Aside from being positionally woeful, Simpson seems scared on the ball. His passing stats may look artificially high because he always goes for the easiest pass. Against Spurs he kept putting Hamer under pressure.

De Laet - easy decision.

I'd keep both in the side with DeLaet playing in front of Simpson. That way we have two for the price of one so to speak. DeLaet will trouble the opposition going forward alowing Mahrez to go inside while he goes down the wing. When were defending he can offer Simpson cover like Schlupp does with Konchesky.

Simpson for me comfortably. He's a better defender and maybe going forward too. Neither are brilliant but De Laet has been positionally woeful.

Also, I think it's a bit harsh to blame Simpson for the Kane goal. He was supporting Mahrez on the right flank as he should be, we lost the ball and a couple of seconds later the ball was being played into the channel. He can't support his right winger and stay in a perfect defensive position at the same time.

Simpson 100%

I like defenders that can defend first and formost

This exactly people forget that a full backs first job is still defending

Simpson all day long IMO. Simpson's strength as a full back is his defensive capabilities which allows Mahrez to express himself more as he knows he has a player behind him who wants to defend and is accomplished in that part of the game. It's no coincidence for me that Mahrez has started to become more of a threat since Danny has been in the team.

De Laet is the better full back at going forward but that is not what you need in a team that is grafting at the bottom of the table. Simpson keeps his place for me.

Anyone see Simpson almost assist Livermore a goal today?

Shocking header.....Poor positioning costing us 2 versus spurs as well as leaving nasri free against man city...but hey, he's better than de laet right?

De Laet makes loads of mistakes. I'd say he's the most mistake-prone player in the team. Lets not pretend it's only Simpson who messes up occasionally.

Half of the time Was is doing what Simpson should be doing on that side but we're having less of an issue now so leave it

it was 80% of the time with RDL there to be fair

I'd prefer Simpson generally but I'd put in De Laet for Liverpool. He made Sterling look like a fool for most of the game.

well Sterling will be playing as the striker not a winger so it'll be Wes/Was that deal with him

Our current style of play suits Simpson and he hasn't really cost us which is why Pearson is sticking with him. Its clear to see that Pearson is keen on defensive responsibility first this season which is why our L/R backs aren't overlapping or getting forward like last season. This is where De Laet comes into his element. Your taking away his game and an attacking full back/wing back is the modern way football is played. If its purely down to footballing ability for me, De Laet wins this easily. He can defend, look how he handled De Maria after the first 2 goals and Sterling against Liverpool. I even think when on his game De Laet is more agressive in the tackle and his pace is vital. I've always thought Simpson is distinctly average and what you've seen from him already is all were going to get. You won't be wow'd by any of his performances whereas De Laet has the occasional wow factor if allowed to play to his strengths.

Most will say Simpson as he hasn't really made a mistake yet. As soon as he makes 1 or 2 mistakes it'll be "get de laet back in" personally neither are PL quality. Would much rather naughton, as good as Simpson defensively with the attacking threat and speed of de laet

I think its no coincidence that Mahrez is flourishing with a solid defender behind him someone who doesnt get forward much and lets Mahrez do his thing and provides cover

Another example of how some people on here blindly stick to their biases and predispositions regardless of evidence. Simpson can do no wrong now even though he is making the same number of mistakes as De Laet, if not more. Criminal attempt at a clearance against Hull that we were lucky not to concede from. Same with Kasper and Hamer - Hamer has hardly been the revelation that some insisted he would be but those who demanded his introduction can only view the situation through the lense of their own off-the-mark predictions. The amount of intellectual dishonesty and confirmation bias on here is painful and embarrassing.

Considering we have criticized De laet for his poor positioning at times.

Why has more not been made of Simpson's poor positioning for both spurs goals?

For the first he completely left Chadli, and for the second the foul came about because he was out of position.

For the first he came across because of the ridiculous amount of space Wes and Was had left Kane in. Right decision in my opinion Kane was in a more dangerous position and if he hadn't tried to close that space it would have been an easy through ball for Kane. He left Chadli as the easier pass and that gave Morgan enough time to get back and he should have cut out the ball to Kane.

As for De Laet or Simpson it really depends on what formation and personnel we have. If the right wing has license to go forward then I would prefer Simpson, if the right wing or right midfield will cover the right back position then I would have RDL in.
