Leicester to bid £8m for Mainz forward Shinji Okazaki

Uh, actually, that's not far off.

If you go to a sports shop in Japan, it's easier to find a shirt for a European club that a Japanese player plays for than a local team.

I wanted an Avispa Fukuoka shirt and the locals thought this was both weird and hilarious. They're big in to football but not many follow their local teams, they're mostly interested in Japanese players abroad.

Kagawa Dortmund shirts, Honda Milan shirts, etc everywhere. I'll be surprised if I can't find an Okazaki Leicester shirt when I go even though a lot of the people I met had never heard of Leicester last time I went (or even Wales) and I gave up and told everyone I was from London.

Those that did know Wales usually said either Ryan Giggs or Gareth Bale. Global football is a massive market there.

I do, however, doubt this "Asian pride" theory that loads of Thai, Malay, Chinese, Korean etc fans are going to go nuts for Leicester because we sign an Asian player. Especially given half the continent hates Japan!

I find that bit bizarre. Its like everyone in England going wild for FC Goa because Robert Pires signed for them  :nigel:

is that the same as penalties and cup games? - ****s sake!

He makes a valid point. He's scored some goals against the likes of Chile, Belgium, Argentina and Italy, but the bulk of his goals have come against the likes of Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, Togo etc.

Does make me wonder what shirt sales were like for Beckham & LA Galaxy.

That's the case for most international goal tallies though surely? Wayne Rooney has padded his figures goals against San Marino, Andorra and the likes.

More impressed with his work for an unfashionable German team in a strong league.

In the sense that it doesn't reflect their ability from open play in a similar standard of league... then yes it is like them.

According to latest reports, Okazaki is very close to signing for us or already has signed a contract. Mainz are allegedly looking for replacements as we speak.

True, but I think the average ranking of the teams Rooney has scored against will be much higher than Okazaki's as it's European teams. You can only score against what's in front of you though, and I guess he's now at the peak of his career.

Agreed, and I imagine he'll find it much easier to adapt than Kramaric given the nature of his game and the league he's come from. He should slot straight in.

I think we both know you can twist stats to back up your opinions either way, that's kind of what I was getting at!

I will not be passing judgement on someone I know the square root of fcuk all about though, not this time anyway

Should strike up a nice counter balance with Riyad on the other side then

Enough about goal scoring records... Beckford to Leicester, Torres to Chelsea, Balotelli to Liverpool, and Falcao to Man United are just a few of many examples that show one cannot simply extrapolate future goal scoring rates from scoring records in the past for other teams.

What's more important is the attributes a player possesses, how those attributes fit into a position in the team's strategy and tactics, and whether or not this will help our team win. Pearson likes his forwards to really put in a good shift (Vardy's a perfect example, and he didn't bang in the goals in the PL like he has in the past, but nobody here can be disappointed with his contributions to the team). Without having the luxury of watching Okazaki week in and week out, it still does seem from what I gather that he can do a lot of the other "dirty work" required of a Leicester City forward.

The way our club handles transfer business relative to our overall strategy, the staff will be more concerned about whether or not Okazaki's addition will improve the overall team goal difference (or since the team hasn't started the season, the quality of our team's expected chances and our expected goal difference), and if such an improvement warrants the transfer fee. Advanced stats FTW. The owners will worry about the business and marketing aspects of the move.

There are enough stats about his two good seasons in the Bundesliga to go off, I'm not sure our scouts would have paid too much attention to the huge amount of goals he got against substandard international teams.

A few things set the alarm bells ringing for me, but I trust the scouts more than I trust me... so I'm sure he'll be fine. :)

No problem with us signing him at all. We've obviously had an eye on him for some time

With James out and Cambiasso not committed I'd just be happier if one of these midfielders we are bieng linked with actually signed.

He is scoring a goal every 2 games for Japan, and since he has played in Germany he has averaged a goal every 3.5 games.

Its a big difference that's just international football, Its the same with Rooney and England compared to his Prem Goals

According to ssn

MAINZ COOL OKAZAKI RUMOURS

Mainz have rejected reports Leicester have agreed a £7.1m deal for striker Shinji Okazaki.

Bild is claiming the Japanese forward is preparing to undergo a medical, but Mainz general manager Christian Heidel told the German paper otherwise.

"There is no transfer contract agreed in terms of Shinji Okazaki. I am not out to make any further statement at this point in time.”

I'll be a little bit underwhelmed if we sign him.

I don't know enough about him to have an informed opinion but he doesn't appear any better than what we have and at 29 little room for improvement.

Also five strikers of this quality at the club seems excessive so I wonder if we're lined up to sell one of them if we complete this transfer?

I'd much rather us get a couple of great centre mids in which is the area we are really lacking quality in.

A guy that has hit double figures in consecutive seasons in one of Europe's best leagues and has over 40 international goals appears no better to you than David Nugent and Chris Wood?

How do you know they won't?

What about TV appearance money? Someone who lives in Japan has told us we'll be on TV every week if we sign him.

Why don't you just admit you don't have a clue what you're talking about?

Because the likes of Real Madrid don't even make 8m profit on merchandise in Asia in "about a week".

Stop talking out of your arse and look at facts.

A quick Google search found this.

When Beckham was at Madrid (an absolute icon in Asia) they managed to make £190m quid in a year and only 8% of that was from sales in Asia. Granted times have changed but that's about 300 grand a week.

But yeah I don't have a clue do I?
