jimmeh Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Video? Image of the front page, anyone? The link to the video is the first very post You undervalue his worth to us. If I were the chairman, though, I'd take steps to educate the players away from extreme gambling. It's a cancer that has, and can, wreck so many sportsman's lives. Definitely. I know myself. I have lost thousands over the years. Dread to think what vardy lost on that one night. Judging by the video, a lot.
jimmer Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Can see the club going after the Sun for this. Such a scummy paper on par with the mirror.....**** off and die!
Footnote75 Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Interestingly the founder of the Leicestershire Japan society (the only one quoted who is Japanese) seems the least offended and has a sensible take on it. “Some people say it carelessly without realising the full meaning. As a footballer and role model, he needs to be aware that he is going to be scrutinised and needs to be more careful than the rest.” Yes, I also picked up on that. I've found some of the words cropping up during this thread offensive to me personally, but I'm also a linguist and aware of how the meanings of certain terms can change over time and between geographical areas (as, indeed, many others would be!) - for me it's ultimately the intent that's important and whether you go on using a term when it has clearly already offended. I wonder whether The Sun was just waiting on this until Vardy scored his first goal - whether that be the first day of the season, next week, next year. Whatever the case, this isn't 'journalism' or 'in the public interest' or produced with any integrity whatsoever. The screenshot of its own use of the word is gold!
LcFc_Smiv Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 That witnesses statement doesnt seem very original at all!
dbtcity Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/107867/Japs-in-jungle-for-60-yrs.html They clearly don't find the term Jap to be 'racist' or 'vile'
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 I hope this is a case of someone saying something without really believing the baggage that goes with it. You know, wants to get at the guy and just says the first thing that pops into his head. Does feel like I'm making excuses for him though. I'm not interested in the Sun's hypocrisy on the use of the word either. It's not relevant.
FLAN Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Not comparing here but in terms of football morals I am surprised watching the highlights that Johnson is the captain of Sunderland considering his grooming accusation!! I didn't really notice at the game
Unabomber Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Heard about this this other week my mate was playing there too. It's a shame, he really needs to act in a more professional manner.
Haydos Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Amount of ignorant ***** on here is ridiculous. Black isn't racist but are you claiming that if someone shouted "**** off, black" to a black guy they weren't being racist? I called someone out on here yesterday for referring to Okazaki as "the Jap". Some of you are stuck in the 60's.
Sly Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 I'm surprised football fans haven't come together to organize a mass boycott of this waste of trees. Do they sell anything in Liverpool these days!? I love the website screen shoot , just shows how hypocritical they are. On the term itself, is it any different from Yanks, Brits, Ozzie's, etc etc?? I'd be more concerned with when this was filmed in relation to season preparation. Footballers gamble, it's part of life though, when you earn so much money, you have the liberty to burn it if you choose. Not every footballer is as shrewd as Robbie Fowler.
Sly Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Oh, I don't condone racism by the way. It's not a term I'd use just to clarify that!
Finnaldo Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 'Jap'? Seriously? I mean, of all terms to use, I can't think of many less racist terms other than Japanese or East-Asian. 'Slit-eye' is a totally inappropriate term to use, that's obvious, but to call a guy 'Jap' in a casino? It's seems like a grey area to me, could probably do with a discipline of somekind but this is far from a racist orgy tape to be honest.
Richmondfox Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 I'm a trained sound engineer and work in broadcasting so i'll use my experience on this. The sound levels are really low, they have had to increase the gain so much that the noise level is on par with the audio, this doesn't make it clear at all. The first time I listened without looking at the subtitles it sounds like Jack, the last part of the word was sharper, not associated to how you would say Jap Second time with subtitles I think it sounds like 'Jap' as that's what i'm being told he saying but the P still being pronounced. They are heavily influencing this and i'm sure Vardy's legal team will use that against the sun. I guess we'll have to see how many other papers run with this with such flimsy evidence. But then I have just finished a 12 hr night shift so I could be wrong. Also my initials are JAP he could have been calling me.
KFS Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Having now watched the video, I think this might become a problem. The Sun do love it don't they. Used their 'article' to bring up the Thai incident and Jamie's tag 5 years ago. Also, why is his Mrs using quotes from English literature to attempt to defend him? Stupid. Vardy, girlfriend and press- all of you have a word.
LCFC FOX Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Not racist at all He better not get sacked even if it was stupid acting in that way
justfoxes Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 big fine coming from this !! Vardy needs to keep his cool as he must remember every journalist and snapper will be watching for awful behaviour !!
EastAnglianFox Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 Wouldn't surprise me If nugents Mrs had anything to do with this More like Vardy's, she looks and sounds a vile piece if work, wouldn't surprise me if it was her egging him on to do more about it.
Haydos Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 'Jap'? You're one of many missing the point. He's allegedly used an iffy term and a person's race to insult them. It's more the intent and the fact that he's mentioning their race. I don't know why people find this so hard to grasp. Jamie Vardy is a dirty, cheat. Wes Morgan is a dirty, black cheat. Shinji Okazaki is a dirty, Jap cheat. All fine according to a lot of people on here. The mind boggles.
Bagworthblue Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 should we not be called 'Brits' then as the Sun always refers to us as Brits? Don't get me wrong - I get it and used with aggression he would have been much better using the word 'mate' or 'pal' or similar and I personally would never refer to someone in such a scenario by picking out their nationality.the word 'Jap However to refer to someone in a descriptive manner as a 'Brit' an aussie, a yank is generally not deemed offensive by the recipients yet the word 'Jap' is? irrelevant, in this scenario it was wrong whether it was meant racially or simply offensively. nb when i lived and played footy in france - they called me L'etranger or L'anglais and it never bothered me even when it was aggressive but I still maintain it was wrongly used in this scenario
jimmeh Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 More like Vardy's, she looks and sounds a vile piece if work, wouldn't surprise me if it was her egging him on to do more about it. I meant nugents Mrs could have gone to the sun about it. Unlikely I know. But she is majorly pissed off about nugent not being wanted. What better way to get one back on the club?
funkyrobot Posted 9 August 2015 Posted 9 August 2015 The sun continually use the phrase jap in their headlines. We need to boycott this awful paper despite the interesting new stories they have on page 3 (.)(.)
