Yeah Gerrard's penalties have been fantastic this season but I would rather Baines myself. I'm not even slightly arsed about England to be fair. Just enjoying this World Cup for what it is and it's the best we've had for years. Shut up.
Samilktray Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Why would you post in an england match thread if you're 'not arsed' about England. Plenty of other threads that may be of more interest. Strange guy.

Because I am arsed about the World Cup I'm just fed up of the constant hype of them. I want them to win, but I won't lose sleep if they lose. In fact, i'll be more pissed off that i'll lose a fiver if they lose.

Well yes, in this World Cup it is, and it's a game where he was played well out of position but still managed to lay on a goal for the side. Unless you're suggesting that his previous World Cup campaigns have any bearing at all on how he performs in this one? He's our top scorer and assister since Hodgson took over and he scored the most goals in qualifying for this tournament. He's our best player and the only player we've got that even approaches being 'world class'. I agree - he needs to give the performance he's undoubtedly capable of, but those calling for him to be dropped are completely mad IMO.

Do you think many top nations would stick with a striker who hadn't previously scored in 2 world cups and is out of form? I'm not saying he should be dropped but I understand why some might think that, so I think it's far from 'mad'.

Dan Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 yeah but i'm not arsed what anyone says there's a difference between taking a load of penalties for southampton in league one or the championship and taking one in a world cup, especially a shootout Correct. The technique of scoring a penalty is minimal. It's mentality and it's a mentality that you simply cannot train for. You've either got it or you haven't. Every professional footballer can score a penalty. If Roy goes with the same system, its plain that Rooney isn't one of the best 11. Id argue that under most varients of systems, tactically Rooney is not the best option for a start. So would I, but the reality is - he's going to start, you get the hint the side will be built around him and whilst I don't agree with that, there's no point slagging him off before it's even happened. He's so overdue a big moment it's untrue. Tonight would be ideal. Still got a feeling we'll be cheated out of this.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Spain have been relying on Torres to get them back into games. We can't be that crazy.
Strokes Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Don't you know it's in the "in-thing" to slag off your own players? Not trying to pick a fight with you Bert but its hardly following a trend criticizing inept displays. Everyone intitilled to an opinion on a starting line, whether or not it follows the status quo. My motives for not wanting Rooney to start are that I don't beleive he is (in current form and condition) the best option available and therefore the best chance we have of winning. Rooney on his day can be unplayable but it is long since we have seen that day and others merit an opportunity.
