Grandad. Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 It's sods law though that even if he isn't fit he'll still manage to score/win a dubious penalty/get one of our men sent off Without jynxing us, Suarez has struggled v Cahill and only got the better of Jagielka once in the 4-0 win this season, doesn't like their style of defending, have to firm with him. I think he will start but come off early, noway is he fit enough for this game, just Luis Suarez being Luis Suarez and wanting to play every minute of every game.
StanSP Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Like Ric (again) above, even an unfit Suarez could do some business. It'll just harm him more in the long-term than it will England. It's not all about Suarez though - I think Phil Jones is the only one who could go hard on him and absolutely not a give a shit. He has the face to go with it too. Uruguay's defence is weak so we need to exert pressure as and when possible on them. Focus on getting the ball to the feet of the front 4 we'll be fine I think. Play as much as we can in their half and that in itself will lessen the threat of Suarez/Cavani. Both of them won't like coming deep to get the ball (especially unfit Suarez not wanting to do too much to strain himself). It may sound nasty, but whoever is marking Suarez at the time, give him a knock or 2 to his knee he had surgery on. You won't get sent off for a marginally late tackle. Just don't make it look reckless (studs up Roy Keane-style).
Captain... Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 How would playing Jones or Milner who aren't natural central midfielders give us more control in the middle of the park over Jordan Henderson? I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense. Henderson has restarted his career in being a midfielder who has bite and can take control of games by winning the ball back and giving it simple. Milner is a natural Center Mid who has been played out of position for years, I'm still not sure why, Jones started his career at Blackburn as centre mid and looked very impressive there, that is why United paid so much money for him, they have also played him in the 2 this season, I'm just trying to see what options we have, which seems very limited, I find Roy's preferred formation strange seeing as the only player that regularly plays in the 2 of a 4231 is Lampard. Henderson is a decent player, but as you have said Gerrard and Henderson needed help in there against Italy, they didn't offer enough protection and couldn't dominate the midfield. I don't think we have brought the players to play that formation, specifically 2 undroppables Gerrard and a fit Rooney, I just can't see any combination of 4231 with both of them in it that doesn't look unbalanced. I like your diamond suggestion, but I think it is too narrow and doesn't protect the full backs, I would prefer a 4312, but I just don't see Roy changing it: Hart Johnson Cahill Jags Baines Milner* Gerrard Henderson Sterling Sturridge Rooney * could play Lallana or Wilshire in there, but I think Milner is more disciplined and very underrated especially in a more central role
LCFC FOX Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Isn't Milner the back up right back? So I doubt he'll start in midfield
AKCJ Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 I agree completely, Sturridge plays better in a two and predominantly on the right of a two. Hence the diamond working so well. Would like to see: Gerard Henderson/Wilshere Barkley Sterling Sturridge Rooney
Captain... Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Isn't Milner the back up right back? So I doubt he'll start in midfield Considering Jones and Smalling have both played a number of games at right back I would say they will get the nod ahead of Milner, Milner is a Central midfielder, he started out there and his best season in the Prem was for Villa in the Centre. His versatility has probably stopped him having a much more successful career at club and international level, as shown by hodgson trying him at right back.

So why did Jones/Smalling not shift out to RB in the friendly(ies)? Milner's been taken primarily as back-up for Glen Johnson. It's unlikely we'll see him as a CM unless more players get injured.
Stadt Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Milner was quite influential in City's title run in playing as central midfielder, because he's hardworking there seems to be the perception that he's not very good technically which is untrue. Is Barkley an Everton fan? He doesn't seem particularly aggressive but maybe he'd "do" Suarez.
leicsmac Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 If we're going to goad and/or hatchet man Suarez so it becomes 10 v 10, Lampard is the obvious choice. Wouldn't miss him if he were suspended.

He's been taken, like Jones, because he can cover many positions, he was given a game at RB to see how he performed, not to take him to only play RB.
StanSP Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 I'm not saying he'll 'only' play RB, but I'm guessing Hodgson's thinking is that that will be his primary position. Just like Jones/Smalling's primary positions will be CB.

Just like Jones/Smalling's primary positions will be CB. I think if Johnson were injured then we'd play Jones or Smalling at right back. If for any reason we had to convert them to centre back then Milner would move to right back. He's an option, but I wouldn't say he's been taken as a right back. He played there in the friendly to let Jones and Smalling play as centre backs.
RowlattsFox Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 The only reason Milner played right back in the warm up game was to give him some minutes. Pretty certain Smalling would be next choice at right back.
Carl the Llama Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 England in still trying to figure out their line-up during a major tournament shocker... That said we weren't awful vs the Azzuri, certainly a match neither team deserved outright victory if ever there was one... Not that it was any consolation sat in a hotel bar at Charleroi airport full of 'Italians'(a couple of them were wearing Italy shirts but they were speaking French all night and didn't know any Italy chants - I sat cringing through choruses of "allez les bleus" and trying not to get too offended at their glory chasing antics). I expected Uruguay to beat us before the first round of matches, but now we have to be favourites for 2nd surely...
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Milner showed he just simply is not a right back in the friendly, would think he was 4th choice i that position.
Grandad. Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 Johnson won't be dropped. Gerrard won't be dropped. Rooney won't be dropped. Simple really. Expect to see Rooney play behind Sturridge and Sterling on the right and Welbeck on the left.
The Doctor Posted 17 June 2014 Posted 17 June 2014 I'd play: Hart assortment of 4 bozos. Gerrard Henderson Lallana Sterling Ox Sturridge With regards to Rooney - play him down the centre or don't play him. Given the performance he put in vs Italy, Sterling has to start there again, and Sturridge is a better option than Rooney.
theessexfox Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 Looks like Sterling will be shoehorned out wide, for the benefit of Rooney but to the detriment of the team do you think?
foxes_rule1978 Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 Rooney has been doing extra training because he asked to do so, best position for him and I feel we will see the best of him tomorrow
Ric Flair Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 Sterling has played out wide for Liverpool on numerous occasions, but he's been his most dangerous when allowed to roam centrally. A bit like Knockaert for Leicester on a smaller scale, we persist on playing him as a winger when most of his influential play comes from central. I actually think Rooney will score tomorrow and I still think Sterling will cause havoc anywhere across the midfield and attack.
RowlattsFox Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 As long as there is flexibility with positions it will work ok.
indierich06 Posted 18 June 2014 Posted 18 June 2014 There's no reason why Sterling can't cut inside and do his stuff. I think this is the best move for the game, just hoping Rooney can deliver what he's capable of.
