Police catch drivers parking on roundabout by school

Police have said parents who parked on a roundabout outside a primary school after dropping off their children are "mad".

Officers caught three vehicles on camera outside Meadowdale School in Little Bowden, near Market Harborough yesterday morning.

There has been continual problems with parking since the popular school opened its doors more than a decade ago.

Police were on patrol to monitor traffic congestion as children arrived for lessons.

They pictured the offending vehicles and put them on Twitter.

Harborough Police tweeted: "More mad parking on the roundabout @meadowdalemh this morning. No lines or signs needed. You cannot park on it #6642."

Meadowdale was rated good by Ofsted inspectors who visited the school in October last year.

It is very popular having around 400 pupils, which means the capacity has doubled since it was opened.

The illegal parking at the school has also been condemned County councillor for the area Sarah Hill.

Coun Hill said: "I have the seen the picture and it is truly disturbing.

"It is true that there has been a congestion issue since the school opened because it so popular.

"There are, however, similar issues at other schools across Market Harborough."

She added: "The parents responsible for parking on the roundabout should consider the road safety risks they pose to their own children and other pupils at the school."

Dr Hill said: "To avoid this happening again I would urge parents to leave home earlier, park further away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

"It will be healthier for their children and safer."

The school issued the following statement: "Meadowdale Primary School is committed to working with parents and the local community to address issues relating to parking beyond the school boundary.

"In recent years the school has worked with local residents, parents, highways and the police on this issue.

"We have tried a Star Walker scheme and a Walking Bus scheme and invested thousands of pounds in cycle and scooter storage to encourage children to come to school using alternative means of travel.

"In response to recent concerns, we are in the process of establishing a working party to look again at parking."

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: "Two parking tickets were issued by a PCSO as part of an operation at schools across Market Harborough."

She said the third motorist drove off before a ticket could be issued.

Two tickets were also issued outside the school on Monday.

They could put police outside every school in Leicester and encounter the exact same problem with people parking in stupid (or) illegal places.

Fine the lot of them and stop this nonsense. All it would take is one officer doing rounds of the local schools at drop off times, then we'll see how long this bollocks lasts.

Living near two schools, this shit drives me nuts. They park on blind corners, opposite junctions, on the end of junctions, and even once on my drive. Majorly fed up of this thoughtless shit.

I live down the road from a school and stupid shit like this happens everyday. Most of these people live within walking distance of the place aswell. Well and truly makes my piss fizz.

You do have to think that when this school was built, not that long ago, they could have foreseen this problem. It is hardly a new phenomenon.

A permanent carpark would be excessive for this amount of cars, but It wouldn't be too difficult to have a drop off/pick up area that can double as a play area for lunch time.

My parents live within 100 yards of a primary school on a cul de sac.  If I want to go & visit them I have to consider what time it is.  If it's school knocking off time......forget it.

My Dad says it's a miracle that a school kid hasn't been knocked over or killed.  People park anywhere they like, on grass verges, on corners, in front of people's drives.  People have even used his drive to park on regular occasions.  If he comes home & finds a car on his drive (which can take 2 cars), he parks behind it & goes into the house & waits for the parent to come knocking so that they can get their car off.  He makes them wait, sometimes up to half hour.  The parent will have the nerve to give him a mouthful.  Luckily for him, he enjoys a good argument.

Kids open their doors on the road side & jump out without looking, when there are cars flying about everywhere & everyone seems to be in a mad rush to get to work (or get back home for Jeremy Kyle).  There have been traffic wardens & when someone points out a car illegally parked they just shrug their shoulders & carry on walking.  It's as if they've been told to turn a blind eye at school knocking off times.

The street have collectively contacted the police, the council & the school to see what can be done about it.  They have made suggestions, e.g. car sharing, but all they do is note their comments & nothing ever changes.

The chap who lives in the first house on the close, on the corner, received a letter from the council saying that he must keep his hedges trimmed & below a certain height because they could obstruct the view of cars entering/exiting the street.  The piss taking twats.

Why do kids need to be driven to school anyway?  I'm sure a good proportion of them live within walking distance.  I'll sound like an old fart now, but as soon as could find my way to school I was left to it.  I was probably about 7 years old & it was about a 15 minute walk..........uphill in both directions.

I once seen a lady park in the middle of the road in blaby, blocking both sides for five minutes. She had all her makeup and lipstick on but couldn't obviously get to school any sooner.

If only there was this much common sense, in reality car infrastructure around new buildings is often intentionally reduced to try and promote people using public transport. Same reason why every single city in the UK is gridlocked at least twice per day. Environmental nuts still getting their way even though cars are now relatively clean.

That school was built primarily to serve the new estate built next door to it. I doubt there's anywhere in its catchment area not within walking distance. Lazy parents are such twats, they really are.

This time of year there is always loadsof cars parked half on the pavement  along Swain Street Bridge/Sparkenoe  Street/Conduit Street opposite and outside  the school. Anyone know why and whether it is legal as  there are double yellow lines up to Swain Street  Bridge. There is a car park as well nearby.  I struggle to get by some cars that are parked on the pavement.

Well if you have an insanely large roundabout why not?

Because its illegal and helps to block the roundabout?

2 faced wankers, what about that cop car that's always parked half on the pavement on filbert street on match days.

I know right... All those schools that it blocks...

Even the ones who hold down a job by getting there at 9am, and couldn't if they had a 10 min walk back from school every morning?

Well it doesn't block the roundabout if the roundabout looks like that does it?  Still not very clever, and I wouldn't do it myself.

If they worked in Harborough town centre that wouldn't be an issue.

My Mrs works in a massive new building, out of town, housing a number of related public sector departments. Hundreds of people work there, it is a modern, shiny, state of the art glass and concrete megastructure.

They deliberately catered for only 60% of the employees parking there, to hit environmental targets.

Every morning, from about 6.30 am, all the surrounding roads are choked with parked cars. All the grass verges are churned to shit. Roads not meant for mass parking get parked on, en masse. The residents of the nearby village complain constantly.

As if everyone was going to get the hourly bus or half hourly train which stop a 10 minute walk away...

The powers that be have utterly failed to nudge people into changing their behaviours.

Tree hugging cyclist twots.

Got a primary school about 20 metres from my house. Come home early one day and found some bleeder parked on my drive. Their reasoning "I've been doing it for weeks and nobody complained"... Oh that's ok then!!!
