DennisNedry Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Well for me, in my relatively short life watching England, growing up in the Sven era with us reaching the quarter finals a few times, I can safely say that this is the worst England side I've seen. For those older fans, did we ever have a team so lacking in star quality?
Mark_w Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Well as this lot qualified I think it's safe to say that this probably isn't the worst. We were worse in South Africa really.
Aus Fox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 The Taylor era was far worse than this, anyone who remembers Euro 92 and not qualifying for 94 will know this is far from the worst England team ever.
Fox42 Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 This is the best side we've had in the past ten years. Group of death killed us. End of.

AKCJ Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 It makes me wonder why it takes a performance like that to make people realise. We've got players like Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck and Glen Johnson playing. What the **** did you expect?
purpleronnie Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 No doubt they'll be discussions about our grassroot football about the lack of quality coaches, then when we fail again in the next major tournament we'll start those same discussions all over again.
Steven Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Any England side that has Geoff Thomas in it has to be by definition worse.
johnny the fox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 I was shot down when I said this was the worse squad we have sent to a world cup finals..I was not far off..
Guest ttfn Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Yeah, 2008, we weren't even there. That 2008 side lost out in the qualifiers to Russia who lost in the semis and Croatia who also reached the quarters. That was with retrospect a tough group, but given that the 2008 champions league final was Chelsea v man United featuring Ferdinand, Terry, Ashley Cole, Lampard, Carrick, Rooney and Joe Cole it's hard to feel too sorry for us.
Leicesterpool Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 I'd say just as bad as South Africa, the problem with South Africa was we simply took players that were tired and unfit. This time round the players were fit, but lead by a poor manager playing negative tactics. 2008 failing to qualify for the euro's was bad but I felt we had the players but had a poor manager.

Lionator Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 This is the best side we've had in the past ten years. Group of death killed us. End of. Disagree, we should've won the World Cup in 2006 with that squad.
johnny the fox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Knee jerk reaction shocker! something needs jerking son.. im running out of world cups..
BoyJones Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 The two centre backs are not international standard, Baines is also too slow - without decent defenders with a brain, we have no chance. The attack has potential, but will always be undermined by mistakes at the back. In the end, beaten by two poor teams who cared more then we did. Will be surprised if either Italy or Uruquay get past the last 16, which will show our group was not really high quality. However, you have to keep on supporting the lads, even though you know that you are in for years of heartache. At least I had the good fortune to watch them win in 66, don't think my sons or grandsons will get that chance.
Rocket-Ron Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Uruguay as a team were no better than us tonight. Suarez is a million times better than anything we have produced since I dunno perhaps Barnes. And he was Jamaican.

Negative tactics? I personally don't rate Hodgson as a manger that highly but to say he used negative tactics, is quite ludicrous. He played an attacking brand of football, with exciting young players being selected. Hardly negative tactics.
Guest kristianity77 Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Ive been watching England since 86 and whilst I'm not sure this is currently the worst team we have had, its been a consistently below average one now for longer than I care to remember. As others have said, the team of 92-94 was probably worse, since about 2006 we have been in a slow but steady decline which is proven by the fact that we have gone from being a quarter final contender, to a last 16 contender, to a now cant get out of a group stage team. Its the FIFA rankings which always have and still do baffle me. Our hopes are raised every time by the rankings making us look better than we are. We are nowhere near a top 10 team. In real terms id say top 25 at a push and thats reflected by our performances. In fact, I cant even remember, in a competition game or even a friendly when I last walked away thinking England had a played a blinder. Possibly it was the demolition of Croatia when Walcott got his hat trick. When was that, 5 or 6 years ago? Can anyone think of a very decent performance since then?
Donut Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 Graham Taylor couldnt get England out of a group of Holland, Norway (never qualified for a world cup before then), Poland, Turkey (footballing backwater at the time) and San Marino for world cup USA 94, whilst also playing Carlton Palmer in the heart of midfield and Andy bleeding Sinton. Need i say more.
Guest Col city fan Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 We were worse in South Africa I disagree. I think we had a stronger squad of players in S Africa. We just played abysmally. This squad IMO is rank. Gerrard and Henderson as the midfield pairing with Jagielka and Cahill behind! Rubbish.
ousefox Posted 19 June 2014 Posted 19 June 2014 We're missing a Suarez, Van Persie, Messi, Ronaldo, etc. Not one world class player. All good players but nobody who can make the difference and do something special. We had that in 98, 02 and 06 but couldn't do anything even then. We won't have a team that can compete at a tournament for at least ten years now. Our team for the Euros is going to look depressing.
