Harry - LCFC Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 I think we have a moral responsibility to offer sanctuary to these people, especially since it's a problem that's fairly easy to end help to relative to the amount of good that can be done. In my opinion we don't have any obligation to offer them welfare or financial assistance - allow private charities do that if they wish - living in a country at peace is what the refugees have fled for and that's all we're obliged to offer. I must say I don't like the idea of 'Refugees Welcome' banners appearing at matches. By it's very nature politics is divisive, as such I think it's better for the game if political statements remains outside. If you want to voice your opinions please do so in your own time with other people who have agreed to accompany you. Don't use the club as a vehicle to promote views that others might not be wholeheartedly behind. As sad as it is seeing the picture of that baby I think we need to get our own house in order before dealing with others too. This comment always gets made in humanitarian cases like this. The trouble is that you could always find some way in which more could be done for people here at home so anyone could just repeat it for any situation regardless of how healthy the country might be. I dunno, it seems like a bit of an easy way out to me.
J.Lisemore Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 USA has taken in something like 120 thousand refugees in the last year. We have taken in something like 30 thousand. We should be doing more for genuine refugees Difference being, we are minuscule compared to the USA.
Merging Cultures Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Cameron has been reading FT. The UK is to provide resettlement to "thousands" more Syrian refugees in response to the worsening humanitarian crisis, David Cameron has announced. He said the extra refugees would come from UN camps bordering Syria, and not from among people already in Europe. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-34148913
ramboacdc Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 people are looking at the problem the wrong way. the Syrian war has been going on for years now. Why are the refugees now fleeing in droves? why were they not before? what is now happening in Syria to make them flee? end of the day we cannot see these people as immigrants who are coming for benefits etc like the papers were portraying them until a 3 year old washed up on the beach. have an emergency summit, get all the european countries together who can take refugees and then get numbers. spread them out and get them to apply for asylum or refuge. Doesn't matter where they are from in my eyes, they are all from earth and we should look after our fellow man.
Guest Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Chronic ignorance, I suggest. Many in Kobane ( where those poor kids on the beach were from) are fighting: The title of this thread is so wrong. REFUGEES not migrants! #RefugeesWelcome I'm allowed to disagree I presume. Many refugees then become migrants. Those pressing to come to England, Germany, Sweden are Migrants. Refugees stop at the first safe country hoping to return home later.

It undermines the people traffickers and stops the illegal economic migrants who just want to jump the queue.
johnny the fox Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 cameron making policy on the hoof...funny what one photo can do, 71 died in back of van, no photo...nothing happens, one boy washed up on a beach and is photographed.. europe's whole policy changes.... great strategy...

I agree, I would have preferred Cameron to do more for the camps and make them more habitable!!
DennisNedry Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 The argument that annoys me is 'we caused the problems in Syria so have a responsibility to help'. Well, no. The politicans did it without public support. We as British taxpayers didn't cause it at all. Most people were against the thought of interfering in the east anyway. It's ordinary people in this country who are going to suffer from letting these migrants in. More tax burden, less housing, more petty crime in their neighbourhoods, more strain on public services etc. Meanwhile the politicians in their rural mansions are completely unaffected by it all. Shelter them all in the House of Commons/Lords and give them MPs expenses.
johnny the fox Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 I agree, I would have preferred Cameron to do more for the camps and make them more habitable!! in the short term yes..but until the underlying issues in iraq, libya, and syria etc are tackled in a proper way this policy is doomed to fail...russia are still sending arms to assad.. helping to prop up his failing regime. now when the fooking yanks are needed they nowhere. if only tony blair had of carried on as the mid east envoy.
Guest Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 1 refugee into the home of each person believing England should take them. It'll help with integration!
Webbo Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Most stupidist thing i've read today!! It's only just gone 12, give him time, he'll surpass himself.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 I work with a couple of Libyans who returned home during Ramadan, they have told me their country is fine and not to believe what the media are saying about Libya.
lestajigs Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Why are these men, not fighting for what they believe or there country,
johnny the fox Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 merkel is culpable in this fiasco inviting people to come to germany..its like a bank manager opening the doors and shouting ..free money!
Rincewind Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Why is it stupid? War makes refugees of people. It does not say which politicians. It is just another way of looking at the situation. I think point that is being made is that people moan about the number of immigrants coming here yet quite a few are coming from war zones that are either in conflict against the west (Iraq comes to mind) or the county's military are being sold weapons by weapon manufacturers of the western civilised world. Politicians have the power to change policies that prevent this and we as the voting public have the power to vote in the politicians that will promise to do this. If you feel this is stupid then so be it. I will not attempt to change your mind. But don't call me stupid for doing what others are doing, in looking for alternatives. The topic title is Migrants what's the answer?. Not if your view is different to mine then you are an idiot.
Freesolo Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 With the reality that all countries in Europe are going to have to pitch in and help these refuges what exactly is the Arab League of Nations doing to help? Most of these refuges speak Arabic and a huge percentage are Muslim, would it not make sense that countries like Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE who are wealthy beyond belief would do something to help their Muslim brothers and sisters?
Babylon Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Thought this was an excellent piece on it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/immigration/11842760/Prepare-yourselves-The-Great-Migration-will-be-with-us-for-decades.html
Voll Blau Posted 4 September 2015 Posted 4 September 2015 Why are these men, not fighting for what they believe or there country, Maybe because hey'd rather get their families to safety?
