England v Uruguay

For anyone who looks at past history for re-occurances, the last time England lost an opening group game in a major tournament was in 2004. We played France off the park at times and somehow lost 2-1, we showed signs of similar devastating play last saturday vs Italy. 10 years ago we then ripped apart Switzerland and Croatia to qualify from our group. In both of those games a certain Wayne Rooney was simply unplayable. He scored 4 goals and had the world at his feet. What are the chances of history repeating itself? This whole hysteria about him right now is electrifying and I can picture the headlines on friday morning. Wayne, the stage is yours. Do the fcukin job.

Lets hope he proves his doubters wrong. If he has a stinker then i wouldnt play him vs Costa Rica. We will most likely already be going home anyway so let Barkley have a full 90 minutes.

I think we will win 2-1 with Rooney 1st goal.A Uruguay equaliser with Lambert coming off the bench to score a winning header

Just hope Rooney plays to the standard he can, I'd play him with upfront with Sturridge. If he's out on he left again, then we may aswell pack up and go home.

I'm not saying he'll 'only' play RB, but I'm guessing Hodgson's thinking is that that will be his primary position. Just like Jones/Smalling's primary positions will be CB.

I agree with pancake face for once, doubt it'll be Milner.

Still not looking forwards to this. At least we can lose and still somehow have an outside chance of qualifying. Hate to be confirmed as going home after a week.

I had money on a Rooney brace against Italy 12/1 and a Sturridge brace 14/1. Will be going with both bets again for this one. COME ON.

It'll be the same team, I'm pretty sure. I reckon Roy will switch Rooney for Sterling and that will be that.

Will be significantly cooler so let's hope for a better tempo. I'm sure the players didn't shut down Italy in the manner they would have liked to because they'd have bust their lungs.

Like Ric said, this has a bit of a Euro 2004 feel about it.

Hopefully we go out there tomorrow and play well and beat Uruguay 2 or 3-0, give us all something to feel good about on Friday and gives the country a lift for the rest of the tournament.

If playing Wayne Rooney in the number 10 role behind Sturridge works then I will be the first to say fair play Roy.

ENGLAND.

yeah except this year's rooney of 04 is going to be sterling. i'd be gutted if lugano wasn't playing, i've had lovely dreams about him trying to catch sterling on the break all week.

Yeah but with him and Perrira both out their going their defense is going to be weak anyway.

Rooney has to deliver. If we're seriously shafting Sterling out wide to stick Rooney in the number ten role then I'll be a bit concerned.

Come on Wayne. You are seriously due a big performance....

If Rooney doesn't perform tomorrow night it's not unimaginable that him being an England regular could be over. If he does perform like we know he can, he will go on a serious run, he's a massive confidence player.

tbh I think we could all do without the Wayne Rooney this, Wayne Rooney that.

The sooner we realize that international football is about 11 players turning up and not one the better.

I think Gordon Strachan made a fair point, Sterling is pretty happy holding the wing but dipping into the middle, whilst Rooney prefers holding the middle but occasionally drifting out wide. Tactically it makes sense.

I've already done a nervous poo and there's still 12 hours to go. Long day in store.

Pal, I've got IBS. I have a steady 5-10 pony's a day. On gigs like today i'm clocking up a quarter century. I've had 6 already. I'll probably eat my lunch on there.
