Leicester to bid £8m for Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki

Robin,

Having seen a lot of him at international level when Japan plays Australia, and that is a lot, he is a shinning light of their team.  He is a very difficult striker to defend and works much like Vardy.  He is bigger than Vardy also.  So Would be a good addition to the strike force.  Ulloa, Okazaki, Vardy, Nugent and Krameric and Wood is a more than adequate attacking group.  He plays physical and is strong and would be more than up for the PL.

I say to those thinking 1, he is to old and 2, that it is not good value, just think back to how the club got slated for paying a club record 8 mil for Ulloa, a mere Championship 28 year old striker!!  That investment hasn't turned out to bad, or how about a mil for a non league 26 year old striker, who has now has played for England and is worth 15 mil.

I think our management have a pretty good track record on these things.

Has Okazaki played exclusively as a striker for Japan? Any significant time on the wing or CM/CAM?

I'm by no means a BILD fan (because it's one of the worst tabloids in Germany), but there's some truth in the criticism of Okazaki's asking price. 10 million Euro is a lot of money for a 29-year old striker out of contract in twelve month's time - given the fact that Mainz once bought him for less than two million not so long ago. I wouldn't want to object to his knack for scoring goals, but I still believe we'd be paying over the odds here.

Its what we have to pay though isn't it? We bid more than that for him 6 months ago...

at the end of the day, think what we may (starting to sound poetic) a lot of work goes into identifying, scouting and setting about plans to bring in new players.

We have a strategy that has been very successful in recent years and every attempt appears to be made to try to 'get it right' - i.e get the right quality of players to achieve the right aims at the right times at the right affordable price with the right skillset and right attitude. Who are we to speculate on whether it is a right?

We will all find out in due course but it's kinda nice to see us bringing in unknown quantities and see them flourish whilst other teams go for the known names at inflated prices and often see them fall flat on their arses.

Some won't pay off but at least there seems to be the right procedures in place to get the right players and minimise risk of landing a dud!

Almost exclusively a Striker.  Sometimes in his early career did get pushed to the wing.  For Japan he has always been seen as a striker.

Feel sorry for NP, he is trying to improve the team with another proven striker and fans are moaning about the guys advanced age, He is still in his 20's for heavens sake. If he has three years left at the top and can knock in say 40 goals in this period, keeping up in the division, it will money well spent.

I know the forum is about differing opinions, but the number of negative posters over a variety of topics is surprising IMO. The feelgood factor didn't last long with some people.

29 years old is what I'd consider in his prime. Okazaki will be a quality signing, if we keep up signing players of this calibre we can kiss goodbye anything lower then 12th next season.

Reports on his style of play all seem to suggest he's another Vardy - why wouldn't we want another one? I don't care if he's 19 or 29, if he adds some quality to our team and the club feel they have agreed a fair price for him then I'm prepared to trust that judgement and support the decision. Pearson would never sign a player for such a large fee, at Okazaki's age, based purely on their ethnicity if they weren't good enough to play for us.

We'll get that back in merchandise in Japan in about a week. Part of the deal buying Japanese players and he's a Japanese star! He'll pay for himself.

Irrelevant. We will recover that over the period of his contract with sponsorship deals with Japan and possibly other East and South East Asian companies.  :D

Very snarky tone in that Bild article about the price.

Mind you I'm sure they were saying the same (or worse) about Firmino's fee.

£7.1m for a striker in the premier league is nothing. If he's in good physical shape and doesn't rely too much on pace then he can be in his prime for three more seasons. If he's a classy player then he can still make an impact into his mid-30s. It's potentially a bargain, and I don't really see it as much of a risk, like I said the fee, minus whatever Asian revenue the transfer generates, is loose change in premier league terms.

Latest news: Mainz's director of football, Christian Heidel, denies the club have already made their mind up about selling Okazaki at the price Leicester are willing to pay.

lcfc fans acting like there paying for him out there own wages , just trust NP he's rarely ****ed up on transfers

No they aren't though are they, expressing you think it's a lot of money for someone that age, of that background is nothing of the sort. You can also still have faith in Pearson and his team whilst expressing concerns. They know the player more than anyone and I'm happy to go along with their judgement over mine or anyone elses on here. But it doesn't stop me from thinking that's a shit load of money for someone that age.

The way people are acting you'd think the player had been rubbished by half the people on here. There have been some concerns expressed, most of them nothing to do with his actual ability as a player. That's it. It's a forum to express those opinions, nobody is going ridiculously over the top in any critisism.

Well if he was 28 a player like okazaki would cost in the region of £15mill + so getting him a year older with still maybe 3 years for half the price is good business , provided he turns good for us , however we won't know if he's worth 7.3mill or not till the season starts

Just heard at school today he could be joining you lot. So got on here to see what people are thinking....

Okazaki is hugely popular here in Japan, if he signs, every Leicester game will be shown live. And I don't think there will be a problem selling his shirts. Funnily enough I sit next to his old junior high school teacher, and Okazaki has been back to visit the school a few times, a really good bloke, a bit rough around the edges as far as the Japanese go but a gent none the less.

He's a work horse. Will run his guts out and hound anyone near him for 90 minutes. He has been a striker most of his life, for Japan he starts up front but drops back and to the left if another front man is brought on. Although he isn't top notch technique wise, he more than makes up for it in graft, and he has no problems throwing his melon at the ball.

I don't think age will play a major part as his body is his temple and the Japanese live longer than anyone else on the planet, he'll be good to go for a few years yet I reckon.

I'm bloody stoked he could be in the prem, one of my favorite Japanese players and I'm looking forward to seeing how he goes.

Good luck this season, sorry and I hope I'm not slated but I'm a Chelsea fan....... Zola was my favorite player when I was growing up in NZ and I've stuck with them since. I hope you guys sign him!

Wish we could sign Zola too mate.

Cheers for that, I personally would welcome Shinji with open arms.

It's worrying that people actually believe that.

That's just class - a Kiwi Chelsea fan working/living in Japan with Okazaki as his favourite player, posting on a Leicester City forum. Can hardly beat that. :D

Hope you stick around for a while - we could do with a Nihon office, all news from the Far East concerned.

I'm not claiming to be in the know at all, but my mates dad works for city and we were chatting about this transfer last night, as far as he's concerned it's a done deal, just got to tie up a few loose ends and he's expected to be announced within the next few days
